So wonderful @FallGirl ! Have a wonderful visit and enjoy all the new scenery - including the food scene!
It was 61 and 88% humidity this morning! I had a steady pace run this morning and I had a super hard time reaching target pace and sustaining it - when I compared it to my last steady pace run I was substantially slower, but then noticed the temp differential - 48 degrees vs 61. It makes a huge difference.
I belong to a gym but use it more during the winter months. I like having access to a pool from time to time and do enjoy the water classes when I can get to them. We may be looking for a new gym as one of the main reasons we joined ours was for Pilates and some of the medically supervised weight loss programs, and of course I am now doing Pilates at a more dedicated studio and well, weight loss - you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make Mr. Sabaray drink.
We have a lunch for “Boss’s Day” today - I gave in and made a Texas sheet cake. I also ordered some meals from Chef’d so I don’t have to think a lot about food after today.
FallGirl, have a great trip! I know it will be a lot of fun.
It was 64 here this morning. While it felt good, every 10 degrees of temperature over 48 DOES make a difference. I liked this temperature for an easy, short run, but it’s not fast running weather. I had trouble getting out of bed and only had time for 2.7 miles.
Last night was just one of those times when a run doesn’t go well. It was warm and very very humid and I was dragging and wanted to be done with it after only a half mile. I made it 4.6 miles and that was good enough. I have a long work day today with late meetings so I may just take the dog on a nice walk tonight instead of a run. We have a 5K race tomorrow night, the last in a series of 5 over the summer.
FallGirl - have a fabulous trip!
sabaray - sorry that Mr. Sabaray isn’t following your lead with the weight loss. I’m sure that is very frustrating for you.
BB - D’s wedding dress is beautiful! It was harder to shop for than I had expected. We got it at the 3rd store we went to and it was at least the 30th dress she tried on. It seemed as if every dress had elements she liked but she just wasn’t finding one that had everything she wanted. She did not want strapless and I was pleasantly surprised that there was a pretty good selection of non-strapless. The one she ended up with was a prototype from a trunk show of some designer (I totally don’t remember the name - I am no fashionista!) and she loved the style. The sample was in a blush color and she ordered the more traditional ivory so I am hoping she is as thrilled with the actual dress when it comes in. It cost exactly what she had targeted in the budget for her dress, amazingly enough, and I think the alterations will come in way under what is allocated in the budget because all it needs it to be hemmed and the straps shortened.
Congratulations on the successful dress shopping! It sounds gorgeous. I didn’t get to dress shop with my daughter because she found “the dress” at a bridal fair in Houston at a really great price while she was still living there and we were in Nashville. We had lots of hilarity doing the Mother of the Bride and M of Groom shopping, though.
Does anyone belong to Lifetime Fitness? They are opening one near me and it seems interesting, but I suspect it’s expensive. Was wondering about the level of classes, etc. I go to the Gold’s when I am in GA visiting my dad, and find they have more equipment (esp weight machines) than cardiac rehab.
Am getting back on the bandwagon. One small meal and two snacks really IS my limit. WW has been a dismal failure for me.
I think Lifetime Fitness sometimes offers good start-up offers. Check with them and see what you can negotiate if you are interested.
I belonged to a pretty nice gym about 4 miles from my house called Prairie Life. It’s a chain but doesn’t have too many locations. It provides towels (something I really like) and had good equipment and indoor and outdoor pools. I found that unless I was injured, I simply wasn’t using it enough. My husband goes to some spin classes in the winter and does weights in the winter, but both of us prefer to be outside whenever we can be. Our housing development also has a small gym which I used to use on bad weather days for the treadmill. Now that I have my own treadmill and TRX type stuff in the basement, I’m good. I have some dumbbells and kettle bells.
AND- when we built our new corporate office complex 2 years ago we put in a terrific fitness center with great locker rooms (and towels). I will use that more this winter. There are even some classes offered- spin, yoga and some outdoor exercise stuff. We have a run/walk path outside which is on land our company donated back to the city and it connects to a good neighborhood for running. I feel very fortunate. When I worked downtown (Nashville) I could rarely run at lunch because the route wasn’t great and I had no shower access.
Here’s an article I found. http://womensrunning.competitor.com/2016/10/health-wellness/reached-peace-unsupportive-partner_66492?utm_campaign=trueAnthem%3A+Trending+Content&utm_content=5806e1b342bece0007e6e3d8&utm_medium=trueAnthem&utm_source=facebook
About how someone made peace with an unsupportive partner. My H is very supportive but I know some here don’t.
D’s last boyfriend was not supportive or minimal support. This time, love of fitness is very important to her.
Good one, deb. I am really lucky that Mr. supports me in so many ways. Although my late night classes sometimes make him a little less supportive, but he knows it is temporary.
A new Lifetime Fitness just opened a few miles from my house. The place is a palace, it looks like an amazing facility - three stories, 186,000 sq ft, indoor/outdoor pools, squash and basketball courts, spa, hair and nail salon, outdoor bistro, studios for yoga, cycling and pilates, roof-top patio, sitting areas with fireplaces, the list goes on.
Based on the 24-page glossy 10x13" color brochures they keep mailing to my house, I’m guessing it’s pretty expensive. They don’t publish their prices though, which annoys me. I don’t really want to engage in a long negotiation just to use a gym. From what I can gather it runs around $150-$200 per month, with some sort of initiation fee.
Too rich for me and I would never use half of that stuff anyway.
Interesting article Deb. The problem in our house is not that H doesn’t support my fitness endeavors (they are minimal!) - we each have plenty of time these days to have separate interests. Might have been a different story when the kids were home/younger.
Our problem (or should I say MY problem) is that I want him - for his health and well being - to take care of his own diet/health/exercise/fitness. He’ll go to checkups, get required tests, that kind of thing. Make promises to the doc that he’ll lose weight, watch diet, etc. But here we are. He will go to the fitness center - truth be told there’s more social going than fitness (I’ve seen him there!) Biggest of all is the nutrition hurdle. He joined WW a few years ago, had some EXCELLENT success for about 6 months, got injured at work and has been off the wagon since. He weighs in pretty religiously, but that can’t be a positive experience! MAYBE retirement will jump start him. I can only hope!
The Lifetimes here are beautiful, but not located close by enough for me to join. If closer, I’d join and take lots of classes.
My husband goes in and out of being supportive. I also wish he had helped more when the kids were little. And he does require prodding to stay on track. His diet is pretty good, but he eats too much too late and then can’t sleep. He exercises best when I am also exercising—I think seeing me makes him feel guilty. He likes to go do whatever I do which I must confess I am not crazy about. Sometimes the whole point of exercising is to be alone!
My husband is very supportive. He’s 62, eight years older than I am. We were CrossFit members for awhile, but it was expensive and the gym was too far away, so we quit. But we bought a pretty decent home gym, and he lifts weights a lot. He also runs 30 minutes on the treadmill six or seven times every week. He has high cholesterol and blood pressure, but that’s got to be genetic, because he’s not overweight and he eats well.
He does stay on my case about exercising, which is a good thing! I am so unathletic that exercising has never ben enjoyable for me. But I keep running and walking! I joined WW again a couple of months ago and have lost 11 pounds. Still have 34 to go, though.
My husband is actually very supportive of my activities, but oddly enough that really annoys me. He is constantly volunteering to people that “his wife ran this, his wife is running this next” and frankly, I feel like it’s mine to own and share as I wish. I am always asking him what his next race is! Oddly enough, when we first met he was the very athletic one and I had to be dragged out kicking and screaming. Now it’s the opposite. In fairness though, his schedule makes it very difficult for him to have a consistent routine. He often arrives home when I’m already in bed and eats whatever he can find in the kitchen. Of course he always has an easier time finding the “not so good” items, of which there aren’t many.
Lizardly, I’m with you - I would totally join a Lifetime gym! I am so jealous of the great gym options my D has - I would love to be able to try some of the great Pilates and cycling studios I’ve seen in her neighborhood.
I’ve been a member of a great gym in the past–a family membership and I’d work out while the kids swam, etc.–but these days I use our local community center on a drop-in basis ($4.25 a visit, since I’m a senior citizen by their lights) for an occasional swim or treadmill. I noticed that they have some weights, and I may schedule a personal trainer appt so I can learn more about how to use those. I vastly prefer being outside for running regardless of whether–when I had a treadmill, I used it as little as possible and considered it incentive to get outside!–although I’m considering whether to get a trainer for my bike since I hate riding in the rain.
I bought a cheap piece of equipment this week–a twelve-rung agility ladder ($15)–after we used one as part of the trail running clinic I just finished. When we did the agility ladder exercises, I realized that I move well when I move off my left and onto my right, but I really struggle to move off accurately off my right foot to my left foot. It was quite a surprise! So I’m hoping doing some regular agility ladder games will help with that.
I got a new Fitbit Flex 2 a few weeks ago after losing my Fitbit One. It’s okay, there are things I like and things I don’t. One thing I really like, though, is the automatic lap counting for swimming. I swam today and just totally zoned out instead of trying to keep track of laps. It made it much more relaxing.
@deb922 - very interesting article – too bad her husband couldn’t be more supportive but I like her approach. My ex was not supportive; my fiancé got me back into running. Now I’m doing a marathon! (my first; his 35th). I’m either crazy or in love
I would never sit at work with a bowl of candy on my desk! Instead, I walk around and eat everyone else’s! (I do contribute) I wish they wouldn’t start with the Halloween candy in September!
Missed a FitBit hour today since I was in a lunch seminar and couldn’t get up. Instead, I challenged the speaker about his views (i.e. lack of knowledge) about Twitter and got him so confused that he tripped over his cord and disconnected his computer and presentation.
^^LOL!!! Perfect!
Aha! The real reason you have a fitbit!
MOWC - still laughing over the poor flustered guy unplugging his presentation.
I’m heading back to 24 hour fitness today on my final free day to do a Pilates class. I think it’s a mat pilates, no reformers involved. I will officially sign up next week, after I can get the CostCo deal. It’s $650 for two years, about $27 per month, which is a fabulous deal as far as I’m concerned, after pricing out the local yoga and pilates studios. There is an indoor lap pool, towel service, treadmills & ellipticals with personal TVs, TRX, and tons of machines that I have no idea what they do - all in good time!
