For years I had no problems with my feet while running. I’d go to a big box sporting goods store, try on a bunch of shoes and buy the pair that felt the best. More recently my toes, especially on my left foot, started getting trashed. I went to a local running store to be “fitted” for shoes – was told I should be wearing 1/2 size larger. Left with some model of Brooks, which were fine. The next pair (Asics I think) started off OK, but then my toes started bothering. Another pair of Brooks, and currently Hokas. The last couple of pairs I’ve needed to use the lace lock on my right shoe to prevent heel lift. The toes on my left foot are still getting trashed, though. Just yesterday I had the idea to use the lace lock on my left shoe, too. I didn’t pull the laces across my lower foot overly tight, and then snugged them up a little more at the top. I’m wondering if my feet move around in the shoes just enough to trash the toes, if that makes sense?
$160 is a lot. I normally get my Hokas for about $120 or less, but not these! The toe box is pretty narrow. Glad you could send them back.
Classof2015- I would take a look at Topo UltraFly. Nice wide toe box.
3.3 miles this morning. Holy humidity! One of my staff guys brought a great specialty cake from St. Louis. It’s sort of a gooey, cheesy coffee cake and, boy, is it good. Small bites…
My top runner from the company ran a 3:08 at Boston. He’s the fastest of all the folks I tracked. My 75 year old friend usually places in his age group and had a terrible race and did a 4:53 or something. That’s unheard of for him. He posted that he wasn’t ready to talk about it yet. He was 14th in the age group. It was a tough day.
Thanks to all your condolences for my sweet dog. We will miss her a lot. We hit the lottery with her. I think I will get another dog at some point, but am not ready to contemplate it yet. It wouldn’t be fair to another dog when we are still so raw over Kira. I do need a walking buddy, however.
CD, hugs. Every time I see your avatar, it brings a smile to my face. I still can’t get over losing our sweet Charlie. He melted a hole in my heart. Cats, too. I would have had a hard time trying to get another kitty, but kiddo solved the problem for me - we lucked out with the kittes my kid found by the dumpster in the foreign country where she lived for 2 years. They are amazing.
Our best friends lost their dog in the fall - he was such a jem he was the inspiration for us to get our first pet, our dog Charlie. They were like “brothers from another mother”. They knew they needed to wait a bit but figured they would eventually get another dog. A couple weeks ago we visited them in Chicago with Charlie. Having Charlie around made them realize it was time for a pup again. Last week they adopted Cooper.
Purposeful walk at lunchtime - great way to rack up another mile or so and some good hearty steps!
A young man who was on my son’s HS track and XC team (he must be about 23 now) ran Boston in 2:51. He was a good runner in high school, but not outstanding. He went on to have an excellent college career at Colby.
I have been getting at least 14,000 steps a day in since Friday. That is my goal. Some days, I run 30 minute slowly. Other days, I run a minute (faster) then walk a minute for about 2 1/2 miles. Other days, I just walk. So far, the weight is not exactly falling off, ha. But I will be patient.
CD, I am so sorry. I can see waiting and grieving.
Swim and run. I woke up and my knee felt great. Time to go trash it again! No seriously, I swam an IM workout, but skipped the breaststroke kick out of respect to the knee. Ran an easy, flat three miles in the neighborhood, listening to my knee to see if it complained. It was quiet. I will ice it, though, and the hip, too.
Took my road bike to be serviced. It has been sitting in the garage the last four years while my hips were deteriorating and then getting better. My plan is to ride it on the trainer for a while and see if I can get in that aggressive position. If no, I talked to the bike store guy about ways to modify the bike or even get a new bike.
I’m sure Michael can help you find a new bike, Lizardly! He’s very good at helping others spend their money.
CD, you will know when the time for a new family member is right. My backsliding started when my beloved Lab died very quickly and very unexpectedly - no walking partner and when I walked alone, people asked me where he was and I was literally crying every time I saw someone. Not good! “Mr. Big” left such a big hole in my heart I needed two pups and I still miss him. I had to wake my two at lunchtime for their quick circuit workout - they are exhausted from their vacation!
CD- It is so hard. They steal our hearts. I’ll never forget the first cat I lost. I can still feel the pain. Over the years, there have been many more, and it’s still horrible, but that first one was unbearable!
Now I’m tearing up over the loss of our first pup in 2013. Brain tumor; no treatment possible. In some ways it’s good that our 2nd (current) pup is so different, in spite of being the same breed. (She’s just plain wacky!)
@MaineLonghorn - Colby alum here! Always like to hear about a fellow Mule.
@Lizardly, if you are going to use your bike extensively on a rear wheel mounted trainer and not ride it outside for a while, you may want to consider putting an indoor trainer tire (yes, there are such things) on the rear wheel. The roller on an indoor trainer will exponentially accelerate the wear on a regular outdoor tire. The special rubber compound on an indoor trainer tire is much more durable but you absolutely must swap back to your regular tire before riding outside. And as to spending your money on a new bike, yes, I can absolutely help with that!
Classof2015- Altra and Topo have the wide toe boxes and are very low drop. The low drop can be a little bit of an adjustment, but I like it. I think Topo might be a little better fit than Altra, although I like both.
@abasket Did I ask you this already? What ever happened with the FitBit that you found?
Just printed off a shipping label today that Fitbit sent me - they said if I sent it in they should be able to reunite with it’s owner. I was happy to hear that because when I lost mine (or thought I did!) I was hoping someone who find it would take the time to do that for mine!
A speedy-for-me 3 miles tonight. It was a perfect running night!
2 miles this morning. This afternoon is the dreaded company 5K. The race timing company (don’t get me started on the one we use…) neglected to contact the police in time and the permit was denied, so we can’t cross any streets- not even in a quiet neighborhood with our 100 person run/walk. So- we have to wind around the little park and our campus and hope to not get run over by non-participants blowing out of the parking garage at 4:30! I appreciate what the company does for us, but this is certainly not a “goal” event for me, and expectations tend to be a little high for me. I just run through it, but since they think I’m an Olympian or something, I get asked a lot about my time. The course is never even close to right and it’s going to be 80 degrees- that is, if there aren’t severe thunderstorms. Maybe I can hope for lightening!
MOWC that’s a bummer - if you’re going to do it, do it right - right?! Hope you stay dry and as I often tell my mind when I’m heading out and am less than enthusiastic…in 30 minutes it will all be over.
Have 5 hours in the car this afternoon to Columbus and back so have been frantically walking everywhere this morning to try and get close to my step quota. Hopefully some walking on D2’s college campus will help! Halfway to my minimum daily total before 11am.
