5 1/2 miles on the hills before leaving Georgia. I didn’t have to go in the dark, so I got to see the gorgeous homes and golf course views. My husband started with me and turned back when we hit 2 miles. It was a beautiful morning. We undid all that with a traditional road trip stop at Bojangles for breakfast.
Bunsen, that’s just awesome! I hope it comes through, and even better than she expected. Employment, hallelujah!!
I’m not a usual poster on this thread but have a question for you knowledgeable people. My H is in amazing shape and just an all around natural athlete. Plays 2 man beach volleyball 4 days a week at a high level. He also plays tennis 4 days a week. Sometimes after a good tennis match he will smell like metal. Any ideas as to what causes this? He is in excellent health.
Keep your fingers crossed! I will be celebrating when she gets that email. She has already had a verbal offer from another place that disappeared when she countered. The reply was that they moved on to another candidate. Slimy, but legal.
The sun is out, so more stepping all over town gathering stuff for the house. Surprisingly, Mr. is so on board with me and does not mind looking at lights and other thingies.
It was real battle with the first two places we owned together.
@mom60 - my first thought is that he is burning some of the muscle for fuel. Does he get enough carbs to fuel his intense workouts?
Good call Bunsen. A metallic taste in the mouth or a metallic odor to breath can be a sign of ketosis from eating inadequate carbs and relying too much on fat for energy sources. Catabolic break down of muscle proteins for energy can also be caused by inadequate consumption of carbs.
Five mile run in our now warm weather. Oy, was I not ready for this.
H found a pool btw. Yay! He made contact with the guy in charge and they are expecting him. You did your good deed for the month, dmd.
Catching up on these posts made me think/feel spring - I think it’s sort of in the air!
CBB, hoping for the best for your brother. It seems it’s rare to not have a “C” incidence in any family. I know our family has been sadly touched. However, it is true that treatment is so available these days. My own brother had to go through some radiation and chemo - not saying it was easy but it was nothing like the terrible stories we have all heard - it was a low dose and he was able to keep working for the most part , didn’t lose his hair, etc. I hope the best for your family!
Just returned from Chicago and the Shamrock Shuffle! SOO fun! THANKFULLY, the weather was almost ideal. We did get there about 2.5 hours early (my friend is overly cautious!) so was a bit cold waiting but race time was probably 45-50 and no wind - in Chicago! WIN. The sun came out the last mile or so - I started getting warm but managed.
I don’t have an official time but I was pretty proud. As Deb mentioned, 8k’s are rare so you can easily get a PR! I ran the entire race without any walking except for a gulp of Gatorade at a beverage stop. Even ran the two “hills”. Time actually flew by and I felt good the entire race. Lots of people (approx 25K) so there felt no need to rush through. Plus the start is S-L-O-W with that many people! I think I ran about 54 mins for the nearly 5 miles. I will never claim or strive for fast. Really a fun time and I love my Nike Dri-fit women’s tshirt!
That sounds like it went really well, abasket! I have never raced in Chicago. I think my 5 years of living there and fighting the wind have scared me off. I’ve trained a lot there on business trips and my first “real” running steps started from the front of the UChicago Law School!
Congrats, abasket! I’m glad the weather worked out. I love getting a good shirt out of an event.
Congrats to all racers!
Thank you @BunsenBurner and @MichaelNKat - he doesn’t eat a lot of carbs. He is pretty careful about what he eats. I don’t think he eats enough calories for the exercise that he gets. His weight stays constant even with the amount of exercise he gets. He also has the annoying ability to not get fatigued or out of breath. He can out play volleyball players half his age. I’m going to see if I can get him to eat a bit more on days he plays singles in tennis.
May be he does not need to eat more calories, just a different mix of calories with slightly more carbs.
Bunsen hits the bullseye again! @mom60, you state “he doesn’t eat a lot of carbs. He is pretty careful about what he eats” and “His weight stays constant even with the amount of exercise he gets.” Those comments speak volumes. Basic law of thermogenics: eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight, eat less than you burn and you lose, eat in an energy balance and your weight remains constant. Your body really doesn’t care where those calories come from in terms of your weight. The ratio of your macronutrients is important, however, in terms of health. And how your body functions. There’s been lots of discussions upstream on this forum about this.
One of the ways this gets twisted up is with the notion that eating carbs is “bad” and inconsistent with eating “healthy”. This fad in diet and nutrition is based on well demonstrated “bad science” and has been thoroughly debunked. (There are those with diagnosed metabolic medical conditions, like diabetes, for whom carbs are a particular concern, but that’s outside the norm and the scope of this discussion.) The reality is that our bodies need carbs. We need 130 gms/day just for the proper functioning of our central nervous system. Carbs are the primary source of energy to fuel our activities. If we don’t eat enough carbs, during intense activities, our bodies will turn to lean muscle tissue to fuel our efforts in a process called catabolism and then we are fighting a battle to replace lost lean muscle tissue and to eat enough protein to do so. Eating carbs is not inconsistent with eating healthy. The question becomes the quality of the carbs. Avoiding added sugars and refined flours, eating nutrient dense carbs with a low glycemic load (different than glycemic index) is what matters. And then you want to balance the ratio of carbs in your nutritional planning with protein and healthy fat to have a well balanced diet that meets your energy needs.
So getting back to your original comment about your husband’s metallic odor, obviously no one can tell you definitively in an internet discussion what is causing it. But a cause of a metallic odor on a persons breath can be that they are in a state of ketosis caused by eating too few carbs and forcing your body to rely too heavily on fats for energy production throughout the day. Your comment about how your husband eats suggests that this could be a possible explanation, particularly given his activity levels. And as Bunsen suggested, increasing the amount of carbs in his diet without increasing total calories could be a solution.
Here’s a link to a really informative article on carbs in an athlete’s diet written by Mike Israetel, an associate professor at Temple University with a Phd in Excercise Physiology:

Hope this is helpful.
^ I found it helpful! Very informative, especially the part about carbs. Sweet potatoes, brown rice – those are some of the “good” carbs – maybe mom60’s husband could incorporate some carbs and see how he feels.
abasket – sounds like you had a great race! You felt good, had fun, and got the t-shirt!
This morning’s run was shorter than I had planned for (4 miles). Felt this weird pain near my belly button that I’ve had off and on. It’s always been mild but this time actually stopped and walked because of it. I think I’ll see my doc soon just to check it out.
Definitely get it checked out, Class!
Raining this morning so I got on the treadmill. I had extra time because I have an eye appt this morning and don’t have to leave the house as early. Managed 4.3 miles of watching boring weather and traffic (with occasional break for a news item). I don’t have cable channels on the treadmill room TV, so I’m limited…
Oh- got an absolutely gorgeous orange/coral-ish running skirt from Oiselle in the mail yesterday. It’s so pretty! The color is called Snap. Also, the Oiselle Lesko bra is a great basic running bra for those who don’t need major support. Just got my second one.
I ordered a pair of the Hoka recovery sandals yesterday - I like my Oofos slides but wanted to try something else. Plus, the colors are so pretty! I got the blue atoll/pink. My everyday work clothes may be boring but my workout clothes are not. Got to get through it somehow! http://www.hokaoneone.com/womens-recovery-sandals/ora-recovery-slide/1014865.html
TRX/mat yesterday - tough workout but I like it as we do some work with balance challenges. Cold this morning and my legs were tired but got out there for a bit over 6. Glad to have it done.
I’m ready for some spring wardrobe add-ins. Post a link to that skirt MOWC - seeing the bright springy colors just makes me feel good!
LOL sabaray. I forgot to post, but I ordered them, too! I got mine from Roadrunnersports with my discount. I am excited to get them.
