Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

@ohiopublic — when we’ve shipped bikes, we’ve done it by getting it disassembled at one bike shop, shipped by the cheapest slowest method (slow UPS, usually), then reassembled at the arrival bike shop. However, there are a lot of rental bike shops in Tucson and you might find it easiest to rent a bike there.

The shipping problem is why my bike has S&S couplers. I love being able to put it in a standard 26x26x12 suitcase.

Utterly unrelated to bikes:
I have joined a boot-camp-trail-running group and the first day was this morning at 6:30, so I showed up, did the warmups and the exercises and the 2.5 mile uphill/downhill run, then came home and ran another 5 miles with the dog… all before breakfast. So that felt very virtuous.

HOWEVER, when I finished running, I realized that the every-ten-days long run is just not getting any easier or any faster (even though I’m increasing distance very slowly), and I can feel every single muscle around that left knee (the one I think of as “my surgical knee” because it’s the one where I had the bone cancer removed almost ten years ago, which required cutting into a lot of muscles, even though the doctor did it pretty carefully)… so I decided to scratch out of my half marathon scheduled for the end of May. I was astonished by how relieved I felt by making the decision! I have a trail series scheduled with distances up to 7 miles, and that I’m very comfortable with, so I’m going to stick to the 5Ks and 10Ks for this year.

Garmin vs Fitbit Flex
Interestingly, this morning I put on my Garmin 235 and the Fitbit Flex at the same time (normally I only use the Garmin for running). Steps: 19126 on the Flex, 19162 on the Garmin, which is functionally equivalent.

ohio, ditto what dmd77 said about renting. Depending on how long you are going to be away and cost analysis, you may find it much more convenient and less expensive to just rent from a local shop that has performance road bikes available. I’m about as fussy as it comes about the bikes I ride to train but every time we travel by air, I rent a bike locally at our destination. Between the time and hassle of disassembling, packing, shipping, receiving at the other end, reassembling and then doing it again for the return , it’s just so much easier to rent. If I were traveling to a race or a long event, I would want to be on my own bike but otherwise, what I’ve found in local shops has been more than adequate for training.

dmd77 – that sounds like a wise decision. Smart to pay attention to your knee. And what a morning workout before breakfast!

Interesting DMD on those step counts. Sometimes I wonder if the counts are more similar when the movement being measured is steady movement - like walking, running, etc. - as opposed to just steps throughout your day - when thinks like brushing your teeth, clapping, etc. sometimes get counted as steps.

Went to the gym today and did a long workout–30 minutes on the treadmill (fast walking at a 12-13 minute mile pace), 30 minutes on the Cybdex Arc, and 30 minutes on a regular elliptical. Figure I needed to burn a bunch of calories because I’m going to a cooking class tonight on making Chinese Wontons. It’s at a local kitchen shop and the instructor is the owner of a great Chinese restaurant.

Great workout, Bromfield. We need a report on those wontons.

Today did not end on a great note. Sabadog had a vet visit, which was fine, just his annual checkup. The pups enjoy a walk after their dinner and as we headed out, our neighbor’s small snarling dog came charging across the street at us. I was walking down our embankment and as my dogs went into “protect Mom” mode, I slid and fell hard on my hip and wrenched my back. I am not happy right now. I am even less happy that said neighbor didn’t even apologize - he seemed more concerned with reassuring his daughter that MY dogs wouldn’t hurt their little beast. Grumble. Time for some Advil.

Nice workouts everybody! Keep it up MaineLH! Very nice run, Sabaray, but ouch to the evening slide down. Why can’t people just be nice? :frowning: . Our neighbor has a small, snarler that also barks a yip, yip, yip we can hear whenever he’s out. Grumble, indeed. Hope you’re better tomorrow.

I ran (with walk intervals in the Galloway method) 4.5 miles this morning. I also added some upper body weight exercises, thinking about my poor bones. The run–although it was almost 80 degrees–felt slow but alright enough. I walked with my DH this evening, however, and one of my knees was bothering me.

Ouch, sabaray, that stinks. I hate it when people don’t take responsibility for the behavior of their pets. Hope you feel better.

Sabaray- that is terrible! I would be furious! I can’t believe that you fell right in front of him and he didn’t even apologize. Ugh. Take a hot bath and maybe some wine…

Exactly what MK said. You wish you could take back those couple of seconds of the slip and fall…hope it’s a temporary hurt and that the Advil kicks in. Stupid neighbor.

What a jerk of a neighbor! Take it easy for the next couple of days, and treat your sore back with that glass of wine Michael suggested. Just make sure Advil has cleared your stomach first…

Hope you are feeling better today sabaray. BTW - how is your D doing?

Well, we were up bright and early to get our walk in between the big storms that are rolling through today. H is super busy at work this month so he headed off early and the pups and I got in our usual walk. Little stiffer and slower than normal, but they were fine with that - gave them extra “sniff” time! I have a mat class scheduled over lunch, so that will help my back.

D is okay, FallGirl, thanks for asking. Her MRI showed some spinal scoliosis and some possible SI joint involvement. For now, she is seeing a PT at a Pilates studio and taking diclofenac(sp?) - an anti-inflammatory- as well as Skelaxin. I’m hoping she continues with the Pilates - I really think it’s helpful. Any twisting type of motion is always going to be an issue for her.

Sabaray that sounds like you fell hard! Ouch! First thing the neighbor should have done was come over and help you up at least. Hope your D gains mobility and strength.

Skip day for me but had a really nice dinner last night with fiancé and future Step D. I’m trying to be the “low impact” step mom here to her and her sister (they lost their mom about 3 years ago). I always set a place for them when I make dinner for me and fiance. I fold their laundry when it’s done and bring it up. We had a simple dinner last night and a nice chat. Every time I think about their loss I tear up.

I hope I copied it right. Not sure if it can be used by multiple people- but maybe.

Classof2015- That’s really tough. You sound like you are doing it right. Good luck!

Glad to hear that you could do the pup walk, sabaray. Mr. B broke a rib while chasing after our dog… so I kept my fingers crossed for you. It sounds like your bones are OK. Phew. Stupid neighbor.

Here is a take on best running shoes - per Women’s Running:

Thanks MOWC – appreciate you saying that – yes – very tough. Tough for them – tough to see another woman in their house. I think they are slowly warming up to me but I feel so bad for them.

Long, fast walk this morning with the pup before the latest intense rainstorm rolled in. All the weather folks are saying this will end/nearly end last summer’s drought, which is good, but I am SO ready for lots of warm, dry days!

Drove out to my hometown yesterday to visit B. He’s lost weight, and he hadn’t been carrying around a lot extra. But he’s eating better now than when he first came home from the hospital. He and SIL are pretty annoyed with the hospital where he had the surgery – apparently it was easier to get the appointment for the actual surgery than it is to get follow-up appointments. B has a couple more tubes and a drain that have been ready to come out, but they couldn’t get an appointment until next Monday. B wants to get out and play golf, but finally realizes it may still take a while before he’s ready.

Two yoga classes today–vinayasa flow and then coffee at a local coffee shop,
followed by a gentle yoga class.

I loved the wonton class–I became very proficient folding them and went home with a bunch of shrimp wontons that I will use to make wonton soup. Instructor was excellent. I bought her book…

Sabaray–good luck to your D. Hope she recovers quickly. Also–hope your back is OK.
