Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Piping in for some advice- has anyone ever bought Kuru shoes? I think I’m going to try them (I just need a good, comfortable pair of walking shoes) because they have a good return policy and I have a super hard time finding comfortable shoes. The walking shoes I bought last summer (and haven’t been worn all that much) have apparently been chewed up by one of the furmonsters in my house (meaning one of the dogs).

Also quick health update: I’m on a new heart med that is supposed to bring my heart rate down (the beta blocker alone isn’t working) and it hasn’t. I’m going in for an echocardiogram on Wednesday to make sure there’s no fluid or anything around my heart. My lovely cardiologist felt the need to point out that most people who die of lupus-related complications die of heart issues. :-S

I’ve never heard of them, but they sound good from their website. I would still go with Hokas.

Back from reunion weekend. It was lots of fun; H had a good time, too. Re: darts – not a thing in my hometown, BUT a classmate married a guy a couple years ahead of us, and he got really into darts, forming/starting the American Darters Association. He, sadly, died in 2009 but his wife (my classmate) and their kids are now running it. ANYWAY, she ran a little tournament for us Friday night. I actually scored the 2nd highest score, behind someone who plays a fair amount. Beginners luck, I guess – my 2nd shot was a bullseye!

At the class dinner last night H told me a couple of times how good I look compared to many, many of my (female) classmates. So many who are significantly overweight … I got the “Billie Jean King Award” for the most athletic woman attending. Seriously – many looked as if they couldn’t walk around the block. Yeah – guess I won’t stop running anytime soon. This morning’s “Mimosa Challenge” (9 holes of golf) was cancelled due to rain, so a bunch of us went out to breakfast instead. More fun times!

I guess what I’ve liked the most about the last couple of reunions is that none of the HS cliques exist any longer – it’s all about how much we have in common, growing up in that town, graduating at that point in time. I had some great conversations with people I wasn’t all that close to in school.

^^^I love your story “Billy Jean King” Guess she was an icon back then, right?! What a nice compliment from your H!

Sabaray, 15 is a long distance. We need to sub in that little doubting guy in your head with a more helpful one! I don’t think you ever know what you can do until it’s that day and you’re doing it - get to the starting line and see what happens at the finish. Keep working hard - you’re AMAZING! I’m envious of your hard, hard work.

Deb, thanks for the link. I’ll make a point to check something like this out. I feel like when my phone is sideways, the music jumps from one song to another - maybe that’s a setting I need to change.

Also, re: those iphone rebates - REALLY? My S has a 5-something and he REALLY needs a new phone but cannot shell out beaucoup $$$ - maybe he should be asking the Verizon store sooner rather than later?

Had a fun 24 hours or so with my girls out of town. A little outlet shopping, a delicious dinner at a tiki bar, and some exercise - a dripping walk/run this morning in D2’s neighborhood - the humidity was out of control!

CBB- You make us proud! That’s really cool. I agree- our HS group has eliminated all cliques and are enjoying each other as the adults we have become.

They think I am crazy with my running… Lots of overweight folks and we’ve had a number of deaths, sadly.

Having a nice time in Philly so far. DH and I spent the better part of the afternoon with our daughter in a nice Italian restaurant enjoying a glass of wine, a lot of food & some good catching up. I followed that with a run (more walk than run to be honest) on the Schuyllkill Banks Boardwalk. Now we are watching as a thunderstorm approaches. We get so little ‘weather’ in SD that we’re even excited about the storm.

The Philly Rock & Roll half was this morning. I felt left out, but I need to NOT be exhausted for the next few days so we can get out and about. Another time.

Niqui, lately I’ve been using a Spibelt for my iPhone while doing weights. I take it off when I do mat work, but other than that it works just fine.

I’m very happy with my iPhone SE – the smaller size that came out in the spring. I have so many pocketbooks and pockets that work with the smaller size – no need for a large phone for me. I am still eyeing the watch, though. Lots of pros and cons-- oh well, not doing anything until the end of the year, since I feel I need to get at least a year’s worth out of the Fitbit.

I convinced my husband to go to yoga with me, and we walked there and back.

I hope my reunion is as nice as yours, CBBBlinker. Based on Facebook photos I’ve seen, I’ll also be one of the fittest people there – and that was not my image in high school. I’m still trying to figure out what to wear that shows off the good parts and hides the not-so-good.

Abasket, I would have your S go to the Verizon store although I did my upgrade on line. They do not know how long this promotion is going to last, so I would do it pretty soon.

My D has the SE, it’s very nice. She likes the smaller size. I wanted a little bigger phone, better to read with these old eyes.

@CBBBlinker, how cool about your class reunion. My friend had her 50th last year. She was talking about what to wear and wondered if she could get away with leggings. I told her to rock those leggings, if you can wear them do it! She can, she’s in good shape.

4 miles in the bag.

We’ve had several deaths from out HS class, too, I’m sad to say. And while I know it sounded like I was bragging in my previous post (well, OK, I was, a little), there are quite a few classmates battling various forms of cancer. Several come to mind: 2 with brain cancer and 1, who has never smoked anything, with lung cancer. Plus a couple with various auto-immune diseases. I have nothing but sympathy for all of them. There are quite a few others, though, who are clearly not making wise choices in their lives.

Re: reunion attire – most women wore dresses/skirts (some quite frumpy, IMO), but a few wore nice pants. A good friend wore leggings with a very pretty tunic. Ultimately, it’s not about what you wear, though, so go with whatever you feel comfortable in.

22500 steps around Philly yesterday. Fewer today so far, but what a great day. Lots of eating, lots of walking - just the way I like it. I come alive a little bit in a large city.

Interesting reunion experiences! I haven’t attended one since my 10th, but there is a facebook group & I can tell the same thing is happening with the cliques - they are no longer. Part of me wants to distance myself from high school. I was a really different person then & I think I’m afraid I’ll revert to that person if I attend a reunion! Probably overthinking things.

This showed up in my Twitter feed - a power foam roller-like tool:

http://thebff.com/

Does anyone know anyone who tried it?

Haven’t run for almost 2 weeks. Want the knee to be totally pain-free before I start again. Targeting Friday now. See my chiro on Thursday. May schedule acupuncture as well. Had a cryotherapy session today. Always feel like a million bucks afterwards.

CBBB, congrats on your award. Your active lifestyle pays off!

Good luck Ohio! We spend a lot of time keeping our bodies going!

I have 102 posts to catch up on! Yikes! I’ll be back with an update on the RAGNAR race after I catch up…

This thread does move quickly! I’m anxious to read your RAGNER report.

Rain and darkness forced me onto the treadmill yesterday, but I did run 5k.

Yesterday had to give in to some time devoted to gardening (stop weeds!) along with my obligatory steps. But I had a dream last night that I had a great 4 mile run and the trees were all turning fall colors and it was beautiful - so does that count for a run yesterday or today?!!!

Sharing part of a post that @eastcoastcrazy put on the “getting older” thread - a 20 minute, no equipment needed (well, a jump rope perhaps) - would anyone suggest any alterations to this? I think this would certainly be a good workout for me!!

"And I do a short circut thing that I found online. I try to do this five days a week. I can fit this in even if I don’t have time to do anything else. It takes no special equipment and can be done anywhere.

  1. Pushups (started by struggling to do 10 modified - now do 30 modified or 20 regular)
  2. Squats (started doing 15, now do 30 or more)
  3. Plank (started at 20 seconds, now do a minute)
  4. 60 seconds of high intensity cardio - jump rope, sprint in place, burpees, whatever.

Repeat the circut of four exercises four times. So in the end of a 20 minute routine i’ll have done 80-120 pushups, 120 squats, 4 minutes of planks, four minutes of something cardio and some balancing yoga poses."

I would add walking lunges, oblique mt climbers and try to figure out some way to do a pulling exercise.

Today’s a special day for someone who’s aging like fine French wine…hmmmm…could it be @abasket’s birthday?

Missed my run yesterday as we had some significant thunderstorms sweep through at my usual running time. Couldn’t face driving to the gym so just bagged it. Went to Pilates mat in the afternoon.

This morning was a 4 x 5 speed workout. Well, speedy for me, turtle pace for the rest of you! Didn’t think I could do it but happily surprised myself. 15 minute warmup, 4 by 5 minute pace with 2 minute walking recovery, 10 minute jog to cool down. Only felt like throwing up once or twice. That’s a win, right?
