Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Gosh, so many posts to catch up on! What a busy group we are!

I ran 5 miles Friday night. Saturday morning was a 3 mile race that was fun, many of our Back on My Feet members are in training for a half marathon in May and it was fun to cheer them on. Since the training plan called for a 13 mile run on Saturday, once we got home we went out and ran another 10 miles. It is always so hard to do a long run shortly after a race, and this was no exception. Just a really hard run, but I got it done. This morning I took the dog to one of our nicest parks and we had a good 4 mile walk through the woods, around a lake, and just enjoyed being outside. Then this afternoon I had to drive 6 hours to Pittsburgh for a week of meetings. What a waste of a day to spend it in the car. I am hoping to run here in the morning but I’m not that familiar with the area. The front desk clerk at the hotel gave me a nice map with a 3 mile running loop, but I get disoriented easily and it looks kind of complicated (plus it will be dark!).

busdriver - congrats on your half marathon! That is a great time, you should be really happy with your pace. I cannot imagine the pain you must have been in (and continue to be in!) with those blisters - you are one determined lady! I’m so glad that you qualified for the Pikes Peak run that you want to do. Great job!

abasket - how awesome to be selected as a fitness ambassador! And you get swag too! They made a great choice in picking you - you are a great champion of fitness and setting reasonable goals and holding yourself accountable.

CBBBlinker - safe travels home. I’m glad you’re able to stop and visit with your son, I’m sure it is fun to be able to see his new place. I hope he is enjoying the renovation - it can be fun to have that kind of a project if you don’t feel pressured by a timeline.

Off to read up on shoe inserts!

Thanks, MOfWC! Ordered those insoles.

Proud of you busdriver. Way to compete.

Congratulations busdriver, that’s quite an accomplishment particularly the way you persevered through what was undoubtedly an ordeal. You are tough!

I’ve enjoyed reading about everyone’s splurges. We are a very weird breed to get so excited about insoles, orthotics and over priced things to wear on our wrists that talk to us, lol. I just engaged in a splurge too. Something with 2 wheels that I certainly didn’t need, had not budgeted for but did an admirable job of rationalizing to myself. Kind of a very self indulgent reaffirmation of life. My father had been in the hospital for 9 days and we didn’t think he was going to make it. Things turned around and he’s back home now. So I bought it. To sweep out all the bad mojo that seemed to be a cloud hanging over the last week and a half. And at 6 months same as cash financing, how could I restrain myself.

OMG, Michael. Fingers crossed for your dad. Hope the new two-wheeled toy will serve as a good distraction fro you. Do tell us more about it.

So glad for some good news about your father, Michael! The bike is a good reward!

Glad to see you spending your own money, Michael - for a good reason! Glad your father is on the mend.

MNK glad things are going better with your father. And treating yourself with the bike is a good thing.

Congrats @busdriver11, great job through adversity.

@abasket I always put inserts in my shoes. My LRS is really good about recommending what I want and they keep records so that I can buy the same thing next time. I buy new inserts for every 2 pairs of shoes I wear out.

@MichaelNKat, glad to hear your dad is doing better. So what kind of 2 wheel conveyance? I’m going to guess…fat tire bike? They are all the rage here. Lots of winter events and they are grooming trails a lot of places I go to.

Went to my bil’s cottage this weekend. No skiing for me, H was on call and couldn’t go. Big race at the place closest to the cottage and conditions were warm and icy I did get in a couple of nice long walks in the snow. In fact, conditions have been bad this year and we have another warm up so I’m sad but I’m not sure but I think my XC ski days are pretty much over. I wanted to go somewhere north but H is tired and not wanting to travel. He travels a ton for work and we will be out of town for 2 weekends in a row.

Bad news, got in a car wreck on the way home yesterday. Got caught in a snow squall of warm heavy snow, it was surprisingly slick. We skidded off the road and hit a tree. Everyone is fine but the tow truck driver didn’t think the car was drivable. Thankfully my IL’s were right behind us and gave us a ride home. Now I have to figure out how to get this car repaired an hour away from home.

Oh no @deb922 ! I’m glad you are ok! Weather related accidents are so scary! I hope you car can be mended.

MK, continued prayers for your dad!

Thank you everyone for your good wishes. It was a frightening lesson in how when the elderly are hospitalized for life threatening conditions, the presence of family members who can serve as advocates can mean the difference between recovering enough to return home or dying in the hospital. It’s a complicated story but in a nutshell, my father, who is 89, was admitted with a number of things going on that in of themselves were life threatening. He was also unable to chew and swallow food and had aspirated soup while getting a transfusion as an outpatient at the hospital. For 8 days, he lay in the hospital without any food and nourishment and because he had pulled out a nasal feeding tube, the attending doctors had a perspective that this was the end. My sister and I basically took the position that they were letting him starve to death and insisted that the nasal tube be tried again. It was done and 3 days later, he was able to be discharged, his swallow functions restored enough so that he could eat puréed foods, and he is now back home with my mother. What the future brings it will bring, but yesterday he was riding their recumbent stationary bike watching TV. We have 24 hr/day home assistance for him and he is getting home PT and OT, and if an acute episode occurs, well that will be a hell of a lot better than slowly starving to death and wasting away in a hospital bed. It all makes me wonder about the number of elderly who die in the hospital when there could have been a different outcome.

@deb922, that must have been frightening, glad you are ok. And since you and Bunsen asked, ;), I bought a Cannondale SuperX 105 cross bike. So why when I already have a cross bike? Well this is where the rationalization comes in. The new one has hydraulic disc brakes. The existing one has cantilever brakes which I liken to Fred Flinstone dragging his feet to stop the Flinstonemobile. Did I need it, nah. Did I want it, you betcha. And my Sturdy Girls race team training partner is buying my old one for half the cost of the new one. Coupled with the same as cash 6 month financing, how could I not :D. It was tough to find it though. Because the cyclocross race season is coming to and end, there are no more Cannondale, Specialized or Trek cross bikes in production until later this year and there are very few in inventory. Cannondale had exactly 4 left in my size across the country and only this model.

Deb- I’m so glad you are OK. That is scary.

Deb, very glad you are okay!

I was too tired after the weekend to do anything this morning - I heard wind most of the night and I might have had two glasses of wine with dinner instead of just one. I was very glad to see all of our very large trees standing this morning. I am going to do a short run after work.

Yesterday’s workshop was PiYo and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I was surprised to like it, but it was fast moving and fun. The studio is going to introduce it next month as a regular class which I am really excited about. Definitely burned some calories and sweat a lot. My rear end is really tired - lots of squats! That’s why I needed extra wine.

Costco had the Charge 2, the Alta and the Blaze watch in stock - none as pretty as Bunsen’s! I am taking a long weekend so am planning some hot yoga and a little rest. D is coming for the weekend so I’m sure there will be some shopping in there too.

5 miles on the treadmill this morning. I heard the wind howling all night and just couldn’t face running outside in the dark in a place I’m not familiar with. The hotel I’m staying at is next to an LA Fitness and there is a breezeway attaching them, so I didn’t even have to go outside. A much better alternative this morning.

deb922 - so glad that you are OK! I hope the repairs don’t turn out to be a big hassle.

MNK - glad to hear your dad is doing better. I also wonder about hospital patients who don’t have anyone there to advocate for them - it’s frightening.

Michael-i hear you on the patient advocate thing. So glad your Dad is better.

So glad that bike purchase worked out. Sounds like hydraulic brakes are an important safety feature. I’m hoping you might be available to help me write any future large purchase “justification” script that I would use for my wife. I would probably need your services on call 24/7 as a potential purchase could happen at a moment’s notice. Please let me know your hourly rate and other terms that might apply. Of course I would sign any hold harmless agreement that you might require.

H thought the hydraulic disc brakes were no big deal until he got a bike with them. Game changer as you know @MichaelNKat

Well, the insurance contact called and they approved to tow the car to a body shop here that we’ve dealt with. Unfortunately when they called to have it towed, the shop that has it isn’t sure that it will be repairable. So an adjuster is going to look at our car and make a determination. Darn, I paid the car off in December and was so happy not to have a car payment.

Not looking forward to buying a new car. Will buy another Subaru Outback as I love this car.

I would like to say that @MichaelNKat has a bike problem like many of us have a shoe problem. I mean, that bike was such a good deal, you couldn’t afford not to buy it

deb, so happy it is just the car and not the humans!!! Subarus are great. I know a family that survived a horrible accident (car rolled down a steep embankment off a rural road) without a scratch. They bought a new Subaru to replace the one that saved them.

At least shoes, tights, tops and jackets are cheaper than bikes! I use that argument at my house…

Glad for the “happy endings” in the car accident and for dad.
I’ve been on vacation last couple of weeks, but have been hiking and walking a fair amount. Longest (or at least toughest) hike was 4 miles into Haleakala and then back out again. My friend had a really hard time. We did make it up for sunrise, which was pretty spectacular. We hiked/walked over 6 miles most days.
yesterday I fell on an uneven sidewalk, and wound up in ER. I’m fine, just very sore and feeling stupid.
We will be heading home very late tonight, so we are going in search of easily walkable waterfalls, and will drive up to Kauai’s north shore.

Seems to me that all the Lululemon being bought in this thread could add up to a nice expensive bike real quick!
