I look at Sabaray’s Pilates and Michael’s cycling and I think that I should be doing that!
I think I should either be doing it all or cutting my mileage back! But- that June marathon looms…
I think it’s really easy when you’re a novice like me to get sucked into the mentality of if some is good, more must be better. I started wearing my fitbit continuously to get a better idea of my sleep patterns but also my HR. I know it’s not as precise as other monitors, but it’s better than nothing. Over the past month I’ve gotten 6 hours of sleep on average and it’s interrupted several times a night. My resting HR has gone from 57 to 67. I’ve been working really hard over the past year and frankly, things haven’t gone very well. I think my body’s trying to tell me something.
6 hours isn’t much if that is also averaging in weekend! Are you someone who requires “less” sleep? Don’t underestimate the power of sleep!
I think the restlessness is one thing, actually waking up and not being able to go back to sleep is another. If I look back to my sleep for this M-Th I average right about 7 hours a night and a range of 5-9 times “restless”. Just thought it might be helpful for you to see how others rate - I don’t know how normal or abnormal my sleep is!!!
I do catch up a little on sleep on the weekend - about 8 hours per night.
Still raining buckets outside - went to the fitness center at lunch and ran a 5k. Done.
Been off a few days. Just feeling funky. Enjoyed reading others’ work!
I’m in this weird position I sometimes get myself in. I feel like I’ve been following some kind plan for a while- marathon plan from June-November (with two shorter races in late Nov. and Dec.), half marathon plan from Feb-April for the half, then the 10k the week after. Part of me is mentally over having a plan, but I know me and in some things I’m either all or nothing. And I need structure and some kind of consistent schedule in my life. I also have my Memorial Day race (12k) and a 10k in mid June. I need to figure out some kind of plan that is reasonable that I will stick to, but like I also said, I’m kind of just mentally tired of having a plan. Does that make any sense?
I think I need to really figure out some goals and prioritize. I get in that whole one step forward, two steps back thing. I feel like I just took one big step back, I don’t want to take that second one! Maybe I can make a plan for the week each Sunday?
And finally, very sorry to hear that FallGirl. It sounds like he had a full life and is a good role model for us all.
Funny, I’m just the opposite. I started my first plan ever, today (Hanson method). I think my problem is that I never have a plan, I just go out there and run as long and as fast as I want…which usually ends up being too short and too slow, and nothing really gets accomplished. I’m setting a goal for a 4 hour marathon. I think I could probably do that right now on a perfect day (cool, no injuries, correct fueling, and no blisters), but there is no perfect day. I figure the marathon training will be the right training to do for the Pike’s Peak Ascent, even though it’s only a half.
Perhaps you’re tired of it because your plan is too difficult or too strict? Can you just substitute other types of workouts for days in your plan if you get sick of it?
Did anyone watch the “Breaking2” run last night? This was an attempt by 3 elite marathoners to break the 2 hour barrier. Eliud Kipchoge came heartbreakingly close at 2:00:25. Thrilling to watch.
Didn’t watch - but heard about it. Even professionals have disappointments.
busdriver- I looked at what I’ve been doing, and I don’t think it’s too much. I think it’s everything else in my life outside of that that’s too much right now.
We’ll see. I also prefer running outside to the treadmill and I haven’t been able to do that in a while for whatever reason. I’m just telling myself now that it’ll come, just be patient!
And OMG the 2:00:25 marathon! I know that’s disappointing for him but holy cow! I can’t even imagine that!
I didn’t watch it live but saw all the coverage when I woke up. Incredible. I was interested in it. A lot of runners (especially those who question Nike’s ethics and policies) were opposed to the whole thing, but I thought it was a legitimate thing to do. It’s not a world record and everyone knew that, since it was aided by pacers and water was given by bicycle riders etc. It is still an incredible accomplishment and just mind boggling.
11.5 miles this morning. Too fast and the last few were not at all fun. 2 hours. Over dressed for the sunny start (finally- the SUN) but it clouded up and I was OK for the last half. Still not sure how 26.2 is going to happen in a month.
Doesn’t is stink when life gets in the way of what you want to do? I detest running on a treadmill, in fact I usually just crank it all the way up and walk fast, as I am very uncomfortable with that, plus it is no fun. That would be painful doing everything on the treadmill!
Bus- I don’t remember. Have you run a marathon yet at any point? Good luck with the Hanson program. It’s a good one!
Jumped onto the race bandwagon today, H and I ran a 5k together this morning. Finished in 31:20-something. Neither us us were too enthused about going when we woke up, but it’s a race in our town, run in memory of a young man who, in 1987, was hit by a car and killed while running. A family friend, best friends with my brother. H has run this race just about every year…won #1 resident finisher a few times. He ran turtle pace with me this year since he’s not able to train for speed like he wants to. Age, coupled with after effects of his major GI surgery 5 years ago make it difficult for him to run hard. Results aren’t posted yet but I think we finished at the exact same time!
Anyhow, we went, and had a great time together! I’m not much for running with people so that was a milestone for me!
MOWC, I have never run a marathon, just some halfs. But I’ve gone on some long hikes at full intensity, so I have had the experience of working hard for many hours. I’m hoping this program works well, because it seems like something realistic. I think as long as I can stay away from injury and fuel myself properly, it might be perfect.
8 mile easy pace run today, though I had a 20 min break in the middle of it. Found a runners credit card on the trail at Greenlake, and was able to google him and call his cell phone. He was very happy. Funny thing about Seattle, we have lost so many things over the years (credit cards, wallets, phones), and they always come back to us.
Wow, JustaMom5465, that must have been a very emotional race. How very sad! Good for you for doing it, especially when you have to force yourself to do it in the morning. It would be so easy to just roll over and go back to bed.
Great job @JustaMom5465 !!! Very nice time!!! <3 on the race cause.
Greetings from LaLa Land!
Walked more than 15,000 steps and climbed 75 floors per Mr.'s Fitbit. Went to Griffith observatory - parking was a zoo. We drove to the bottom of the hill and found an empty parking lot. A nice steep hike to the top felt great. Mr. took a nap while I watched the show at the planetarium, and then we decided to check out Pasadena. OMG, Huntington library gardens are amazing! Forget art and books, the succulents are to die for. Sadly, we only had one day to play and are leaving tomorrow.
@JustaMom5465 - great job.
Going “dark” from this thread starting tomorrow for the next 5 weeks. Going to eliminate as much distraction as possible.Headed to Flagstaff (by myself) to train and focus on the Senior Olympics in Birmingham AL the first week in June. I’m lucky that my wife supports this crazy idea of training at altitude and I have the job flexibility (own my business) to do this.
Goal: Three golds (400,800,1500) in the 60-64 age group.
Mission: To compete at my ultimate best. Leave nothing on the track. Enjoy the process and embrace competing.

You have incredible commitment and determination, Ohio. Wishing you the best as you chase your dreams!
