The training run on the course sounds like a good plan. You could try the capsules then, too. I was sloshing terribly through that hot half I ran in Bethlehem last September. It was hot and I was trying to stay hydrated, but I’m not sure why I had all the sloshing. I normally don’t.
Definitely try the capsules on a training run in advance of the event. Ya never know how you’re going to react,
I did 13.1 miles this morning. It wasn’t too cold, but it was REALLY windy. I struggled with the wind a lot and just didn’t have a good run. The training plan called for 18 miles today but I just couldn’t do it. I am probably going to downgrade and do the half marathon next month instead of the full.
CBBBlinker - I am so glad to hear that your brother’s surgery went well!!! That is an incredibly long surgery! I can’t imagine how scary it must have been to have it go on for so much longer than anticipated. How wonderful to have so much family support during the surgery. Prayers for a successful recovery for your brother, I imagine he will be in for tough times for a bit.
MOWC - glad to hear your work trip was cancelled! Hooray!
sabaray - great job with your race, that is a lot of time to improve! Especially with a hilly course! Your training is really paying off! I have been plagued by cramps in my last two marathons and have just started taking the Endurolytes that a fellow runner friend recommended. I’ve used them on 3 long runs so far and they haven’t bothered my stomach at all. The only tricky part is arranging my run to be near an operational drinking fountain at the right time! They don’t turn the drinking fountains on until May here, so there are a lot fewer options for water this time of year.
C3Baker, sometimes, nature works against us… I almost cut my 18 miler short because of the rain and the wind once. Finished it on the treadmill, slowly warming up from the state of torpor induced by the frigid weather… It was one of those days when Mr. did not want to go to the trail with me. It happens!
Salt pills aka Endurolytes do not upset my stomach because they do not have any “bug food” aka carbohydrates. They are just electrolytes, so plain water can be used to wash them down. You do need to have an alternative source of energy though… A bar or some gel maybe.
I really appreciate the encouragement - slept really well last night but had to get up and start moving. I never thought I’d see the day when it was uncomfortable to just lie in bed! I have to carry water with me - we just don’t have the trails with fountains in my area, unfortunately. I think I have a plan, but nutrition and hydration is something I really need to work on. Michael - you are 100% correct as always - I am going to try them next weekend when I’m close to some facilities!
I’d really encourage everyone to work in some cross training. I think that having a more balanced program has really helped. One of my fellow runners commented yesterday that I looked like I had lost weight - and I haven’t. I really think it’s the Pilates. Too bad it isn’t aerobic!
Well- I’m having one of those days. I had big plans for this morning’s 11 miler. I was going to the hilly park (Monkeyville fame) and run/walk the big hills and really accomplish something. That all sounded great until I actually woke up this morning. I couldn’t face it. It’s a bit of a drive to get there, whether the golf clubhouse would be open for a water stop was in questions, it’s cold…anyway, bailed. Now, here I sit with no motivation and a real dilemma. I guess I’ll get out there and just do what I can do at some point.
Just wanted to share this for those of you who think I’m always on point with my training no matter what. Some days you just have to regroup a little bit.
It was 34 degrees with light snow this AM and it did not feel like a good run to me. Had to slow down to a fast walk for a little bit. Finished with a better time than I expected, but did not break 30min mark. Ran 30:55 which surprised me. 4/12 in my age group. Trying not to kick myself that if I hadn’t walked that bit, I likely would have been second…
Oh well. It was my first race of 2017, I finished (upright and breathing!) and beat everyone on the couch
Wow, fallgirl! I think I would have been afraid of slipping in the snow in that race! Glad you finished in a time that was better than expected, even if you didn’t break the 30 minute mark.
Does anyone use wireless headphones? I’m going to start using an app on my phone for some of my workouts, and those would make it so much easier! I’m usually pretty cheap when it comes to buying regular headphones (no more than $10!), so I’m a bit hesitant to just purchase whatever with these more expensive wireless headphones.
@FallGirl Congratulations on your first race this year. You were a star.
Yoga class tonight. My D is driving up from Providence–needs a break from school! We’re going to yoga together and then H is taking us out to dinner.
Nah: My H got wireless headphones and he loves them. He’s a big music person and travels several times a month from the east coast to the west for work. He gets through it by listening to music. He bought Beats by Dr. Dre.
FallGirl, that is a great time! You are right - you beat everyone on the couch and then some more.
In all seriousness, 34 degrees, light snow, and you ran under 31 minutes? Be very proud of that!
FallGirl- I think that is excellent for the first race of the year and in snow! Congratulations.
Wireless headphones- I am loving the ones I got in December from Amazon. They are Plantronics BackBeat FIT. I’m really happy with them. I hesitated for a few years on the wireless headphones, but these were recommended and they are excellent.
Well, I managed to do 11 miles. It was a sunny day with some wind, but not horrible. About 39-48 degrees while I was out there. It was a struggle, and I was still faster than I want to be for that distance (and more miserable as a result), but it’s done. I did a few hills (not huge) and wound around enough to get 10 and then added on for 11. I need to up these long runs before my June race, but I have time. I just don’t seem to have the interest or motivation for them…
Our water fountains on the trail were back on, which surprised me since we had a below-freezing snap last week. I was excited about that, reached for my HumaGel, and discovered I had (deliberately) left it in the car since I didn’t expect to have water. It helped to have the water, though.
Good morning from at least for today, sunny California ! 30 minute run to start the day - it’s hilly here so that was a whole lot of new for me!
Congrats to Sabaray for shaving time off - that IS a victory . And to fall girl for even showing up in the cold and snow - your time would have beat me- fantastic!
CBB that is a long long surgery, best case scenario are very good words to hear.
Soaking in the low 70s here for now - might get one more day of sun and 60s but looks like rain for Tuesday - a reminder of the temps home in Ohio is keeping me “glass half full”!
That’s a terrific result, FallGirl! I would not be out in the snow - my least favorite weather to run in. Great job.
Enjoy abasket! It is a gorgeous day here in SoCal, about 15 miles inland. I know that by the coast it can often be foggy and overcast even when it’s crystal clear inland, so I hope you are getting the beautiful day as well.
Six miles on sandy trails with giant hills yesterday - NOT my favorite run of the season. Lots of people got bug bites as well. I may skip that run next year!
Good job, FallGirl! Tough to run in cold weather and snow. You did very well – -- a lot to be proud of.
C3Baker – I didn’t realize your full had the option to do a half. That might be the better plan (but see how you feel). The thought of doing 18 miles is very daunting.
They had a big half today in Central Park. Molly Huddle’s time was incredible – 1:08 – but she is amazing. And she’s 32! Which kind of helps. Over 20,000 people in this one. You have to time qualify (I definitely didn’t make the cutoff) or run through a charity. Biggest downside in my mind is you end up down by Wall Street, so there you are, sweaty, tired, and the wind off the river is fierce.
Nahnah – you are clocking some serious miles there! I’m glad you felt better. It’s awful to want to run and schedule the time then your body has these annoying aches and pains.
Thanks for the headphone recs!
I used the app again today (I believe it is called apptive) to do a walk for my cross training day. I did a 30 minute hill interval. Um, wow! It definitely got my heart rate up! I’m not sure how smart it was though, as I have a six mile run schedule for tomorrow and six miles is back to seeming like a lot! Curious to see how my legs feel tomorrow. I need to get back in the habit of using my foam roller.
I forgot about the NYC half today! A 1:08! With the way my pace is going now I’m not sure a 2:08 would be realistic. It is incredible what some of these runners can do!
Helped Mr. to dig drainage trenches, pruned plants, and filled the yard waste can to the brim.
Lots of upper body workout!
Hoping that abasket is enjoying some warmth in CA today! Sounds so much better than the bone-chilling pouring rain we have today.
I am hoping the rain lets up by this evening for my run. I’m planning 5 miles.
MOWC - great job getting your long 11 mile run in yesterday. I appreciated your Saturday post how you just weren’t into it. Glad you were able to do it yesterday.
BB - yard work is great exercise! Makes a personal trainer totally unnecessary. I hope you aren’t feeling all that hard work too badly today. Sometimes I can find muscles I didn’t know existed from doing yardwork or barnwork!
It’s chilly here but at least it’s sunny! Went to TRX/Pilates yesterday and was glad I did - felt so much better at the end of class after getting everything moving again. Did an easy 5.5 this morning, glad to have it done.
Happy Spring, everyone!
I managed to get up and out this morning for 3.2. My legs were extremely tired from yesterday’s run and I was crawling. But- I did it! Just like sabaray! It was a little dark (not enough for the headlamp) when I started. It’s spring break for our schools, so the neighborhood was pretty quiet. I found a small rubber ducky in the street which I brought home. I collect them. Also saw my first spring bunny!
