3.1 miles. Shorter distance than I have been doing, but I’ll take it as a win, considering MY internal dialogue was going like this: OK, I’m out the door at my usual time, but I think I’ll stop at the grocery store on the way … and then the drugstore to get a birthday card for D … and how easy would it be to drive right by the gym and continue on to the car dealer for a (free) car wash … and while I’m waiting I can have one of those yummy yogurt parfaits they put out for breakfast … and then it will be well past my usual workout time, so I may as well go home … but that’s not good, so I’ll skip the car wash and go to the gym, but I’ll only do a mile or so … Yeah, WAY too much chatter in my head this morning. SO, I’m feeling victorious.
B seems to be doing well, all things considered. He’s not in any pain since they still have him on an epidural – but when that stops, he’ll likely be uncomfortable. Several tubes and bags; SIL is hoping for fewer by the time he goes home. Yesterday afternoon he was supposed to be moved into a private room, which will help – not only more space for visitors, but also no noisy roommate.
Last night I ran 3.5 miles with the running club. H tried to run/walk for 30 minutes and ended up in a lot of pain. I think he is slowly realizing that recovery is going to take time, there is no quick fix. In the meantime, he’s kind of a pain to live with. I do feel really badly for him, though. My work schedule has gotten crazy so I’m not going to be able to run with Back on My Feet on Friday mornings, but at the moment Wednesday mornings will work. So I had a 5 mile run with them this morning - it was cold and very windy! I think it may be a good switch as it appears they need more volunteers on Wednesdays (everybody likes to go on Fridays!).
CBBBlinker - I’m glad your brother is doing well. I’m sure moving into a private room would be a big improvement. When does he expect to be released? Will he have follow-on treatments or just the surgery? (And I didn’t mean to make it sound as if I’m minimizing “just” the surgery - that must be a brutal recovery!)
Gertrude - Congratulations on the new job, I hope it is something you will be very happy with going forward!
C3Baker, sorry to hear your husband is still in pain. Mr. B drove me bonkers when the torn meniscus sidelined him from running. We got him a knee surgery and a stationary bike, and things improved dramatically.
Perhaps this thread should be renamed “family rehab corner” - D ended up in urgent care this weekend after the intermittent back pain she’d been experiencing turned into a “fork in electric socket” sensation. A visit to the spine and pain clinic this morning has her scheduled for a MRI - they think she has a herniated disc. She’s been working with a trainer twice a week and quite a bit of what she described to me just sounded awful and not necessarily aligned with her goals - more like what I’d imagine Cross-fit to be like. Fine if you’re already in shape but not if you’re looking to lose weight as your primary objective. They’ve referred her to PT and happily one of the places they recommended is a Pilates studio with PT services. She’s just too young to experience something like this.
Oh wow, a herniated disc sounds terribly painful. How horrible that the trainer she was working with wasn’t having her work on things in line with her current fitness level. Especially if her goal is to try to lose weight, this injury must be a big set-back. I hope she finds the PT helpful - maybe she will become as big a Pilates fan as you are! Keep us posted on the results from her MRI.
Had a BodyGem RMR resting metabolic rate measurement study. My RMR is 1820 calories per day. They say RMR is the number of calories your body burns each day with little or no activity. Based on sendentary lifestyle (office worker)factor of 1.2 my daily calorie use is 2220. If I want to lose a 1/2 pound per week I would reduce my daily caloric intake by 250 calories. One pound per week would be 500 calories per day.
Then I can add back in exercise calories which can typically range from 250-750 per day to increase my total calories per day.
Sabray–your poor kid. A herniated disc sounds so painful–hope she’ll find some relief/healing with PT.
Congratulations on your new job, Gertrude.
Went to yoga last night and then to a power class (free weights and body weight exercises set to music) this morning. I’m going to try and do this class 2x week, rather than spend money on a trainer since I haven’t found anyone as good as my old trainer. New barre studio opened near me and I think I’ll try a class.
Sabaray- that’s HORRIBLE news! I’m so sorry and it makes me mad that the trainer might be the cause! I hope she can get some fast pain relief and then get to the root of the problem. I feel so badly for her.
C3B- Could your husband’s issue be partly caused by the SI joint rotation issue. Has a good PT checked for that- there are some simple tests involving leg length discrepancy and hip alignment. It can cause a lot of pain.
Made it to Florida. Long travel day and no more miles tonight for me! I did get to have lunch with another CC friend (Patsmom) in Ft. Lauderdale.
I hope your D is not in too much pain @sabaray. And hope the PT/Pilates works for her.
Likewise I hope your H feels better soon @C3Baker .
I have not mentioned it before but the outside of my left hip has been bothering me for over a week. I don’t recall any injury and it doesn’t hurt when I stand, walk or run. It is painful when I get up out of a chair and when I roll on my left side when I sleep. I am going to wait to see if it gets better soon, but I am continuing with my walk/run/yoga routine. @MomofWildChild I have long known that one of my legs is longer than the other and I suspect that could be a factor.
It was so nice outside last night that I decided to walk to the library (2 mile round trip). H and the dog walked part of the way there with me and I continued on. Found out that very shortly afterward 2 different women were groped by a man while out walking in my community. It was a few miles away but still…creeps me out.
Ugh, FallGirl - That’s awful. I hate when such simple, pleasure filled, HEALTHY activities are ruined by jerks. It’s tough - there isn’t always someone in my life to walk with - and honestly, I like the alone time outside - walking to the library - jeez!!!
Sabaray, I hope your D gets some relief and forward movement soon. That description (fork in an outlet) give me the heebie jeebies!
Traveled home from CA today. Managed to avoid crappy airport food except for the McD’s breakfast sandwich. I lead a sheltered life I know, but was stunned to see people bellying up to the bars at 9am in Las Vegas for mixed drinks and craft beer. Ugh.
Happy to be home and back to my more typical eating routine and foods I really like to eat.
sabaray, what happened to your daughter is maddening. I hope she recovers quickly. I can’t stand it when I hear about trainers who injure their clients like that. There are so many morons calling themselves trainers who don’t have a clue about proper assessment, programming and progressive training. Unfortunately, in an industry that has grown so much, there’s little real control or regulation that assures competency.
There seems to be a fitness studio popping up on every corner in my neck of the woods… No way the meatheads running some of these are qualified to do so… My kid used CrossFit in Geneva and really liked it, but when she tried it at one place in Seattle, she was appealed how stupid some stuff was.
Sabaray, hugs. When they hurt, our hearts bleed. Hope she recovers quickly.
It’s so frustrating. I was thrilled when D was taking more interest in her health and fitness. She’s very strong and worked with an excellent trainer a few years ago, so she definitely learned the proper way to lift. Combination of weight gain, sedentary desk job and sporadic exercise previously just met a perfect storm with the workouts. Rowing, deadlifts, Russian twists, kettlebells - not enough rest between sets - agh. Too much too quickly. I suspect our planned half this fall is a no-go now.
Inspired by CBBB, I decided to try one of the Octane machines at the gym this morning. I went with the XTOne in “run” mode. It was tough. I also added a HIIT booster than varied the workout - so pedaling in squat position, arms only, reverse slow, reverse fast - it was a challenge to keep going. Tough 33 minutes, including the cooldown, but I was pleased to see my HR stayed low. That might be my new go-to cross training. Also did a Barre class yesterday that involved a lot of arm work. Now I’m going to rest!
I am frustrated right along with you. The poor girl! Good workout, as always, sabaray!
6 (instead of the 5 I hoped to do) flat, pleasant Florida miles. Lots of old people out walking tiny dogs. The sun rises really late here, so I wasn’t out the door until after 7:30 and saw the sunrise. My husband ran, too and left after I did. We are back and showered and the rest of the household is still asleep. Well, the cats are up.
@FallGirl – I have the same left hip pain! Comes and goes but when it’s there, I almost can’t sleep because of it. Do you also have sciatica pain on the left side?
50 minutes on the Arc + 10 minutes on the Octane Lateral machine. @sabaray – my gym has several of the XTOne machines + 1 Lateral. IMO the Lateral is good because it provides different muscle motion than what I normally do. I’ve done some time on an XTOne, but not 33 minutes! Kudos to you.
Took D and her fiancé out to dinner last night; a 1 week late birthday celebration for D. She just took a new position at the place she works – comes with a hefty salary increase. As I’ve mentioned previously, she does CrossFit regularly. I worry some about her getting injured, but she’s also a certified personal trainer (not in CrossFit), so it’s not as if she doesn’t know what’s going on.
Winter has returned with a vengeance here – single digit temps with the wind chill yesterday; a little warmer today. Where the heck is spring???
@FallGirl – I hope so – I also have (and have had for a while) this occasional sharp shooting pain down the front of my left leg. Feels more like it’s in the bone than muscle. Comes and goes. I’m glad your hip pain is better today. Mine has abated. If you figure out what it’s related to, I’m all ears.
Bromfield2 – let me jump on and say thanks for mentioning those poses. It’s strange though that the pain is just on one side. I guess maybe we all favor one side, leg wise.
