Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I got my stuff out of my car today. @dmd77 the tow truck driver pointed out to me that the sensors on the airbags had deployed but the airbags didn’t. I don’t really understand. We did swerve for quite a while, we might have built up speed and so hit the tree over 12 mph.

^^^Is that something you should take up with Subaru? That the airbags didn’t deploy???

Another 5 miles on the treadmill this morning. This has been a really tough week, I will be glad to go home. My head hurts from thinking too much. Today’s meetings made me really wish that I drank beer or wine or anything.

deb922 - I hope you’re able to get a good settlement out of your car and get a replacement that you are happy with quickly.

Happy Birthday DOWC! You two are quite the active couple and it’s wonderful that you have been such terrific role models for your kids, their friends, and others.

BB - wow, that is impressive to have weaned yourself off sugar. I admire you!

I’m sorry, CD. You have so much on your plate. What a mystery about the missing cardiologist.

Enjoy the visit with your daughter, Bromfield.

Happy Bday to your H MoWC!

I ran just under 3 miles this morning. Did not feel great at all. In better news (well, besides the two or three frozen thin mints I scarfed down after lunch), today I got the healthy cooking back in order with a beautifully formed loaf of whole wheat bread, a curried chick pea, sweet potato, and almond stew, and a new batch of yogurt now incubating.

Yum sounds great Plantmom!

C3B, work sometimes sucks the life right out of us doesn’t it?

I’ve got to say, I hope to NEVER wean off sugar! I fully appreciate a good donut, cake, pie or ice cream. And I don’t ever want it any other way! I’ll leave the “average” sweets behind but an excellent baked good or frozen concoction? I’ll wait in line.

Kudos to BB though if that is a desire of yours though!

No worries, abasket, I too will not pass up a good donut or a slice of eurocake. But I discovered that super sweet stuff like glazing on donuts or frosting tastes too sweet and makes me nauseous. Ditto most candy. I will gladly have a fancy truffle that is mostly cacao butter and other non-sugary stuff, but a bowl of M&Ms does not make my heart skip a beat. I have not had a Coke in several months (last time I took a sip when we were on an international flight).

Mr. Sabaray got me a mini package of Godiva cordial cherries which I love - no way am I giving those up too. I’ve been pretty good at avoiding donuts, though - unless they’re the really good ones! Some things just have too much of a chemically (is that a word?) sweet taste to be enjoyable.

A bit over 6 miles this morning; had Barre class yesterday afternoon. Glad to have it done.

I’ve been getting emails regularly from the folks at Precision Nutrition; this morning’s email was an offer to purchase “The Precision Nutrition System” - essentially their do-it-yourself guidebook for $49. Never one to pass up a bargain, I bit. I want to see if this is a sustainable option that makes sense for me before committing to a year of coaching.

Waving hello to everyone from our winter wonderland here at home. Those white sandy beaches are already a memory … Ah well, it was great while it lasted!

When we got here last night, H unpacked the car, packed an overnight bag and took off again for NH – in my car! (He has 2 sports cars, but took mine due to the snowstorm last night/this morning.) He has a board meeting today and didn’t want to risk missing it/getting stuck. This time it’s fine – I’ve got lots to do in terms of unpacking, laundry, etc., etc. Not sure this bodes well for the future, though …

So, no gym for me today – hope to get the pup out for a walk later.

@CountingDown – sorry to hear about your accident. Hope things improve for you ASAP!

All my bad eating has finally caught up with me – up 2 pounds. I know that’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but I’m now over my official “time to be take action” line. So, gotta start recording every ounce of food eaten.

I may try a week of no chocolate, to see if my taste buds change like Bunsen. But do I eat the bags of candy currently in the house, or just throw them in the trash?

Wait – you have bags of candy? Coming over!

Give away the candy. Then you can feel virtuous.

Give away the candy to people you don’t like. >:)

Yay sabaray. Good idea to start small. Smart marketing on their part to charge a comparatively small but noticeable fee.

I struggle with balancing nutrition and exercise and really needed some guidance right now, so this really came along at the right time. I really like the Run Fast East Slow cookbook, but I’m struggling with putting a food plan together. I know what I like to eat and what’s easy to prepare, but at times I think my nutrition plan (or lack thereof) is really hurting me physically. We shall see. If it was up to me, I’d eat a lot of eggs, pasta, fruit and filet. Somehow that doesn’t sound real balanced.

I think you will do well with that, sabaray.

I have an interesting twist to my running “life”. I’m sure I’ve posted that I pretty much started my competitive running career as a member of the Texas Instruments racing team. We were pretty intense and won corporate nationals several times (the team still does…). It was very fun, but there was definitely some pressure to perform at your highest level of ability and the stakes were high. My 5K PR was at corporate nationals on the Stanford campus back in the early 80s (19:25). I was also on a very competitive team at my next employer, and my CEO was my coach (even before he was my CEO). Also some definite pressure to do well.

I have enjoyed my latest corporate team, which is likely to have the last runner in the race as a member. We very much encourage walkers and all level of runners. Unfortunately, the cheerleader and organizers have either left the company or lost interest, and to say we are weak and low in numbers is an understatement. We haven’t had huge buy-in from top management, either. Lately our number 2 executive (will be next CEO) who is a former triathlete and still excellent runner has become interested in getting the program off life support. Needless to say, we are all jumping to attention. This is a good thing, for the most part. He appeared in my office yesterday to ask me who the “fast” runners are and how we can get them back involved. (Well, we don’t have many…) He wants to bring the company truck out to the races with refreshments etc. and generate excitement. My request was (of course) NEW SHIRTS!!! Our shirts are like sweaters. He wants to break 20 minutes for 5K and he’s about to turn 50. He wants it to still be fun and encompass all levels, but he also wants to win. He wants to beat his wife’s company team and that will not be easy. They have some fast runners. We have 64 year old ME! I could feel some of my anxiety about how I do in races coming back, even though he would never think I didn’t do well enough. He’s now wishing my son hadn’t been over-qualified for the job here for which he interviewed. He joked about changing our hiring practices. I told him that actually happened a little bit in my early corporate team years. TI flew people over from New Zealand to compete on our team. They were legitimate company employees, but still…

Anyway, I’m cautiously excited about the revival of our team, but we’ll see. I told him the guy who worked in the mail room was fast, and the executive was heading right down there to call on him. I hope the guy doesn’t have a heart attack! We Shall See.

I think I like the idea of an employee’s compensation based on running times!
I always joke that IF my daughter should decide to get married some day, that future husband has to have a mile time trial. Anything under 5:00 meets with automatic approval. 5:00-5:30 is provisional with a year to bring it down. Anything over 5:30-no approval.

A sub 4 minute mile is also incentive. She would get 75 % of will instead of a normal 50/50 split with my son. Of course I’ve given my son his potential wife’s standards as well.

Sabaray, I sympathize. I also struggle to eat right for heavy training. My basic diet is pretty good, but making the right choices to fuel intense activity is tough.

Laughing so hard Ohio. We just talked about incentive trusts in the class I am taking: dollars for GPA, licenses, etc. I am tempted to ask the prof if he has encountered that kind of an athletic incentive.

They just delivered Portos again to the office…sigh, I ate several creamcheese filled pastries yesterday too dangit! Why can’t they ever deliver veggies and salads?!? grrr, will power is waning.

Will need to do some quick math to figure out how many minutes/hrs on Stairmaster so I can eat those delightful concoctions.

I love Portos ^:)^ Do you recall that saying, ‘nothing tastes as good as thing feels.’ Not so when it comes to Portos. I want Portos to cater my funeral when I die

Keep posting your running times, spur me on!

I don’t know what Portos are!

You know, if we look we can find excuses to eat what we shouldn’t. The first excuse we need to lose is, “because it’s there I must eat it”. Until you can tackle that a fair majority of the time, you won’t win. Period.

Because exercise helps but exercise doesn’t undo the nutritional content of the food that went in your body. In other words 200 calories of lean chicken and 200 calories of cupcake nutritionally are two totally different nutritional compositions.
