Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

@busdriver11 - Katherine Switzer appears in the Boston Marathon documentary. What an inspiring woman. They also included footage of an interview from that time, where a man states that women can only run maybe 2 miles. The theater (full of women marathoners & half-marathoners) went a little crazy at that point!!

Bill Rodgers, Amby Burfoot, Shalayne Flanagan are also given a lot of time, along with lot of past winners. Good stuff!

I am doing the La Jolla Half this weekend. It includes a 440 foot elevation gain in less than a mile. It looks almost vertical on the elevation map. I plan to walk (or crawl if necessary) for that portion.

It’s going to be tough to beat the beauty of a run in La Jolla this weekend - say hello to the seals at the shore for me!

I’m jealous of the REI garage sale! I love a good place to pick for a bargain!

5.2 beautiful, flat miles in Naples. I was pressed for time, so didn’t check on how the beach would be for running. I’ve heard it isn’t so great. I’ll walk later. Trying to figure out a route for Sunday for 10-12 miles. Had to use my headlamp this morning for the first 30 minutes.

You get to run in some nice places, MOWC. Changing scenery every time.

I’m going to have to watch that Boston Marathon documentary!

I want to see that documentary, too.

" Women can run maybe 2 miles" LOL.

That said I only ran 1.25 this AM because it started to rain and I did not want my new phone getting wet. Tomorrow’s training walk is 22 miles so I think I’ll make it up.

Weather is not my friend this weekend - looks like steady rain throughout. Your weather looks a bit better, FallGirl - I should come up there to run! Race is next weekend - certainly won’t be as pretty as Gertrude’s - so I don’t think I need a lot of miles tomorrow. I had planned to do 7 or 8 - others in my group want to do “at least ten”. I’ve been running 10 to 11 miles consistently but want to give myself a bit of a taper. What do you all think?

I vote for taper! Especially if the weather is awful.

MoWC, how many states have you run in? I’m a new runner (compared to you!) but I just counted and I’ve run in at least 18 states, plus DC and Puerto Rico. Obviously I travel a lot – but I just impressed myself that it’s that many.

About two weeks ago I had a bad fall on a run, and the only thing I hurt was the front of my right shoulder (not really sure how I managed that). A few days later I went swimming, and boy, was that a mistake since I re-damaged it. So I stopped swimming and lifting weights. When I did yoga on Wednesday, I discovered that it’s still sore, so I’m still avoiding swimming and weights. Grr.

busdriver – thanks for that article – boy she endured a lot! re: hiking – we used to climb Mt Washington which is the highest peak in the northeast and I wore real hiking boots but lots of people had grippy sneakers. Poles should help. It sounds like fun!

Another vote for taper, Sabaray. You’ve been doing lots of long runs (and getting up at 4 am to do them!).

Light rain and fog here. Weather app on my phone said thunderstorms were coming so I got out and did 7 miles, but now it’s actually clearing.

7-8 is plenty, sabaray.

I’m not sure about how many states I’ve run in. I’ve run in most every state I’ve been in- maybe not Delaware. I’ve never been in either Dakota or Alaska and haven’t run in Nebraska. I’ve run in France, Switzerland, Mexico, Canada, Honduras, England.

It looks like all of you are going to be very busy this weekend! Have fun and stay intact.

Busy weekend ahead for me as well. We are gong full war on bramble on our new property at House2 and get grass reseeded at House1. Mr B ordered a Li battery-powered chainsaw… He already has a gas one and an electric one. Ugh. I came to House2 last night and discovered that he took down some ugly maple trees that were growing too close to the house. We had a little talk about how a dude should not be climbing trees with chainsaws and the like when there is no one around!

4 mile run.

Yesterday I was starting to feel bit of the “I don’t want to exercise” blues coming on. (I didn’t go to the gym, but did make my step goal.) So, when I returned from some errands in the afternoon, I parked on the side of our street that was scheduled for street cleaning today. On those days, all cars must be cleared by 8:00 AM or you’ll be towed. Sure enough, I really wasn’t feeling the exercise love this morning, but I had to move my car. Once I got out the door and into the car, I was fine with just driving to the gym. As a funny aside – when I was stretching post-run, I saw a neighbor. (I know she belongs to my gym, but I hardly ever cross paths with her.) She mentioned how she almost didn’t come this morning, but she had to go out to move her car due to street cleaning, so …)

The above mentioned errands included shopping for a bathing suit, which is usually somewhat traumatic, at least for me. I actually found 2, and the trauma was lessened by the 30% off sale going on!

Gertrude - I am so glad to hear that your new job is going well. What a relief to have a meaningful job with a steady paycheck and benefits. Good luck in your race - sounds like gorgeous scenery!

sabaray - I definitely vote for a taper. There’s no reason to be doing 10 miles the week before a half. With the long runs you have been doing on a consistent basis, you have the mileage and endurance built up already. There’s nothing to be gained by running 10 miles in the rain at this point.

busdriver - I can’t offer much help on the footwear selection, just passing along my good wishes for an awesome hike - definitely one that I hope to do someday. Personally, I would go for the hiking boots to have the ankle support.

I’m running a half tomorrow morning, this is the race that I registered to do the full and then downgraded when I got burned out during training. I have been having a lot of regrets about that this week, but looking at all the rain and wind in tomorrow morning’s forecast, I’m a little relieved to only be doing the half. Still feel like a slacker, though!

Thanks everyone. I don’t know why I can’t just have confidence in my training! I’m running better than I have in a long time. I’m just feeling very tired, I want to get this race over with.

I think it’s okay to be a “slacker” once in a while, @C3Baker. Mr. Sabaray always asks me what I ran each day and I often tell him “only 6” - he’s very quick to remind me that’s a long way to a lot of people. We have a popular July 4th race that I am actually going to train for - 5k or 10k options. I’ll need some suggestions on how best to do that.

Bunsen- that’s a lot of chainsaws! Agree with your safety lecture!

Chainsaws freak me out because my dad had a bad accident with one. He was fortunate that it did not get to the bone!!! Mr. is usually paranoid about safety, but for some reason taking down trees does not count as a dangerous activity. 8-|

Mr. B needs to be careful!!!

I keep track of states that I run in. I’ve run 12 states and three countries (US, Canada, France). I thought it would be more than 12 but alas that is what it is. As far west as California and Oregon, as far east as Massachusetts, southern most is only Kentucky I think! So that covers the last 4 years.

Good luck to all running races tomorrow!

For me, Friday/Saturday, it’s the CrossFit “Masters Qualifier” events and then on Sunday open gym at the local indoor/outdoor obstacle course. Lots of fun!

Ugh, anyone considering going to the REI garagage sale, don’t bother. High prices for used stuff. This is not like the old days. Now a long line (because they only have four cashiers) to buy the meager used items I’m getting. Thinking of giving up. Worthless!
