Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Sabaray I am sorry that it has been a tough week for you, but you are tougher. You are strong and have accomplished so much. We are with you.

What they all said, @sabaray! You got this!!

Early morning long pup walk – the sun was just coming up. I really love these crisp mornings! Now she (the pup) is already back snoozing while I’ll be firing up the vacuum to finish cleaning before our guests arrive. (Actually, she hates the vac and will likely disappear upstairs …)

Well, running from the Broadmoor isn’t too shabby. Altitude, but not as bad as Crested Butte. Mainly flat with gradual down going out and gradual up coming back. Incredibly gorgeous homes and neighborhoods. Lots of bunnies and deer. Pitch dark to start and I was very careful even with the headlamp. 5.2 miles done.

I have gotten back into running (after years of only running sporadically). I finally lost some weight (down to 112 for the first time in 10 years) and running 6 miles in the morning is kind of no big deal for me now (whereas before I’d get tired just typing the words…). But I know running is many people’s least favorite exercise. It’s all what works for you.

Great job @Classof2015 . Agreed that one of the “musts” of exercise is that it “must” be an exercise you are willing to do on a regular basis.

I think often running is the “least favorite” because people just expect to put on a pair of shoes and walk outside and immediately RUN for a distance of whatever. I have one friend who always says, “I have tried running a little when I walk, but it’s not for me” - and I get frustrated because I’m thinking “hey, I didn’t just start doing this - I had to work hard, be patient, follow a training plan, etc. TO get to the point of being able to run a couple of miles!” It’s more than just “running”. It’s breathing. The right shoes. The right clothes. The right time of day. The right pace. The right foot landing. And on and on. Each component taking some thought and trial and error. And reevaluating all that now and then!

But also ok if running is not for you. Walking is excellent. Biking is hard work but excellent for you physically. Swimming, also HARD work. Most exercise is HARD work. We aren’t 6 year olds with boundless energy and legs and feet and arms that haven’t endured many hardships!!!

Thanks abasket! And well said re: running. Took me a while to develop an efficient stride (where I wasn’t moving sideways or up and down – just forward). And I hate hate hate swimming.

Way to go, Classof2015.

We learned how to ride a Segway this afternoon and did a tour through Garden of the Gods. I wasn’t great at first and hit the curb and fell during the initial lesson. I’m fine. Did much better on the actual tour. It was fun.

That is great Classof2015.

I need the “love” button for your post, abasket. Running is hard, at least it is for me. I have found that I have really had to work hard to run even the short distances that I run. But the work is part of what makes it so rewarding.

MOWC, so fun on the segway! I hope that’s the last fall!

4 miles tonight - too bad I didn’t wait a little longer to go out because the cool front came through - oh well, sweat is good for ya!

So true @FallGirl - I’m still slowly working on the 5-10K - as much as it can be hard for me to commit to, a “program” with a plan seems to be motivating to me.

MOWC, a number of years ago I was in D.C. for the graduation of the son of our closest friends. The father and I decided to do a Segway tour of historic sites. It was a lot of fun. Particularly when we stumbled upon a couple of tree branches that made great lances for jousting. The tour leader was not as amused as we were :D.

LOL, Michael. Mr. B approved your conduct. There is nothing dorkier than a Segway!

…

A fitness tracker with kitty ears? OMG!

Segway tours are awesome! We’ve done a couple as a family & the kids had a blast. Such a fun way to see a new city. I remember that my feet kind of got numb, since you spend the whole time with weight on both feet, so I was ready to get off when it was over, but so much fun.

Heading off to run club this morning. I have a really unpleasant extended family situation to deal with later today, so I’m hoping to gain some relaxation & perspective during this morning’s run by the bay that hopefully will carry me through the day. Probably too much to ask of one run. Oh well - wish me luck!

Good luck, Gertrude! Not pleasant.

Managed an early, dark start 6 miles from the Broadmoor. There were scary deer eyes illuminated by my headlamp. It was 43 degrees! I wore my light Oiselle jacket over a long sleeved shirt. And gloves!

Just under 4 mile walk with the pup and one of our weekend guests – the wife. Meanwhile, both my H and her H were sleeping in …

Now off for an afternoon of sailing.

^^^Sailing sounds lovely!

Yikes! 43 - that’s probably half of what you would have at home!

Fall fell here overnight - it was a cool 63 this morning and only going to gain maybe 10 degrees today.

Sailing can be so restorative for your psyche but unless you are racing, also presents a challenge to find a way to keep active, especially on extended passages. A few years back, I was part of a 4 person crew taking a large sailboat from Ft Lauderdale to St Thomas. Sailing 24 hrs/day, for 6 1/2 days. Day 4, I got a little stir crazy, so I tied a 50 ft dock line to myself, cleated it off on a stern cleat, and jumped overboard to swim as we sailed along. Was great fun for a couple of minutes until I started hearing the theme song from Jaws resonating in my head. A little voice in my head said “Moron, you’re chumming for sharks and you’re the chum!” I quickly pulled my self back on board. A few months later, I happened to be speaking with a Coast Guard helicopter pilot and recounted what I had done. He shook his head laughing as he informed me that from the air he can see just how many schools of sharks there are offshore and that I was a lucky idiot particularly since the route we were taking went through waters with a lot of commercial traffic where garbage gets thrown overboard that attracts denizens of the deep! Hence my interest in adapting TRX to sailboat rigging, lol.

Yoga this AM.

D and I are running our 5K this evening. It is an untimed “fun run” but I am curious to see how I do compared to my prior time. It was supposed to be 84 degrees here today, but is only reaching a high of 75 and I am thankful for that.

10 miles this morning, had planned to join the group while en route but I think I’m getting faster. Thought I would meet them at an intersection where we could do the last part of the route together, but they were quite a bit behind me. Oh well. Per Coach, my pickups and recoveries are getting faster. Thank goodness.

Two yoga classes today–flow class early this morning (7am) and a restorative class at Noon.

Glad you had a good workout/run today, @Sabaray.
