FallGirl- GREAT job on that walk! And also, great job remembering the extras! It took me way too long to remember that stuff last year during my training. And I loved the bit about wedding couple coming out and y’all changing socks!
MOWC- Awesome job getting that run in!
It’s going to be cold and rainy today. I had wanted to go for a walk outside just to get moving today, but I’m going to the gym today. I’m trying to decide between the spin bike and elliptical. I don’t usually feel any soreness after races, but I guess a half is too long to under train for and not feel something. I actually think it’s from the stretching I did before I went to bed last night. Can I just say, I’m not “old” (I don’t even know what constitutes old anymore, especially when I see ladies in their 70s out crushing that half yesterday and are full of life, and 20-something year olds who complain after walking for 10 minutes and can’t do this or that…), but geez, I can’t just wing things like I used to!
Great job @C3Baker. Also I enjoy hearing about the people you work with at Back on My Feet. I had never heard of that program until reading your posts.
We started out about 9 yesterday and finished after 4. My group took a LOT of bathroom breaks (one of the benefits of walking in a city) which slowed us down somewhat. At one point I was walking with 4 other women (the groups kept shifting) and I was the young one. The next youngest was 65, but I would have guessed a decade younger for all of them.
OOOH! @MomofWildChild – I’m going to tell my husband that he needs to welcome me home from runs with ice water and a towel! That would really be a nice thing, and I’d bet he’d do it, too. Thanks for the idea.
Ohio that’s is some hilarious information. And MOWC, I love that you helped yourself at the sprinkler AND at the club!
C3, sounds like a successful race. Can’t have a PR everytime!
I had a great time manning mile 25 at the marathon. Race started at 7:05 (?) and the first runner - a young guy who is known for racing around here - was the first one through at about 9:20. Apparently he wasn’t breaking any records because was at least 1.5 miles ahead of guy #2! - wow! No reason for him to hurry! I had to really cheer and give props to the first woman who came through looking really strong - girl power!!
So inspiring. Saw a young man I know who has interned with me at work who has Prater Willis walk through. A fireman who runs each year in full firefighter garb in honor of all firemen locally who have fallen. A medical student who I met her first year of medical school and who is now about to enter her residency - and had no time to train - but insisted she run in Toledo “one more time”. Big hugs there. And countless other inspiring people. All ages, sizes and shapes. I was there until 1:30 - that means those last people were out there for 6.5 hours. I told each and every one of them towards the end that I heard a big shiny medal was waiting for them a mile ahead and full bragging rights for the rest of the year.
So many runners said “thank you” for cheering. I was really touched by it all. Some of the race organization left much to be desired (I never saw one race coordinator come my way - no potty break, no water, nothing for me). I came prepared. But if I’m available, I will 100% be at mile 25 come next year. It was awesome.
Abasket I bet each and every runner was grateful for your support. Too bad you didn’t get any breaks! It’s tough standing that long. The fireman who runs in firefighter gear - what a great tribute but tough to do! Hard enough to run in running gear.
abasket- what a great place to be! I know the runners appreciated it! I can’t believe no one came to relieve you so you could have a break!
I’m home after a long day. It is cold and raining here in Tennessee, and we all got off the Florida flight in sandals. I had light sneakers in my carryon, so put them on in the airport. I still got soaked getting to my car. Ugh. Welcome home. Glad to be home, though.
La Jolla Half today - I just wanted to finish under 3 hours with all of those crazy hills & made it with a bit to spare. I’m having some IT band issues & couldn’t run on the downhills without a lot of pain. These halfs always show you which body part is currently your weak link!
Sounds like everyone had quite a weekend of running, walking, volunteering, landscaping. So many worthwhile activities!
I spent yesterday helping my daughter and her husband move all their personal stuff and clothes into their new house. It’s unfathomable how they stuffed so much stuff into a one bedroom apartment! Movers come on Tuesday for all the furniture.
Did a 55 mile training ride today with my regular training partner and a former CAT 1 racer who runs the cycling aspects of the Habitat for Humanity Ride for Homes that I do each June. It’s uncanny how strong she is. Every pedal stroke she takes seems effortless like flowing water. There is a dancing lightness to the way she makes the bike move that is just beautiful to watch.
Did 50K steps today. We hiked the South Kebab trail to Phantom Ranch, then Bright Angel in the Grand Canyon. 17 miles, about 6 hours moving. My husband wants to do the Rim to Rim to Rim in October, 43 (or is it 46) miles in a day . I dunno, maybe if I get in better shape.
Last couple of miles were interesting. I got behind in my food and ran out of energy, could barely move. When the food kicked in, I started moving quickly to the top. I need to figure this out, it is extraordinary how it affects me, I just completely hit the wall, and then felt great.
Used running shoes, which was fine. Brought my hiking boots to use, but when I put them on, they felt awful. The only problem is that it was dicey to run downhill, with not enough traction, but I never fell. Just slowed down. Beer tastes great!
Wow! So much good stuff happened while we celebrated the Earth Day by… moving dirt. 5 full pickup beds of topsoil unloaded and spread. Grass seeded. Topped with peat moss and rolled. Lawn for the future owners of house1 will be ready in a few weeks. 20,000 steps and counting!
50K steps is a LOT @busdriver11 ! Sounds like a beautiful place to hike.
I loved your post @abasket and it makes me think that I should volunteer at a race (no lack of opportunities). What a lot of inspiring people!
Supposed to be cool and rainy today and my running program starts tonight. I’ll see how many of my recruits show up.Absent any thunder/lightning we’ll go out.
@LKnopeforanime – welcome! Stress eating is a struggle for many of us, I believe. And diet is definitely a huge part of weight loss. Is there anything in particular going on in your life right now that is stressful? Hang in there.
3.9 miles, outside, at the beach! Yippeeeee!! Glad to be back here, even with all the spring chores that need doing. H is hard at work on the sailboat, sanding, painting, varnishing, etc., etc. Of course that means everything else is up to me. So many weeds already … BUT, today is gorgeous and my outdoor activity will be at the golf club. I need to hit up the driving range a few times before my Ladies League starts next Tuesday.
