After I got home from my run and was about to fix my breakfast, my daughter called. She and her husband were stranded on their bikes because his derailleur broke in two. Terrific. They were 25 miles into about a 40 mile ride. I hopped in my truck to rescue them- they were not in my neighborhood, to say the least. I picked them up (and the bikes) and drove them home. The whole thing took quite awhile. I had the good sense to grab some sliced turkey lunchmeat and cheese on my way out the door, since I needed something after the run.
I’ve been using the Garmin cycling computers/GPS units for more than a decade with no issues. But they are larger packages than the wrist units and maybe the more technology gets crammed into smaller spaces, the more likelihood of programming/hardware issues? My current Edge 820 is 2-3x the size of the wrist units and a lot of the sports technology in them is the same with each also featuring functions the other does not. At some point are the smaller wrist units just over-developed with features that results in tech packaging problems and reliability issues? Don’t know, but it’s a legit question, I think, not unique to Garmin.
Hi from Vienna! Well, I got my cardio in today … We flew to LHR and then LHR-VIE. There was a huge crowd of people when we arrived in LHR and both H and I stupidly missed that we could just go on to our connecting flight, and somehow we got into the passport control line (as if we were leaving the airport). We waited in line 40 mins, thinking … I can’t believe we got booked this tight, we are going to miss our flight. We finally asked someone and they said - you’re in the wrong line, you just have to go this way and get on your flight. Ok. So we ran to security. We now have 20 mins before the flight takes off. H goes through security; they stop me; I said go on without me, just get to the gate. Well, they sent my carry-on through security THREE TIMES. They opened everything, even a bottle of Tylenol. They took each phone/iPad charger (I was carrying all 4) and ran them through separately. I had a little box of 100-calorie nut packs and a little box of protein bars that were unopened and they opened the boxes and rifled through. There was nothing in my bag that was prohibited or problematic and the guy was slower than molasses. Now it’s 10 min to take off and I’m positive the door is closed. I was wearing flip flops and I took them off and just ran barefoot full OJ-style, full out to my gate. H saw me and yelled to the gate attendant “I told you she was coming!” because they were at the Sorry-sir-we-have-to-close-the-door stage! I was dripping sweat and could barely speak! Got on board and was fine once I got some water but it was definitely at that lactic acid stage where it feels like you’re breathing milk …
Later, I synched my Fitbit and you could see 5 min worth of full out running and heartbeat to match! I ran so hard (for me; I’m sure it would have been nothing for many of you) that I almost felt that I had exercise-induced asthma as I coughed for a while afterwards (I’ve never had that, this was a first). But it was so totally avoidable - if we’d done what we were supposed to do we would have had a leisurely walk to our next gate and no stress whatsoever! But all is well that ends well …
Way to go, Pizzagirl! This is the reason I avoid LHR… After being there a few times and after a friend had told me how her Tampax was taken apart at one security checkpoint.
Oh my God, Pizzagirl, I’m alternately laughing and feeling sorry for you. How awful, like something that would happen in a nightmare…thank God you are in shape and can run like that!!
I had a similar nightmare story, though it was in Paris. We missed our exit and ended up getting to the airport much later than desired (with my elderly in laws, a 4 year old and a 7 year old). There was an unattended suitcase, which caused a major panic, with the French closing off part of the airport, and young men with automatic weapons pointed at us, yelling in French. They wouldn’t let my husband cross over the road to us (he had dropped off the rental). Twenty minutes to push, we had to get to the gate and he couldn’t cross over. If we missed the flight, we missed the first part of our cruise. Carrying the baby, dragging my other son, trying to coerce the in laws to move faster than a slow walk (wondering, could they move fast if their house was on fire?). Husband ran all the way around the other side of the airport, and we all made it on board as they were closing up. Sweating, stressed out…never going to be late again, especially in Europe!!
I hope you and your husband got yourself a nice glass of wine (okay, make it two) onboard, to relieve the stress!!
“This is the reason I avoid LHR… After being there a few times and after a friend had told me how her Tampax was taken apart at one security checkpoint.”
Okay, there seems to be a trend with the Europeans, as far as security goes. One time I had a curling iron with me. The guard pulled it out of the bag, and said loudly, “What is this, what is this?” I know he thought it was a vibrator and was trying to embarrass me…so I loudly explained how you used it to curl your hair. Another time they confiscated my flashlight, “It could be used as a weapon”! But…I’m a crewmember, it’s a required item, here’s my identification, everyone has one. “No, it must go!” It’s useless arguing with European security.
Went rock climbing today, weight lifting. Wanted to go running again, but I am still aggravated by blisters. I gotta do a better job of wearing these orthotics that supposedly are supposed to prevent them. Ran four miles yesterday without too much pain, but I need to be able to do better than that. Thinking about signing up for a 5K in October or November, though it’s hard to train for that when I can’t seem to run very far without pain. And running surely seems like the best possible exercise.
There is also a thing called Body Glide used by triathletes. You will get fewer blisters when the weather is cooler.
Also, socks make a huge difference. They do. Never run in cotton blends! I turn my socks inside out and trim all micro fibers and threads that stick out. Those little buggers cause a lot of trouble over long distances! I also like Injinji socks. Yup, the “hobbit socks.”
Well, I have been using this stuff, and have never read the reviews on Amazon until today. I’m gobsmacked. Apparently, if it does not work to prevent blisters on your feet, you can use it in your face… as a makeup primer. ROFL!!!
@BunsenBurner - on your face??? I can’t even imagine …
Yesterday was a lazy day for me. I woke up w-a-y too early (not sure why) and just felt a little worn out all day. (Too much golf?) I took the pup to the groomer and while she was getting prettied up, I went for a pedicure. Perfect remedy.
Today will be spent obsessing over Hermine and what exactly a post tropical cyclone means for us here on the RI shore …
