I know it sounds like a lot, but it’s been almost three weeks and my weight was up right before the race. Lots of fluids and carbs in the week prior. I’m now back to my mostly healthy diet of protein and vegetables with very limited quantities of pasta, rice and grains. No donuts. Which I might have had one or two of when training.
BunsenBurner – thanks for the tip – I think my feet were definitely sweaty. I’ll check out that polish!
C3Baker – that’s interesting that you lost one each time. Yes I think a dark color is the way to go.
Great news on the weight loss sabaray! Donuts are my downfall (Boston Crème – can you hear me?) so I totally understand how they could be part of training.
My toenails would get bruised in races with lots of downhill, even with bigger shoes. The first few days, I would hate for anyone to stand too close to me for fear he would tread on my tender toenails. The pain didn’t last too long, but it took a good six months for new toenails to come in.
I used to do some “toenail surgery” to help with the extreme bruising. I’d soak my feet in hot water, then get a sterilized needle and put it gently just under the toenail. Blood and fluid would be released and the pain would be reduced. I would often keep the nail (instead of it falling off).
In retrospect, I wonder if I could have iced and that would have reduced the swelling. When I start running enough to have toenail issues, I will have to try it.
Ah…that’s interesting (the toenail surgery). When I was younger, I did ballet and all the other girls lost toenails from dancing en pointe so I thought I was immune.
Classof2015 - I had the exact same issue after my first half marathon - both of my second toes were extremely bruised & the toenails turned black. Almost a year later, the nails are still not normal - they’re much thicker & kind of wavy compared to the others. Lovely I know. However, for me, the problem was completely solved by going up a shoe size, over the protests of the salesman at Roadrunner Sports. Like MOWC, I now wear a full size over my street shoe.
Wow – that’s interesting – thank you! In regular shoes I’m a 7; I bought a pair of Asics at 7.5 (same as my old pair) and they felt tight, so now I’m in 8s. Maybe I should be in 8.5s. And yes to the extreme bruising – the tips are black. Thanks for the input.
I am 7 1/2 in street shoes and that hardly ever varies. I wear 8 1/2 in running (as I said, except for Hokas which I think run big and I get an 8). Some people don’t like that much room in the toe and some shoes have different toe boxes where you will tend to hit the front more easily.
I might try another brand before I sized up any more - I wore Asics for quite a while but changes in style, fit etc. made them a less than ideal fit as time went on. I didn’t like Brooks previously but now they are my go to shoe.
Good point. Maybe I should switch from the gel Kayanos. I tried on Hokas – thanks for the tip earlier – but on the treadmill they were not as supportive (since I pronate) as the Kayanos. Maybe the store just didn’t have a full Hoka selection.
I don’t like Hokas on the treadmill. They have too much sole and feel too clunky.
It’s wonderful to hear of everybody’s outings. Congrats to MoWC and Gertrude on the big races! And the streak of 500 days is so impressive. Talk about getting it done! Gertrude, extra congratulations on the wedding and bday!
fireandrain and gertrude meetup-I’m jealous!
C3B and CBB, I’m sorry to hear of the current pains. C3B, keep taking it easy!
abasket, I wish I had helpful words to offer for your DH. I only know that for mine, motivation comes in the form of a health scare (most recent, his back) or the monetary benefits he receives after a good report in the annual corporate collection of BMI information. Sigh.
I met my sister in Miami Beach for a few days of mental R and R. We ran along the beach boardwalk, rode bikes, and noshed our way through some fabulous restaurants. There may have been a few specialty cocktails involved, too. I stumbled upon a lululemon store. I left after purchasing only one pair of Hotty Hot shorts. Sadly, their inventory of running skirts was limited to one bin. They seem to be phasing them out
This lovely cool morning, at home again, I ran six miles. DH and I walked four more this evening.
Miami Beach - glamorous life, PlantMom! Sounds like a fun trip. I hope Lulu isn’t phasing out skirts!
Got my miles in this morning - 5.75. Exactly.
Thanks sabaray. Yes someone (can’t remember who) said Brooks had a wider toe box or longer – that might be what I need. I realize feet change as we age (and exercise more).
I think it’s easy to get comfortable with a shoe and just accept certain aspects that are less desirable - I wore the 2000 and then the Kayano. I only switched brands when my size wasn’t available at the store and I tried on quite a few pairs then instead of just requesting “the usual”. I like the Adrenaline 16 and the Transcend 3 - the Transcend is substantially more expensive, but with the Adrenaline I need an insert which adds to the cost. The toe box fits my foot better on the Transcend - also the added bonus of a “cap” over the big toe - I don’t have to worry about my toe lift pushing through the end of the shoe any longer!
Question: has anyone here tried PiYo? The studio is offering some classes to try out - my trainer said it was “challenging”.
Even longer urban pup walk this morning.
I had been wearing Brooks running shoes for several years, just going to a chain sporting goods store, trying a bunch on and picking one. Then I decided to go to a local running store to get fitted; left with a pair of Asics. Those worked pretty well. When those were wearing out I went back to the local store; ended up with Brooks again. At first they felt fine, but then my toes started getting trashed. When I went several months ago I left with Hokas. I do like them, but I feel as if my toes have never fully recovered. And I don’t even run long distances. Annoying, to say the least.
It was tricky finding shoes that fit my narrow heels but I was fitted for Asics at the running store. Even though I am sort of " running lite" I have issues with the nails on my second toes getting kind of scrunched up and misshapen.
Hmm, if we’re going to have an ugly feet contest, I declare myself the winner! Black toenails, calluses, icky dry skin…all the result of a lot of running, sweaty feet and wet feet. I’m trying to rehab my feet this winter. Something I like is a foot peel made by Patchology and a foot cream by Bliss - “Foot Patrol”. I got one of those “foot files” to get rid of dry skin. You name it, I’m trying it. Worst part of Pilates is having my trainer see my awful feet!
Yes! Maybe I should switch from Asics back to Saucony for my next pair. Appreciate everyone’s input.
Ha ha - fair warning - never google search for “runner’s feet”. You’ll see some things that cannot be unseen.
lol thanks! sounds like a scary movie
