Good job, abasket! I like those Bondi hair bands but do t have enough hair for them!

My hair is short like yours, but very thick and in the summer a curly mess - bought one for my D1’s long, thick, curly/wavy mass of hair too!

abasket, that sucks about the volunteering today! Sorry that happened. I really need to start volunteering at some of the races that I don’t participate in. As for what to say, today I did my half. I was really feeling it the last ~5 miles. About a quarter mile before mile 12, and woman very calmly looked at me and said, “There’s just over a mile left, and in just a bit you have a nice downhill part. I know you can do this.” I just love it. I have no idea who these people are, but omg can these strangers get me through some tough parts on the course! Personally, I don’t love the “you’re almost there” unless I can see the finish line. I appreciate it, I just sometimes want to be there and not almost there! I especially enjoy things like “finish strong,” “you’re doing great,” “you’re doing it!!!”, things like that. When I did my marathon, just having someone beside me giving me words of encouragement meant everything, regardless of what was said (EXCEPT for “run faster” ~X( I was giving it everything and that just made me feel awful, even though I know that’s not the intent). I hope you have fun tomorrow!

As you can read from my posts, I was very undertrained. Add in that I stayed with someone else who was doing it (who lives 15 minutes from the start line), and she had yet to turn on her air. It was over 80 degrees in that house! I finally mentioned something before going to bed because it seemed to actually be getting warmer. Finally turned on the air, but it didn’t do much. So then I was so hot I got no sleep. In the morning, I checked the weather one last time to see it was already 70 degrees at 6 am, with 90 % humidity. Great. Luckily it rained some, and that cooled it down.

The best part was that but the time I got to the line, I knew it was going to be an awful race. I did have a realistic time goal, and I ended up beating it by five minutes and seven seconds. So, it ended well and once I got going I really did enjoy the race. I was able to keep up the positive self-talk and finished as strong as I could given everything that lead up to it.

Phew, that was long!!

Good job, nahnah! That’s a lot to beat your estimate by!

Nahnah, it’s in the books and you got a good time under not the best circumstances - win, win!! I bow to anyone who does a race with that many miles! Now, take some rest time.

They actually mentioned “you’re almost there!” as one of the things NOT to say to any runner! And you’re right, a mile after 12 or 25 can still be a lifetime away.

abasket that guy would have seriously annoyed me. At least you got some great buys at the expo!

Good job nahnah - especially given a bad nights sleep.

Sabaray - way to go with the 8 miles! I thought we all voted to taper

Just got back from a 10 mile run. Easy pace. Felt good. 50 degrees and light rain. I prefer that to hot and humid.

@nahnah12 - At one of my halfs, some of the run club coaches were cheering runners on at about mile 12. I walked by (in my team shirt) & got the comment “You didn’t make it this far to walk!” I’ll forgive the coach that said it, cuz he is a very nice guy & thought he was being inspiring, but that one was deflating. I’m a run-walker anyway, & to be still propelling myself forward at mile 12 is something to be celebrated in my mind! Of course, now I run whenever I see a coach or a camera no matter how I actually feel!

Got my steps in today at the March for Science. I would describe the general mood as passionate, but introverted. DH and I fit right in!

Good job nahnah!

Awesome that you volunteered for the race, abasket and that you marched for science gertrude.

So I did my 20 mile walk (the group I walked with skipped a 2 mile loop at the end). It was chilly and rainy and we were wet and cold.but we did it. It was actually fun at times, at least meeting more team members and talking to them was. I did plan ahead and had a towel, extra T and sweatshirt in my car so I stripped down to my sports bra in the garage (at that point I really didn’t care who saw me) and put on warm , dry clothes. Also glad I brought 4 extra pair of socks. At one point my group stopped in a downtown hotel to use bathrooms and were sitting in the lobby changing wet socks and applying BodyGlide when the elevator opened and a bride and her bridesmaids got out. Of course they looked gorgeous and we did not and we were tending to our feet. Oh, well…

Hopefully it will not rain in two weeks for the real event, but if t does we know we’ve got it

You totally have it, @FallGirl ! I’m so proud of you and happy for you! You were totally prepared for the conditions. Great job.

Love hearing about your training @FallGirl. Sounds like a really fun group of people. I was telling someone about your walk today - with pride!!!

FallGirl- Terriffic. I’m proud of you, too. You’ll do great in 2 weeks.

We had a lot of rain this afternoon here in Naples, but we got our boat ride in and walked on a beach before it started. I was worried about my attempt at 12 miles because there was rain forecasted for the morning, but now that is out of the forecast. It’s going to be really humid.

Nice work, FallGirl!

Great work, FG. Long walks in the rain are really miserable. I’ve done it.

Spent the Earth Day getting rid of a chunk of the backyard lawn and planting perennials. Tomorrow with be the real earth day - Mr. will be fetching topsoil, and I will be spreading it in the backyard to reseed the lawn.

Thanks everyone, you know I will be thinking of all of you during the walk .

And I woke up this morning and am not a bit sore which is a bonus.

Well, I’m tougher than I thought! When I woke up (too early- in the dark) and checked Weather Bug, there was a 100% chance of rain storms during my entire run window. I checked about 4 different weather sites and it wasn’t looking good. Here I am in Florida and they are getting desperately needed rain, but what about my run? I decided I might have to do 5 miles on the treadmill and call it a day.

Then I decided that the rain wasn’t here yet, so I would head out and try to get some miles in. I didn’t take my water handheld since I didn’t think I was going very far. It was 100% humidity. I headed out and got to 4 miles and that meant I had at least 8. I drank out of someone’s sprinkler. At 9 miles I saw a sign that said “Pelican Bay Community Center- MEMBERS ONLY”. To me, that meant “Come get a drink at our tennis court water fountain!” I lucked out and there was an ice machine, cold water dispenser and cups! Thank you Pelican Bay!

I got back to the Ritz driveway at 10 miles and was going to call it since it had been lightly raining for the last mile. But I had planned to do 12, so off I went in the other direction. Managed a mile out and then back for 12.1. I’m pretty happy with myself because this was NOT looking like it was going to happen.

The nice thing about the Ritz is that when you get back they hand you a bottle of ice water and a towel and say “welcome back”. At the hotels I stay at on my own dime they would never know if you were back or not until you didn’t clear out of the room!

Tougher than you thought - you’re one of the toughest woman I know! Good job.

Finally unlocked my 23andme genetic testing. Some very useful info:

  • confirms that I'm 76% less likely to have back hair.
  • I'm likely to have 85% more Neanderthal in me than the rest of the population (as my wife attests to.)
  • 61% more likely to be able to smell asparagus in my pee.
  • I'm 93% more likely to have wet ear wax.
  • I'm 51% more likely to have a longer big toe than second toe.
  • I have the ACTN3 gene which has been associated in numerous studies with elite athlete status and with variation in muscle strength and sprint ability in the general population.
  • For what it's worth I don't have any of the 79 disease variants that they test for like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, etc.

I’m curious what the ramifications of testing like this would have on health/life insurance? Do insurance companies test for disease variants? I know I’ve given blood to life insurance in the past. Just wondering.

Going to run sprints on the beach today!

That’s hilarious! Do they really tell you all that? The disease part is good, though!

Yesterday’s half marathon went well. Not a PR, but I don’t honestly expect to ever PR a half again, but my time was better than I expected. I felt good the whole race and enjoyed it. I was more sore than usual afterwards, though. I guess age is creeping up on me. One of our Back on My Feet members ran his first half marathon and totally crushed it. He is super fast, but more of a sprinter and had never run longer distances until he joined the group in January. He ended up 13th overall, with a net 6:37 pace. He is such a good guy it’s wonderful to see him succeed.

FallGirl - wow, what dedication to do that 20 mile walk in the rain. Hoping for good weather for you for the event in two weeks. How long did the walk take yesterday?

MOWC - great job with that 12 mile run!

abasket - I hope you’re enjoying your volunteering today. I overheard several people at our half marathon yesterday who were headed over to your race today! Sounds like you did really well at the expo!

ohio - I love those results - that’s hilarious!

Bunsen - I’ll bet the yard/gardens at your new place will be gorgeous! I can picture you and Mr. B out working in the yard today and I’ll bet you’ll be that really good kind of sore tomorrow after doing all that yard work.
