Best of luck to all with events this weekend or even just any “weekend warriors” out there!
@ohiopublic , a special shout out to you for your bike race - if it’s tomorrow, looks like you might be battling some rain if you’re out in the afternoon…be safe!
Mine is tomorrow, which should be just slightly better. I’m a wreck, as usual. About to head over to Bethlehem and meet up with all my RunningAhead ladies. We are taking one of WildChild’s bikes for my husband to ride around while we race tomorrow. This is fun, right?
Tomorrow for my ride too. Supposed to be 59 starting out which is a little cool for me on the bike. Maybe I’ll wear a long sleeve starting out? Maybe full fingered gloves?
I saw a deer too this morning on the way to my race. Unfortunately he was laying on the road.
So, my race is done - yeah! I really am not a big race fan! But sometimes, you’ve gotta…
SUPER humid to start - a little breeze but then while I was happy the rain held off, the sun decided to bake us a little bit. The setting was a local metropark so a fair amount of shade. And for flat Northern Ohio, a few hills. Yuck. None the less, DONE, and while it was a small race (less than 100), I did get 3rd in 50-59 age group. Definitely not my best run ever - but it’s in the books. I was more pleased with my S who did the race with me. 3rd in 20-29 and 4th overall.
I think we lucked out because it’s starting to rain now, and was earlier this morning.
Ohio- My husband says he would wear sleeves that he could take off and maybe an extra layer on his core (like a vest). He would probably wear full gloves.
Ohio, 59 is really a tough tipping point to decide what to wear. I would dress based on what the weather will be an hour into the race. What kind of race is it - time trial, longer road race? General rule I like to follow: under dress slightly 'cause you will warm up as you ride, particularly if you are riding at race pace.
Did a 45 mile ride today. It was hot, mid 90’s the whole time. Very little shade; felt like we were broiling under a magnifying glass most of the time; the sun felt that strong. The highlight of the ride was this 10 mile uninterrupted straight stretch at about a 1 1/2 - 2% grade where we formed up a double pace line and just went like a train at a consistent 20-21 mph. Last 5 miles were brutal though. My adductors started cramping in both legs. Took a few Enduralyte caps which seemed to help significantly. Should have started taking them earlier in the ride; may have avoided the entire episode if I had. One of the people I was riding with is my training partner who is a Nationals Champion. She’s racing tomorrow to qualify for next year’s Nationals. Wanted to get in today’s ride and tomorrow’s race before she goes in for her second hip replacement on Tuesday which will end her cycling for 5 weeks. The girl is just a beast on the bike!!
Really lovely 6 miles this morning down by the bay, then over to the ocean side. I have officially defected from the closer-to-home inland branch of my run club to the coastal group. For an extra 15 minutes in the car I can enjoy beautiful scenery & a nice sea breeze. Plus there’s a big group there who run/walk so I’m not by myself quite so often.
Congrats, abasket and son! Way to go. Good luck to all Sunday racers, too!!
The hike was amazing! It was a good idea to stay out of Napa/Sonoma and just explore the wineries around Santa Rosa, then make our way to the redwoods, hike for a while, then go to the coast to cool off and to have a wonderful dinner in Jenner. We stopped at a nearby beach park before dinner and walked to the where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean. Saw pelicans, seagulls, harbor seals, condors… Amazing. Glad I dragged Mr. into the shopping center near our hotel and made him buy a jacket before we went to the coast. Otherwise, I would have died listening to his whining about how cold he got. Lol.
Getting ready to leave Prague and I wanted to share something H and I were discussing. This trip was for our 30th anniv, so that gives you a sense how old we are :-). When we had been married 5 years, H had finished residency and I took a leave from work and we bummed around England and France for a month. It was magical in that young-lovers sense. Anyway, we were commenting about how we felt we were just as active in our vacation as we were 25 yo (walking around all day, fully able to climb towers, steep steps without huffing, etc) and we said our goal was to be the same 30 years from now!
