So sorry you’re having such a rough spell, CD. Adding my arms to the group hug.
Wow, CD, you sure have a lot going on. Sorry to hear about it all. I agree that you need to quit the PT job, if possible. Please take care of yourself!
Saturday’s 10K went pretty well. H and I ran nearly identical times but had completely different races. My first 2 miles were a little fast, which is typical for me in a race as it takes a little time to settle in. The following 4 miles were right about where I wanted them and my pace was the same each mile +/- 2 seconds. If nothing else, I can be consistent! And then a decent sprint for the last .2 miles. H, on the other hand, went out WAY too fast for the first three miles and then was dying so he had many short walking stints in the last 3 miles. I caught up to him just before the 6 mile mark and we sprinted in together, he ended up just a little ahead of me. So we had the same result and I’m really happy with my race and he was not happy at all! It was a small local race and they had timing issues at the finish so I don’t know how I placed but I think I did well. Supposedly they will be emailing results sometime this week. Oh, it was 12 degrees at the start of the race! Made it all the way up to 16 by the time we headed home, but that was a really cold run!
Yesterday I ran 12 miles because I am behind on my training plan because of work travel, weather, and other issues. It was a pretty tough run but I got it done. That’s about all I can say about it!
Gertrude - glad to see you back! Thanks for the info on the 7 min workout app, I am going to look for it. I have had trouble getting to my training sessions at the gym and have not been good with keeping up with strength training and I know how important that is! I can always find a way to fit 10 minutes in my day, so this could be really helpful for me. Great job with your half marathon!
deb - wow, all your skiing sounds wonderful! Congratulations on tackling that challenging trail and for continuing to push yourself.
Classof2015 - wow, great time for your 4 mile run! Nice work!
I had to look this up after watching Lady Gaga perform last night. She is incredibly athletic and energetic. https://www.popworkouts.com/lady-gaga-workout-5-factor/
abasket, the pork belly was…divine, one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten. You can buy them in the grocery store, but we actually received this one from a friend of H’s in the meat business. It had already been cooked once and packed in a vacuum bag. I was very skeptical about this hunk of meat, initially. When I took it out of the bag, it looked like a big slab of bacon, absolutely covered and marbled with fat. I didn’t even think it smelled particularly good. Fortunately, I had done a little research by which I found a Bon Appetit video I used as a guide to successfully transform the gross looking blob into a marvel of crispy-on-the-top, melt- in-your-mouth, but tender-throughout slices of goodness. I cut the slab into long thick strips, poked hundreds of little holes into the fat cap, seasoned it with salt, pepper, and thyme, and roasted it on a wire rack for 45 minutes at 350 followed by 15 minutes at 400 for the final topside crisp-up. Easy. I froze part of the slab, and I’m not sure it’ll ever get cooked in this house. This should be once in a great long while kind of treat!
PlantMom – it sounds yummy! And I bet it smelled great while it was cooking.
CountingDown – I always get bad news in waves for some reason too. And the right food (or the more often, the wrong food) can be so comforting. No way around it. Hang in there. First you need to be right physically before you can get back on track with exercise and diet.
Thanks sabaray, PlantMom and C3Baker (boy that race sounds cold!). Sounds like you kept a good pace all the way through – fingers crossed that you placed!
This morning was a little warmer than it has been - easy pace run of 6.2 miles with a friend I am doing a half with in a few weeks. My legs are tired. Saturday my hamstring kept tightening up in the cold but this morning I didn’t have any trouble with it. I’m ready for spring to get here.
Too bad we’re not all neighbors - we could have had a heck of a Super Bowl party with all the food!
3.4 miles this morning, at a faster than usual pace. I must have been still stoked from the Patriots’ win last night! What an amazing, awesome game!!! We were at BIL & SIL’s place, about 15 mins from us here in FL. We had Maine lobster for dinner – we ARE New Englanders, after all! Very yummy.
Kudos to the racers; hugs to CD.
Very good race, C3B. That is seriously cold!
Warmer here this morning (45) but still felt damp. 3.1 miles once I pried myself out of bed.
Bad weekend of eating on the mountain at the church retreat- not to mention all the wine. One of the classes was a wine and cheese pairing. Really good stuff. Super Bowl food back at home to cap it off. Nothing healthy about it. And- people have dumped some of their leftovers in the break room at work…
CD I left a life sucker of a job last year and have never been happier. Don’t kid yourself, you can move on and do better, life quality wise.
Speaking of pork bellies…
@MichaelNKat or anyone, I have super dumb workout question, when I do sets of crunchies and or leg lifts, I rarely perspire, it burns though. Does anyone know if this means: a) I’m doing them wrong or b) perspiration doesn’t equal efficacy on floor exercises? Should I add weights, or do I need to add more sets until I’m dripping sweat? I usually do these on nights I don’t do cardio or I’ve overeaten, imagine that
Oh @CountingDown , hang in there, it will get better. And spring will come.
CD – I, too, have left jobs that have been emotionally and physically bad for me. Life is too short. I’m so sorry about your dog, and the car accident, too.
Great article in today’s Post about how Tom Brady has stayed so healthy at close to 40:
Another 3.5 mile run on the log - it was 53 after work, couldn’t resist. Tomorrow will be in the 60’s but thunderstorms so I’ll really have to get creative to at least get my steps in. Wednesday there’s snow in the forecast. I’m not going to complain!
Stuck at home hopelessly with 4 inches of snow on the ground and possibly more to come at night. Just hope no squirrel will take shelter in a transformer tonight.
Did some weights, and kid showed me her snowboarding skills in our driveway. I wanted to wrap her in bubble wrap, lol.
Great article, sabaray!
Good luck with the snow, Bunsen!
Excellent article.
abasket- we are supposed to have really bad thunderstorms tomorrow, too, with very high winds in the morning so it might be a treadmill morning for me. Ugh.
Yay for Tom Brady fitness at 39. Good article. Hopefully he can keep it up in his post-football career as he careens into our demographic
.
Snow day, BB! Hope you keep your power.
60’s in February, abasket? That’s a heat wave. I hope deb922 keeps her skiing snow.
Went out for a four mile run/walk this morning and followed up with some kettle bell swings and light upper body weights. DH and I walked four more tonight. My legs are tired, though. Back to the healthier diet today. Greens, yogurt, fruit, and a chicken kale sausage.
@PlantMom – I bet Tom will be posting here soon. Under the name “Pats4Ever” or something like that. We’ll have lots of tips for him ![]()
Going away soon with fiancé (aka Marathon Man for the 35 NY’s he’s done) for our first real vacation in a long time. Planning a June wedding; trying to come up with ideas to make it personal to us. I googled a super fast older woman who ran the 4M on Sunday in 27:45. I think I may use her wedding vows ![]()

Awww @Classof2015 I’m so happy for you! We’ll count down her for wedding bells!
Wonder who the “most” famous celebrity to post on CC has been??
BB, that amount of snow is not typical for you right? You have my sympathies!!!
Weird weather this year for sure. A hard December, very cold, fair amount of snow. January started out frigid and then went mild the rest of the month. February a mixed bag so far - but yeah, 60 in northern Ohio - not typical!
So exciting, Classof2015! I hope you have a great getaway with DF, your soon-to-be DH!
I envy you having a running partner in your mate. I’m very grateful to have a walking buddy in mine.
@abasket – thanks! Everyone on this thread is invited! Save the (as yet undetermined) date!
@SalveMater, sweating is a function of thermal regulation. The lack of sweat when doing sets of ab exercises doesn’t mean you are not getting the benefit of them. The burn you are feeling is more telling. As long as you keep your abs burning during each set, I wouldn’t be too concerned.
I’m doing a workout tonight consisting of 5 sets each at very heavy weights of squats, presses, deadlifts and curls. I will be resting 1 1/2 - 3 minutes. My studio is cool. I will not break a meaningful, dripping sweat. I will get a great strength workout and by the time I’m done, my entire body will be a dishrag. It’s just not a routine that will cause me to sweat profusely.
