Safe travels, abasket. Good luck sabaray and Fallgirl. We want good race reports!
Welcome home, Bunsen. Sounds like a lovely trip!
I got home late last night and leave Monday for a 2 day trip to the Detroit area then Florida on Wednesday. I’m getting pretty worn out. Hope I can do a longish run on Sunday. I just don’t have it in me for tomorrow.
Well, not so fast. I (thankfully) emailed outside counsel to confirm the Tuesday deposition before I left the office. He called me and said he thought he had let me know that the deposition was cancelled! He was very embarrassed (for some reason the email hadn’t gone through, he discovered.). I’m SO glad I called! I’m very relieved that I don’t have to make this trip. It will be rescheduled. I was going to Birmingham, actually. So- now I have some breathing room and can pack for Florida in normal time!
Many, many thanks to all for the well wishes and prayers for B. All went extremely well; doc said everything was the best case scenario. Recovery will not be easy; SIL will have her hands full trying to keep B from doing too much too soon. He’ll stay in the hospital 5 - 10 days, depending on how he heals.
The surgery went about 1 1/2 hours longer than SIL was told, (9 1/2 hours total) so at the end we were all in the waiting area getting really worried, but trying not to show it to each other. Waiting was a family affair – SIL, my 89 year old father, my other B (identical twin to B having surgery) & his wife, and me. My father was getting really antsy as the waiting dragged on; he was convinced it would be bad news because it was taking so long.
Oh my, almost 10 hours. It sounds like the surgical team was thorough. Hope his stay in the hospital is on the shorter end of the predicted recovery time. Hugs.
Wow, CBBBlinker – that’s a long long surgery – waiting for it to be over is so taxing. I hope he recovers without incident. Let’s hope the worst is behind him.
Got out for the first time since last Sunday and did 7 miles. Felt good, but cold.
CBBB, so glad your brother’s surgery went well. I hope he has a smooth and uneventful recovery.
Today’s race is in the books. I managed to shave 3 + minutes off last year’s time but still did not do as well as I had hoped to. Last night it was snowing but this morning was overcast and in the low forties, so good weather. I got off to a good start and felt really good up to mile 5. There’s then a series of rolling hills from miles 5 to 9 when there’s a brutal uphill to finish the course. My pace suffered here, so I need to keep working on those hills. I felt my effort was consistent throughout but staying hydrated and cramping is becoming a real issue for me. Suggestions are welcome.
My goal was to improve and I did that. I like the course and the scenery so I’ll be back at it next year. Group of us had a nice breakfast out after and I’m ready for a nap!
Way to go Sabaray! 3 minutes is a lot! I wish I had advice re: cramping. Do people take salt to avoid it? Those rolling hills sound tough. The only half I ran had the start and finish in the same place so the hills were predictable at least. A hill at the end would have killed me.
I too highly recommend salt capsules. When I ran Kauai, I passed a guy who had a really bad leg cramp. I shared my stash of Advil and electrolyte capsules with him and kept on running. I saw him at the awards later, and he thanked me for helping him make it through the finish line. I use Endurolytes.
Sabaray- Great job! The half I’m doing in April is apparently pretty hilly. I’m getting nervous!
I did nine miles today around the place where the half is (I went to the battlefield to run again today). I downloaded an app that has a personal trainer and did one of the longer runs. The program ended when I was at about mile 7.25, so then I listened to music. This is the first time in about eight years that I’ve listened to music while running outside! It helped so much with this funk I have been in. I ran at the same place last Saturday and did 8 miles. It took me about six and a half more minutes than it did last week to do 9. I will be trying this app again on Thursday for a treadmill run.
I’m also glad that I felt SO much better during the run. Still tired, but no upset stomach. Progress!
Endurolytes work very well. Hammer is a good company when it comes to sourcing the ingredients for its products. I’ve used Endurolytes for years, having sworn off sweetened electrolyte/ energy drinks. Instead, when I do 50, 60, 70 mile rides in heat, I drink water only, take Endurolytes to replace electrolytes and consume solid food for energy replacement. Meets all of my long endurance event nutritional needs while avoiding any gastric upset from sweetened sports drinks.
I can tolerate Nuun well, but it’s awkward to mix and carry during a race. Other drinks really tear up my stomach. Today I had some Picky bar before the race. Mostly water during and at the end mixed Gatorade with water and could just hear and feel it sloshing in my stomach. Not a good feeling. Capsules and water might be a better option for me.
I have a half at the end of April, another hilly course. There’s a training run over the course that I might go to, I think that might help.
