Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

3.3 miles before work- beautiful spring morning with clear skies. My husband is in Texas for a funeral, so I have to handle all the animals and do all the things he normally does and also get to work! Sure makes me appreciate him!

Echoing continued support for your brother, CBBBlinker. My ex had Stage IV cancer and had to go through surgery and radiation (for 5 weeks) but 20 years later is still cancer free. It was a very scary time though. Hoping his treatment and recovery follows the same path.

Bunsen – so glad she got the confirmation email! Vs starting to look all over again. And nice to have her nearby!

PlantMom – long time no see! At least your doctor sounds very on top of the bone situation. And you are doing all the right things.

Yesterday I had some errands to do during lunch. Didn’t realize how far apart they were. Ended up walking 40 blocks! In heels (only downside). I think I’ll keep some flats under my desk.

I got caught in a downpour last night while walking the dog. So of our 2.5 mile walk, the last mile was a full out sprint for home. I was in jeans and a raincoat, but at least I had an old pair of running shoes on! The dog ran that last mile with a 5 ft long stick in his mouth - no way was he going to give up his stick! He does love his sticks!

Bunsen - yay for the job confirmation for your daughter! When will she start work?

Classof 2015 - Yikes! Walking 4 mile in heels sound horrible! My feet would have been killing me! You should keep some old running shoes at your desk for when you do errands.

I am hoping to be able to get a short run in tonight but not sure what time I will get out of work.

^^I do this - have an old pair of running shoes always with me at work and/or in the car for opportunities to get out and walk.

Sorry for the rain C3B! Why is it that we are so fearful of getting wet?! Storms are one thing, rain alone is another!

Yep – feet were not happy. They were boots with a heel so not as bad as pumps but still – running shoes would have been better. And I think my 40 blocks (with breaks in between) were more like 2 miles but you’re right.

Glad to see you back, PlantMom.

The pups want to walk no matter what. I secretly think they just enjoy the towel massage they get when they come in.

Good Pilates workout this morning, scheduled some classes for the month. I’m trying to be better about planning workouts that complement each other. No pup walk this morning, Mr. Sabaray sprung into action this morning! Will wonders never cease!

Waving hello to @PlantMom!

50 minutes on the Cybex Arc + 11 minutes (1 mile) on the Octane Lateral. Pouring rain here; cold and (obviously) damp. The pup is at the groomer today, which usually tires her out, which is good since I’m not really up for a walk in the rain …

I have an appointment for a physical next week. I didn’t go last year – no real reason. It’s been a while since I’ve had a bone density test; it may be time. Also, I’ll look for a recommendation for a doc to deal with my ongoing gait issues – perhaps a sports medicine type?

Non weekend 5K. Best new hips pace yet, 10:20. Down from 10:45 last time I ran one. I was excited since my training has been meh. Maybe I can get to sub ten by summer.

CBB, a sports medicine or an ortho specializing in treating athletes would be a good first stop for gait problems. The doc who helped me with my knee issues was from a U-associated sports medicine clinic. She also was an adjunct at the U and - sadly! - retired from practice and went working full-time in some sort of admin function at that department. I got lots of good advice from those appointments. Also, a PT who was a marathoner helped me work on my specific gait issues.

I would like to join this thread if it’s OK! I have gotten way too heavy and I need to get myself back into shape. I’m starting a daily journal that will list my minutes running, minutes walking, total steps, everything I eat, and how I’m feeling. I’m going to set a realistic weight loss goal of 1 1/2 pounds a week. Exercising at least 6 days each week. I know I can do it! I lurk in this thread a lot, and you guys are very motivating.

Absolutely you can do it, ML! Great first steps. No need to ask permission! The more the merrier. The things you’ve gone through in the past years take their toll. I am sure the folks here will be glad to be your exercise and health support group.

Congrats lizardly on that pace! Glad the new hips are doing good!

Welcome MaineLonghorn! Lots of good advice and support here. I think many have recommended MyFitnessPal to track calories if you want to use an app.

We know you can do it too, ML! I am focusing on a lot of the same things you are, it will be great to have you here!

Welcome to the group from which I haven’t been banned!

Yeah to new participater ML!!!

C3B–H and I did go to the Red Sox opener yesterday. You missed a good game!

I went to the gym early and did 60 minutes on the Cybex arc. We parked a few miles from Fenway, so I got my steps in as well. Today I went to slow flow yoga. I had planned on walking, but it’s been raining all day.

Welcome to the thread MaineLonghorn.

I had hoped to run outside today. It’s 50, WINDY (like crazy windy) and gloomy. I am SO over gloomy! I’m wishing I had brought gym stuff with me. Time will tell if I get the run in when I get home, or if I head to the gym…or what?

Make good on my promise above…got home and did a 30 minute weights + squats/lunges/push ups workout video - it’s effective!!! I really need to keep up with this type of workout. Polished it off with a 1.5 mile run outside. I had on shorts for the inside workout so just ventured out for the run with them. It was cold, windy and gloomy - I’m sure the neighbors were thinking I was a crazy lady out there running in the conditions AND in shorts!

Was crazy windy! I clerked our HS track meet tonight and I thought the wind was going to blow the runners back on the one straightaway. Got over 20,000 steps for the entire meet.

@MaineLonghorn, welcome to our merry band. Some practical suggestions if I may:

  1. A goal of 1 1/2 lb per week is reasonable as long as you are not feeling deprived and are eating enough to fuel your activities. Look at your nutritional plan more in terms of making lifestyle changes that will be sustainable rather than as a "diet" until you hit your target weight.
  2. When you put yourself in a calorie deficit, your body is not all that discriminate about where weight loss comes from. You will lose it from both adipose tissue and lean muscle tissue. It's important to incorporate some form of resistence training in your exercise program to help maintain and even grow lean muscle tissue. One of your goals should be to change you body composition percentages, not just to lose weight. For your health and ability to enjoy your activities, you don't want to be a "fat skinny person".
  3. Working out 6 days per week is great but don't fail to give yourself at least a day off per week to recover from all your efforts. Recovery time is as important as your exercise time to enable your body to rebuild and restore itself. Hard working out creates lots of stresses and you need guiltless downtime. You also need to recharge your mental batteries so you don't burn out.
  4. MyFitnessPal is a great program for logging food, one of the best, and its data base is the best I've ever used. Do not, however, rely on it for determining calorie burn from exercise. It's not particularly accurate at that (none of the logging programs really are) and there is a great risk that you will overestimate your calorie burn which if used to adjust your meal plans will result in overeating and frustrating your weight loss. I ignore what MFP says my exercise calorie burn is and do not adjust my caloric intake based on it. Instead, I simply set up my profile, including my activity level from the menu suggestions, and let MFP calculate my daily caloric needs. Keep in mind that MFP and all the logging programs use formulas that are ball park estimations. You will need to play around with the caloric targets to dial them in on your individualized basis. MFP's calculation is a good place to start.

Enjoy the toad you are embarking on. You will feel great as a result of your efforts.
