Just a long walk last night and today my knee is feeling great! Tonight is an event at our local running store with a Hoka rep and I’m looking forward to doing a run with them in a trial pair of Hokas. (And I should probably mention that there will be s’mores afterwards…)
PlantMom - how awesome that you met your sister in Miami Beach. That sounds really fun and great sister time together.
CBBBlinker - do your gait issues cause any pain as you’re doing the urban walks? Hopefully not!
C3B- The Hokas I am currently liking the best are the Clifton 3s and the Vanquish 2s. Bondi is good, too, and with the upcoming Bondi 5 they supposedly have made some improvements in the sole for better wear. (My daughter calls me the “shoe whisperer” because I know too much…)
I went to a Hoka event recently and tried the Speed Instinct on some muddy trails and wet grass. Loved them! But couldn’t quite justify the expense right now…
I really liked the Hokas last night! It was the Clifton that they had available to try and they were great. I really liked the cushioning and the overall feel of the shoe. Unfortunately, they don’t come in wide and I really do need a wide shoe. The Bondi is the only model that comes in wide. I think I am going to wait for the next Bondi model to come out and then take the plunge and purchase a pair. I hope I like them as well as I liked those Clifton last night.
It was a 3 mile run at the Hoka event last night and the guy in the lead is on the cross country team for our local university. He was really fast but I stayed with him the whole time. Afterwards he was really nice and complimentary about keeping up with him.
Oh, and even though it was unseasonably warm last night, the s’mores were really good too!
MOWC - Keep giving that Shoe Whisperer advice! We all benefit from all your experience!
Last day of the extended Indian summer we’ve been having…suppose to be 73 today! Everything crashes tomorrow (or overnight) when temperatures plummet into the 20’s. I’ve been spending each day after work working in the yard for an hour or so and then taking a dusk run. I’ve kind of been like a squirrel storing nuts for the winter - except instead of nuts I’ve been “storing” extra miles on the pavement outside!
Pup walk – and the sun is finally out! My gait issues seem to be quite improved; I have no idea why, but I’ll take it. And I got in some extra steps since I had forgotten today is street cleaning – oh the joys of urban living. If your car is not off the side of the street they’re sweeping that day, you’ll be ticketed and towed; not an inexpensive proposition. So, I dashed out at the last minute this morning, and then had to drive all over to find a parking spot. It’s about a mile away… More steps when I go to retrieve the car this afternoon.
Additionally, H had the bright idea that we should wash the condo windows today since it’s supposed to be warmer this afternoon. Can I just put it out there – I REALLY dislike washing windows! On the bright side, I’ll likely register “false steps” from said washing.
Anyone else here running a Turkey Trot on Thursday? The weather is supposed to be cooler here next week so I plan to do a dry run so to speak on Sunday so I can check out what layers I will need.
I am doing a Turkey Trot! I volunteered two years ago on the course, last year didn’t feel up to it but am ready to go this year. I need one “race” that goes well - hoping this one is it. Looks chilly here with a chance of AM showers - ick. The first year there was snow, ice and fog - not fun to run in and not fun to volunteer in, either.
C3B- Glad you liked the Cliftons. The Bondi has a different feel- a little more shoe, but still great. I have high hopes for the Bondi 5 with the improved sole wear.
CBB- glad your gait is doing better!
Our weather is crashing tonight/tomorrow, too- after record highs this week. For Monkey Marathon morning on Sunday (I’m working finish line) it is going to be really cold. I was sure the weather would be perfect because for the first year in about 5 years my husband declined to be one of the on-course cyclists. He has frozen and been miserable too many years, and he just wasn’t willing to do it this year. Now he’s glad! I’ll be fine- it should be in the low 40s by the time the runners are starting to finish. I’ll try to do my longer run tomorrow so I don’t have to deal with it before my finish line duties. I helped with packet stuffing last night- the runners (and me) get a nice, soft cotton short sleeved shirt and a long sleeved tech shirt which has the runner’s name (usually a crazy nickname) and then has the number of Monkey “kills” (completions) on the sleeve. It is really a unique event. Bunsen- you need to heal up so you can come do it. Another option- Sabaray and I do a slow run/walk some year! There is a fabulous potluck at the finish line in this big field and beer from a local craft brewery. Race is limited to about 350 runners. There is an early start for the runners/walkers who choose to do that.
3 miles this morning. My Garmin hung when I took it off the charger and I had to do a reset and then there was some icon on it that I hadn’t seen before. it might have been updating. I was late by then, so started off anyway. I thought my distance seemed right, but when it mapped it out after downloading it, it had, in face, missed my first little cul de sac.
Might transition to regular running next week. Had an 8 mile AlterG session yesterday. 2 miles at 5:00 minute pace, 80% weight. 2 miles at 6:00 minute pace, 80% weight. 2 miles at 7:00 minute pace, 80% weight. 2 miles at 7:00 minute pace, 90% weight. I have lost 5 lbs. and down to 135. My goal is 120 by the summer. I’ll dial it back if I find that I’m weaker, losing muscle, etc.
Does anyone know what happened to Pizzagirl? Is everything okay with her? I only lurk on this thread but I loved hearing about all the classes she was taking (as well as reading her views on other threads).
I have the Arc! It is the shorter, more circular stride version. I tried the other models and found that my stride felt a bit too unnatural for my taste. To me, the Arc feels smaller and less clunky than the other models.
Well, on my way home from the park with the pups one weekend I saw a man using an Elliptigo. There’s a pretty definite climb and putting it diplomatically, he did not appear to be an elite athlete and it seemed pretty effortless. There’s also a trail south of me that I think you’re familiar with, MOWC - that would be another option - and of course, some back country roads fairly close would be a third option. I need to find somewhere that I can try a few out. Some models are definitely preferred for hilly terrain - the Arc was not included in my list of recommended Elliptigos when I took their quiz. Some time ago I thought about getting a bike and that’s probably what I need.
