It is warm here too…supposed to be in mid eighties today and tomorrow. Not my favorite running weather.
MOfWC, that’s it! Fitbit is a game for me, too. Sort of like a Pokemon - catch those steps.
I like that - “catch those steps”.
My Fitbit is my watch, my alarm clock, my “get off my behind” reminder, my fitness “basic” check. Like a minimum that I must meet each day. It’s an all day reminder of fitness for me. I have become better about the total # of steps being “good steps” - not the walk around the living room with a pint of ice cream in my hand steps (we’ve done this, right?!). And the getting moving each hour has proven to be a mental necessity and good thing for me at work. Good for posture and my eyes among other things.
Good morning all! Am I the only one without a fitbit? Maybe for Christmas…
I got a free 3-day pass to 24 hour fitness & tried out a Body Pump class - basically weight training to music. It was fun. Not surprisingly, I was able to do the lower body stuff with no problem, but had to take some breaks during the upper body.
I’ve never belonged to a gym before, but I think I will join. CostCo has a good deal on memberships - close to half price, but you have to pay it all upfront.
I have done Body Pump and I liked it, but it is hard. Our gym does an abbreviated one and a full length one. Something that helped me initially was just using the bar instead of adding weight, until I got the hang of the movements - which for me was half the battle. That’s always my challenge - if I go to yoga I find I’m still in downward dog while everyone else has moved on to salute the sun. Oh well!
Interesting article for all us late in life runners: http://www.runnersworld.com/boston-marathon/first-lady-of-boston
She is amazing! @abasket – hope your Fitbit shows up! Fireandrain – way to go on 10k! I’m going to sign up for some of those in 2017.
^^That is an AMAZING story! Thank you for sharing! I still find it hard to believe those men vs. women standards were that strong in 1966.
Thanks abasket! I know, right? She was a true pioneer – so dedicated – ran without fuel for miles and miles.
I’m back and caught up on all the posts. I managed to get my 20 mile run in late on Thursday and it went OK. It’s good to have that over and done with! Not nearly enough activity since then, though. Friday evening I flew out to Seattle - the flight was delayed quite a bit because of the storm, but I was very happy to just be able to get there. We had a long, fun, and successful day shopping for D’s wedding dress on Saturday. Yay! Sunday morning I had a nice 4 mile run in a light rain. Rain, hills, and leaves on the street are quite a challenging combination so my pace was slower than normal but it was still a good run. Yesterday was a long travel day and today I am back at work. Hoping to get a few miles in tonight after work.
MNK - your daughter’s wedding sounded fabulous! Congratulations! It’s so great to hear how much you and everyone enjoyed themselves.
abasket - so sorry to hear about your Fitbit! I hope your replacement arrives sooner than expected.
Gertrude - I’m glad the job interview went well, good luck with the job search process.
sabaray - you are doing great! I can’t wait to hear how the MCM goes.
BB - did you get any results from your appointment yet? I am hoping there is some miracle cure or treatment available.
I loved the article about Roberta Gibb - what an amazing lady. It’s so incredible how well runners used to do without all the “stuff” we have now - the hi-tech shoes and gear, nutrition and hydration on the course, etc. I love her attitude about running and the joy it has brought her.
@C3Baker - thanks for the report! Wow, you had a whirlwind week! So glad the storm fizzled out for most part and did not spoil your plans. So, the most important part - what kind of dress did your daughter pick?
Someone at the health club told me that he always sees me here. Does that mean he’s at club as much as I am?
I think I do get my money’s worth when you factor in the cardio equipment, weights, trx, misc exercise equipment, sauna, whirlpool, steam, swimming, basketball and more. I guess I get some health benefits too!
Working out is really the highlight of my day. Still extremely jealous of the “she who must not be named” retired cc member. With apologies to J. K. Rowling.
LOL. Bad Ohio! I am not ready to retire, but I wouldn’t mind shorter workdays. I want to run marathons again, but right now I don’t have it in me because of the long days.
BB…I am a Pokemon Go and Fitbit addict at the moment. I was losing my mojo getting my steps in and then the Pokemon Go got me moving again. I have loved exploring new trails and hatching those eggs!
5.5 miles today at a beautiful park where I walked around a lake looking at the beautiful fall foliage. I really like walking outside. My knee is feeling really good and the achilles tendonitis is ok, painful to start but better as I warm up. Love my new Hokas!
I work 30 hours a week for years until a couple of years ago when I went full time - what was I thinking?!!
(actually the part time - some years less than 30 was ideal when I had kids at home and in school - I went full time when the last one was a junior in HS).
H is retiring from his primary job (with state benefits) end of November. Sounds weird but I am not a fan of retirement - my mom is 83 and still works part time at her local YMCA! I’m hoping he’ll do something at least part time. I swear I’m going to have a Fitbit permanently installed on his being and force him to get active!!!
Great article on Roberta Gibb–times sure have changed and for the better!!
Yoga class and walking (3 miles) today. As (I think) the only non-runner who posts regularly, my gym membership is the best thing I do for myself. My trainer is there. I can take spinning and other classes as well as Pilates reformer. Plus, there are weights, treadmills, ellipticals, Cybex arc, and rowing machines that I can use if I want to work out on my own. It is a supportive environment. The club also has tennis and swimming (extra fees–which I don’t do). It’s the best money I have spent. I do better if I have a class to attend–I am more disciplined because of it.
Michael doesn’t run. Gyms offer a lot!
Such a great post, Sabaray, about the extra special support from MoWC. People being thoughtful and encouraging to to one another: what a great example from two awesome people of what this thread is about!
The Fitbit stories are so funny. I find myself moving my fitbit arm to make sure it records all of my steps. Kind of tough when you’re pushing a grocery cart though.
Yay for the dress, C3B!
I walked today and ran 6 miles yesterday. I welcome suggestions about a tapering strategy. I have a little under 3 weeks to go, therefore I’m planning a 10 mile run this weekend when it’s cooler, and then 6 miles and under up to the half day. Is this reasonable?
Yeah, I’m really not a runner in my own personal fitness program but I did do an explosive 30 yard dash on Sunday at our post wedding brunch. We had 60 guests in a dining room we took over at a hotel and one of the couples had twin 1 1/2 year old boys and a 4 year old girl with them. In all the mayhem, they lost sight of one of the twins who immediately made a mad dash on hands and knees to an electrical outlet, with finger outstretched to give it a poke. I got to it just in time to cover the receptacle with my hand just as his finger was about to get him zapped. Nice to know I can still move my butt on two legs, lol.
I am still so behind the 8 ball trying to catch up with all the posts here after 3 days of absence. I think I may just give up and move forward :).
I do like my gym too - I just so prefer to be outside if weather allows. Running, walking, biking, gardening. I think (for me anyway) it’s important to like the look and feel of your gym - it needs to be a somewhat motivating but at the same time calming place to be. Clean, roomy. Well worth the $$ if you discipline yourself to go!
I leave this afternoon for London to see S but got a run in this morning. It is very humid but I ran 2 miles before slowing down to walk and then ran the last 0.5 miles back home. I am improving.
Not planning to run on the trip, but am hoping to get a lot of steps in.
Loved the story on Bobbi Gibb as well as MOWC"s surprise gift for sabaray. I will try to post from my trip as I love keeping up with everyone on this thread!
