I’ve never had much luck with those used/markdown sales, so personally I don’t bother.
REI garage sales used to be fantastic. Practically new backpacks, boots, jackets worth hundreds…for $20. They marked the prices up by 4-5 times of what they used to be.
That’s frustrating @busdriver11
Ran 2.5 miles today in a misty rain. It was cool, about 40. I was pretty comfortable running. The weather is suppose to be better this weekend.
I’ve spent most of the week visiting friends in Annapolis; I tagged along while my H was at a business meeting in DC. We drove home yesterday and got back in time for me to go to slow flow yoga. I did another yoga class (all-levels vinyasa) today at noon. While in Annapolis, I went to a reformer class with my friend and we did two walks (4 miles each day).
Good luck on your training walk, Fallgirl. Sabaray–have a great race. Agree with you on the chainsaw, BB.
Bus: don’t know if you’re still looking for hiking boots. I like Merrell, Salomon, and Vasque brands. I’ve done a fair amount of hiking and backpacking and those brands are quite good. You just need to try on boots and see what fits.
OK Fitbit folks. I did the “bike ride activity” this afternoon at this conference in Naples. We were on cruisers, and, frankly, it was more of a workout than these things usually are. The guide didn’t stop very often and didn’t tell us much about Naples. Usually these things are more about touring the area and a lot less about pedaling. I was fine, but my sit bones are sore. It was approaching strenuous for some of the folks, though. It did give me a preview of where I will run on Sunday, though.
My question- I thought I was going to miss a few hours of steps since I was on the bike with my hands on the handlebars, but it recorded steps and all my hours are marked! How did it figure that out?
Even though you think you are holding your arms still, there are still micro-accelerations as your feet work the pedals. The chip in the fitbit can detect this and pattern-match the readings to typical bike activity, so it knows you are active during this time…
My fitbit (Charge 2) has a biking mode so it knows you are biking and doesn’t have to guess. I’m guessing the calorie-burning and distance algorithms (if you are not synced to the GPS in your phone) are probably different in “bike” mode than “walk” or “run” mode, but I haven’t really experimented with this.
NRE is likely correct. Slow biking registers as a walk on Mr. B Charge.
I saw a really cool thing today - SUP boards with a steering column and stepper pedals to propel the board. Wow.
I’m not sure what motions the Fitbit looks at to determine you’re cycling. I had an hour-long dog agility training session–which usually registers as “sport”–come up recently as “outdoor cycling.” Cracked me up. I had tucked the Fitbit band into the side pocket of my pants, so that may have affected it.
Went for a trail run/hike (the terrain was pretty challenging) that came up on my Fitbit Flex2 as: walk, sport, walk, run for different parts of the trail. I think “sport” included the part where I slid downhill ten feet on my rear (not intentionally) and ended up with mud everywhere.
Came home from the trail run, washed the dogs (one of whom was filthy (see above mentioned slide downhill)), and then spent two hours grooming them. Then sat down to eat lunch … and am currently having a hard time standing back up–lots of sore muscles.
My guess MOWC is you were working pretty hard on the bike - it wasn’t just a “glide along” ride - so yes, you probably had enough movement of your upper body to make it count. Embrace it!!
3 mile run. Cold. 54. I prefer at least 65 these days.
This weekend I’m volunteering both days for our local marathon (Glass City). Tomorrow I’m helping set up the stadium area where runners finish (hanging medals, etc.). Sunday I’ll actually be a course marshall and am positioned at about the last mile mark (so 12 for the half, 25 for the full). For those of you that have done those kind of races (my best is a 10K) what kind of words of encouragement/cheering do you want to hear at that point with one mile to go??? I don’t want to tick anyone off!!! But cheerleading is part of the job.
I’m really looking forward to it! And might as well check out the expo when I’m there tomorrow!!!
This is the SUP I saw today! What is next - walking on water? ![]()

Wow, I NEED one of those for the lake!!! I also NEED $2500!!!
The Garmin 235 unfortunately doesn’t record steps on the bike. I have to wear in my shoe.
Tiki bar got in the way of running today.
See all these retirement villas in Florida with the focus on golf/tennis. Doesn’t cut it for me!
I haven’t seen one yet that fulfills my needs. One that has a 400 meter track, full fitness facility, AlterG, velodrome, mountain bike path, hills (for repeats) cryotherapy, running trails, etc.
^^Sounds like you need to develop a alternative resort community Ohio!!
@abasket - good for you, volunteering to cheer the runners on! For me, I didn’t pay attention to what they said as much as who said it. Like I could tell if it was a runner cheering me on. During my one and only half, a woman (who looked like a runner) said “looking good” at Mile 7. That helped.
Whereas in the marathon, i heard a non runner say “you got this” at Mile 1 and I’m like really? With 25.2 miles to go?
I wasn’t working that hard on the bike. Remember- this was a group of 20 on flat, flat roads/paths and some were in jeans or other “not for Florida” clothing. These were totally cruiser bikes. I’m glad I got credit for the steps!
Enjoy the marathon volunteering! Get good swag!
Ohio- what’s the market for something like that? (Your retirement resort).
Bunsen- that looks awesome. My sister needs that for the Poconos lake. I want her to at least get a regular SUP. Their lake would be perfect!
It’s been sort of a strange day. There were some big fires along Alligator Alley (I 75 between Ft. Lauderdale and Naples) and the sky was smoke covered and ashes were raining down. The ashes got in our food at lunch (outdoors). The bellmen were wearing masks! I was a little concerned about biking in that, and my eyes were stinging a little. It seemed like we biked out of it, and it had mostly cleared by this evening. My sister is 30 miles north of here and they had clear skies.
Group dinner on the beach was gorgeous. All dressed up with bare feet in the sand!
There is a rental place in the park where we went for lunch. I am tempted to try it - but not in April!! Falling in the lake is not fun when the water is so cold.
Florida is in a pretty severe drought, there are something like 80 active wildfires right now.
There’s a whole bunch of discussion on the Fitbit forums about false step readings from cycling. From what I can glean, the Fitbit design is not intended to purposefully convert cycling activity to steps and does not do so accurately. It’s described as a design artifact. I’ve observed the same artifact with my cycling training partner who wears a Fitbit. See:

The most logical explanation I’ve seen of the phenomenon of Fitbit measuring steps on a bike ride is that it detects arm movements from bumps and from turning the handlebars.
SUP’s are so much fun -and can be a great whole body and cardio workout too. Arms, shoulders, back, legs, core, proprioception and balance control. My friends have inflatable boards. Easy to transport and inflate and functionally work as well as a rigid board.
There’s a new event in our area - a triathlon that substitutes the SUP for swimming. You can do it as part of a team or individually. I’d like to try the SUP - but don’t think the best time is during a timed event!
Got in 8 miles this morning. Was raining for a bit when we first started but was dry most of the way. I felt pretty good after so headed to a Reformer class. It was a smaller group of us and we were all more advanced so spent some time doing more challenging exercises. Stretched at the end, now I’m ready for a nap.
Went to volunteer for the race set-up for tomorrow. The area I was suppose to help was manned by a totally incompetent man (sorry guys!) who I have a feeling doesn’t think too highly of woman. Besides myself there was another woman my age who was volunteering - she is a nurse. The guy said that we would probably be good at supervising some teens who would be coming to help - because, you know, we were woman. And he asked her if she was an OB nurse, because, you know, she was a woman (loved when she told him “no, trauma ER nurse” (shove it buddy). Anyway, he was pretty disorganized so after an hour and a half of doing almost nothing, I punted the station. If I am volunteering, PLEASE PUT ME TO WORK!!! Tomorrow will be a better experience during the race I’m sure.
ANYWAY…headed over to the expo where I raked in some good things. Besides the freebie stuff like sunscreen, pens, chapstick, etc. …bought a 1/4 zip I love from our local running club I belong to, a pair of Saucony shorts with a fun print (I like them cause they are just a TAD longer), some Bondi headbands (anyone use these??) and then picked up a STEAL since I was technically in the expo before it opened… a NIKE full zip jacket with the running club logo on it for my son - $5! Best thing in the $5 pile! And to add to that for a b-day gift for him next month, 2 free tshirts including one drifit.
Those expos can be dangerous. Also picked up a 1/4 zip to send to my Chicago friend who is always so generous buying goodies for me at her races. Share the love.
