Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Thanks. He is very motivated and talented. Yes, he was in a wave or two behind the women pros. His age group has been in a very late wave before and behind older, slower age groups. He graciously (not) refers to “swimming through the floating manatees…”

He’s not beating himself up. He was happy with his bike and run times (especially if you take off the 5 minutes). He knows sitting outside on the left was a mistake. He’s a little disappointed that all of the errors cost him 2nd place, though.

He also said the bike course had some safety issues in the part that was in downtown Miami and one biker was hit by a car and was in the ICU. I think it is a dangerous sport.

MOWC, very insightful comments about your son’s race. When you are competing at his level, every little thing can make a difference because everyone is so well conditioned and trained. And then to have major time sucks like the penalty and the skin suit. Must have been very frustrating for him but glad to hear that he’s not beating himself up too badly about it. Gotta keep perspective and a sense of humor!

MOWC - can you challenge a marshall’s penalty decision? Did he think it was BS?

I never really thought how transitions could affect you until after my first race.

No- shockingly for him, he said he definitely deserved it. He was outside the limits, but may have forgotten about the marshall that would be right with the female pros. I think he took more risks because there were a lot of South Americans in the race and they cheat a lot. (this is a fact) In the South American races they don’t enforce the strict drafting rules the way they do in the rest of the world. It’s a problem in triathlon. You will see a huge pack of drafting South Americans just fly by another single racer.

I’m am thoroughly awed by your son, MoWC! Good on him!!

Wow, MOfWC, your son is amazing. To run a half without socks…

Thanks. He has his moments… Bunsen- yeah, that hasn’t worked out so well for him- at least not with Hokas. He had the same issue at 70.3 Worlds in 2013 in Vegas where there truly were logistical problems involving socks and a 1/4 mile transition run with your bike on wet carpet.

Wow, MOWC, it is amazing that your son did so well with all those issues. I can only imagine the frustration in not being able to get out of the suit! I’m glad he has a good attitude about the penalty. And wow, running without socks and ending up with blisters sounds brutal. He sure had an incredible performance!

sabaray - good luck with your race!!! We will all be cheering you on in spirit. Stay safe with that heat!

Classof2015 - how cool that you’re running the NYC marathon! What a great race to do for your first marathon!

Thanks C3Baker! I think it’s slightly insane of me to make this my first big race, but I’m excited to be a part of it!

So excited for you marathoners and half marathoners!

I’ll be thinking of all of you and looking forward to your race reports. You are all very inspirational to me.

Do you guys have a favorite salad dressing or foods you just need?

I finally found and bought my favorite of all time (Honey Dijon) and I am contemplating buying three bottles just in case the store runs out, as this has happened with a few past favorites. I need to know I’m not crazy!

I always do that with my favorite non-perishables. Who knows if Costco will continue selling Kodiak Cakes pancake mix? I have 3 large packages in my pantry.

Good luck at your race this weekend, Sabaray! We’re all going to be with you in spirit, for sure.

Wow, classof2015. I’ll be thinking about you in your marathon too!

MoWC, your son is really one tough athlete. I shudder just thinking about the blisters on his feet. Amazing talent. I’m imagining trying to get in and out of one of those suits. I’m challenged with a sweaty sports bra!

Gulp, deb922. No NYC marathon for me. Rather, a Disney half. I don’t think I’d be doing this if not for this CC group and all of the support and encouragement. The race course actually goes from ESPN Sports through Animal Kingdom and finishes after running through Epcot where they’re holding the Food and Wine Festival. We start so early to finish before the parks open, probably so the roads will be clear before the crowds arrive. There’s a celebration party at Epcot late Sunday night on race day, but I’m not sure I’ll be awake to be there.

I ran yesterday for 4 miles and walked a bunch today. It’s in the low 80’s, kind of perfect shorts and tee weather.

PlantMom, I wonder if you are going to get an extra hour of sleep on the day of your race!

The kickstarter page didn’t really go into any details. I am curious about this as well. The hub-less and spoke-less wheels look cool as all heck though.

And they’ve got an electric motor option you can mount inside one of the hubs, so you don’t even have to pedal if you don’t want.

9.2 miles which I didn’t want to get out and do. Gorgeous, clear day- 55 degrees to start. I thought about sabaray and Plantmom and the tough things they are doing this weekend and I got my butt out there! I got tangled up in a small-ish half marathon which was on part of my course. I ran that race a few years ago and it is REALLY hard. I was glad I wasn’t doing it, even though the course monitors cheered for me when I went by! I did a hillier route today to get ready for my hilly 10 mile race next Saturday. Once again, I needed to do this run slower than I did. I will pay over the next couple of days. Wore a Nuu-Muu dress with a long sleeved shrug over it, which I took off and tied around my waist the last few miles. I had a lot of shade, and wasn’t going to be warm enough without the sleeves to start.

FallGirl and PlantMom – I too have found so much support on this thread. I was MIA on CC for a solid 2 years while going through the divorce from h***. I feel like I’m finally coming back to myself and running was a part of that. There’s such a rush of positive energy I get from running. I know others here feel it too.

I’m excited for you ,Classof2015. I hope you enjoy NY. I ran it WAY back in the day. It was still huge, but not as huge as now. I think it was 1979. It was really hot weather that year. It was one of my first few marathons.

^^^I ran NYC in 1979! First and last marathon. My first husband was a runner and I went along with the training–kicking and screaming the whole time. We got divorced the next year and I quit running–too much bad karma. That being said, I still have my photo from the finish line and one taken during the race and I am proud of having run it. In fact, I had framers cut ex out of the photo at the finish line when I had it framed! I have the photo displayed with a bunch of other family photos. I lived in the midwest when I ran NY and was shocked by all the people warching and cheering on the runners–it was packed almost the whole way (except for the bridges).

After walking so much the first few days of the trip, I wound up with some sort of 24 hour bug and spent Wednesday in bed in my London hotel room. Thursday was a travel day and I worked Friday. So finally…I am back on track today. Early AM yoga and then I ran/walked 2.5 miles to pick up my car which was being serviced. Felt good to be out on a beautiful fall day.

A few nights ago I dreamed I was running very fast and felt like I was almost flying. That’s not how it is in reality. But maybe someday
