^Love both of those gifts!
^^^Sabaray sounds like your MIL knows you well and what you like!
That shirt is certainly appropriate, MOWC! @abasket, I’m sure Mr. Sabaray had a hand in suggesting the gift card. My MIL and I haven’t always had the best relationship, but I’m happy that it seems to be improving. A bright spot for the holidays!
ohiopublic – glad you’re not donating blood. Did I read you right (5 minute mile pace?) That’s a good work out!
It’s Day 2 of someone bringing in treats for the office. Yesterday was Dunkin Donuts; today is a box of Danish that everyone’s raving about. I put on my coat and walked a block to get fresh fruit (mango and melon). I was so proud of myself then someone else said they’re buying pizza for the office! Better put my coat on again…
Classof2015 - I’d like to run 200s and 400s faster but the treadmill’s at our health club are maxed out at 5:00 pace (:75 second 400 meters). I can’t go any faster on the health club indoor running track because the turns are too tight (12 laps to a mile). The area university’s indoor track is only available 1 day a week and has been closed during December. I know Woodway treadmills can go faster.
Someone once told me that track is the easiest sport in the world. All you have to remember is to turn left!
Lol so true!
You Cleveland area folks will appreciate this. Many, many years ago, I was in Cleveland (suburbs) on business and stayed right next to the Bonne Bell HQ campus. That company was a pioneer in the corporate fitness area and had a beautiful outdoor running track (not a 1/4 mile track, but a path that wound through trees all over their campus) which they allowed the public to use. I knew the CEO from the corporate running world and I was excited to try it out. I had a co-worker/engineer with me and he decided to walk/run the track, too. He didn’t have very warm clothes and somehow managed to get lost (which was almost impossible). He did make it back to the hotel eventually and was very cold. I explained to my outside counsel that we were late because Al got lost on the Bonne Bell track. He said, “Wait! He got lost on a running track!” I explained that it was NOT a 1/4 mile oval!
I did some media buying for Bonne Bell at a larger agency when I first started in the ad business. They were ahead of their time.
Bonne Bell used to sponsor an all-women’s race in Boston. It’s now sponsored by Tuft’s Health Plan. I have a friend/neighbor who started running it as a student at Wellesley and she has done the race every year since it started in the late 70s. She walks now instead of running. I walked it in 2006–my D and her boyfriend, now husband, were both training to run the Boston Marathon the following spring. It was D’s first time in a road race. I was very surprised that I was far from being dead last, which I expected as a walker.
Only exercise today–walking and shopping at the mall. I am hopelessly behind in everything.
I only know that I was addicted to Bonne Bell on my lips when I was a teenager!
Oh! I did the Bonne Bell 10K in Boston in 1977 (the first year), '78, '79, and '80. One of those years I fast-walked it with a friend who was on crutches (I think it was '79) and we came in close to dead last–at 72 minutes flat. I remember running past the MIT dorms on Memorial Drive in Cambridge with the music from Chariots of Fire blasting from the roof of one of the dorms–and a whole lot of guys from MIT out there cheering us on.
I did a Bonne Bell 10K in San Francisco in 1980, too. That was weird. I’d gotten used to Boston, where the spectators are really encouraging, and in SF they were dead silent.
Weren’t we all, abasket! It was a great company and the leadership was really committed to health and fitness.
For all you outdoor runners, cyclists and other varied outdoor activities, do you carry a form of identification “just in case”? If not, you may want to look into a company called RoadID.com. They sell high quality ID wrist bands and other forms of ID tags designed for athletic use. You can customize 6 lines of text to include your name, names and phone numbers of emergency contacts etc. They sell 2 versions of the product. One is just the ID band/tag and the other includes an annual subscription to a data center that will provide your medical history to a health care provider that calls and reports a serial number that is unique to you and listed on the wrist band. Both products are very reasonably priced. I just got a tag that slides over the watch band for my IWatch and that lists my name and year of birth, the names, phone numbers and relationship of 4 emergency contacts and the name and phone number of my primary doc. Highly recommended.
I’m pretty sure people on here have used Road ID - MOWC and Deb922? I feel like Deb 922 used their app (or something similar).
Last time I checked, Road ID didn’t make one for the Garmin? I’ll have to check again.
I have RoadIDs on my shoes, and a wristband I keep in the car to wear to dog events.
Ohio, no I don’t think they make one that fits on the Garmin watch straps.
Back from NYC. Even though Tuesday was our actual anniversary, (and part of the reason for the trip) we had our “big dinner” on Monday night. Try to imagine how completely stunned H and I were when at the end of the meal the waiter brought an anniversary card signed by our kids instead of the bill!!! OMG, BEST kids ever! (H said it was a good thing he didn’t order the REALLY expensive wine …)
Totally did the tourist thing, even for all the years we lived in the NYC suburbs. The 911 Memorial Museum was so incredibly powerful; hard to even try to describe it. We also did the Circle Line boat tour and went to the Top of the Rock Tuesday night, after seeing “Book of Mormon,” which was great.
Tuesday I had 20,000+ steps, including the 3.4 mile run I did in the morning. Yesterday I spent 50 minutes/10 miles on a bike, since the club facility doesn’t have any Arc machines, and I’m not crazy about ellipticals.
Now that we’re back I’m in total panic mode for getting ready for Christmas … Totally worth it, though.
I’ve skimmed all the posts I missed the last couple of days. Welcome to new posters on this thread; hope all who are hurting heal quickly; kudos to those resisting holiday treats … Haven’t thought about Bonne Bell in years, but totally loved their stuff back in the day. I think they’re still around?
That is very cool, CBB. What thoughtful kids! Glad you had a good trip.
RoadID is a must, for sure. I wear the slim band (no clasp) on my right arm with my FitBit (switch FitBit to right arm to run) and the Garmin is on my left arm. My son wears his RoadID all the time- even non-exercising. It’s just like we all used to wear the Livestrong yellow bands. Same band. In fact, the FitBit slim fits the Livestrong type bands.
WARNING- if you EVER buy a RoadID, you will receive an email from them every single day for the rest of your life. It’s a great company and product, but I’m ready to scream. It’s been years…
Got outside for the first time since Saturday. Beautiful morning- clear and 39 degrees. Felt chillier than that, but it was nice. The adjustment back and forth from dreadmill to outside and back is, well, an adjustment. It’s just different. 3.7 done. My son is here but still nursing quad tendonitis so not sure how much he can do as far as biking and running. He plans to do some swimming.
That’s an amazing gift, CBB! Nice your son is there, MOWC.
Beautiful morning here too - about the same weather! 7.5 miles done. We’ll run Saturday, have some coffee together, then head off to various family gatherings.
