Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

A large local running group has a “sub group” of women who run together on Saturdays. The group evolved out of the women’s training program so when we meet up we split into groups based on distance and pace. It’s very flexible and really good for those of us who can’t run distances at a fast pace.

I would love to find someone to run with on weekday mornings.

Wish you lived nearby, FallGirl – you could join us on Wednesday mornings for our run. If you’re ever in NYC (I believe you have a daughter who lives nearby?) PM me and we’ll meet up.

Did the interval training last night. About 30 runners, many training for the NYC marathon, who broke out into pace groups starting in the 5 minute range up to 7 minutes.

I was in the other group – training for the 10 mile race. We had done a 2 mile warm up, then we did 2 miles at half marathon pace then intervals (400 meters, then recover). I couldn’t keep it straight when we were supposed to run fast or recover so I stuck with a nice 24 year old woman who is used to running with her mother.

I told DD she has to join so she can meet a nice young man who’s a runner.

^ D is in Brooklyn and is running a half there on October 15th.

I wish I could join your running group @Classof2015

@FallGirl - I wish you could too! Wednesday at 7 am by the Bethesda Fountain - someday I’ll see you there!

^ Oh I would run in Central Park every day if I could
I love NYC.

It’s new to me and I’m really enjoying it. Best of luck to your DD in her race! Looks like Sunday will be hot for mine (high of 87). But nowhere as bad as Sabaray’s Marine Corps race conditions. Happy Friday to all!

87 is pretty hot!

We’ve been unseasonably warm lately but I haven’t been running as much mileage wise. Physically I feel a lot better and am actually looking forward to running instead of looking at it as “Oh, I have to run”.

Have been keeping up with Barre, circuit strength classes and Pilates. 3-4 runs a week. Now I just need an extra day in the week so I can actually rest!

Good luck to all the racers this weekend!

Bunsen- I’m trying a new brand of shoes. 361 degrees. I have the Spira 2 and after two runs, I’m impressed. They are a more “normal” shoe and won’t be replacing my Hokas, but I love the fit and feel. You might want to check out the reviews.

9 days until my next marathon…

Gotta look those up! Thanks MOfWC.

We really needed a break. Taking a few days off in sunny Maui while trying to stay active. Went for a nice hike yesterday, then played in the waves at DT Fleming beach. Snorkeling is in the plans today.

Good luck to all racing this weekend!

Maui’s supposed to be gorgeous – that sounds great!

Are you officially tapering, MOWC?

My family loves Maui. We typically go there during the holidays in December. There are a couple “good” (relative) gyms on the West side and while I love running in the warm humid air, there’s not a lot of “flat” (relative) land that’s not along the local streets and highways unless it’s where you are in Kapalua.

Enjoy!

Our hotel has a pretty decent exercise room. I actually did 18 miles on a treadmill there a few years ago when I was training for a marathon. Mr. B did not let me run along the busy road, which was the other alternative. But this time, we decided that our time is better spent hiking in tropical forests and swimming in the ocean! Something we don’t get to do back home.

^^Jealous but well deserved!

I am tapering. I don’t do as long of a taper as some people, but tomorrow I will try to do 10 miles and that will basically be it except for very short runs.

Good to hear that, MOfWC. Happy tapering!

Snorkeling was a success! Mr. B harassed a large rockfish, we found a huge sea cucumber, and to top it all off, saw a turtle. But that was not it! There was a humongous moray eel sticking out of the rock right where the turtle grazed, so Mr. took a few nice shots of that scary thing. We swam close to a mile.

Not too far away there’s a great breakfast called The Gazebo, you may know it. It’s located right on Napili Bay. You will usually see a ton of sea turtles around there as well as a bit further down the beach. I’m envious!

Good luck @Classof2015 and anyone else racing this weekend! Stay hydrated!

I’ll be signing 5 of us up for the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot - D, S and S’s friend will run the 10K and SIL and I will run 5K. I went back and forth on what distance to run but I ran this 5K last Thanksgiving and another race on the same course on New Years Eve so I want to stick with the 5K and see how I compare. In addition D and I are looking at running another 5K here in mid December. She will be home that weekend as for a wedding.

Yes, good luck to the racers! And Bunsen, lucky enough to be in Maui. I love Hawaii, all of the islands, but I think Maui is my favorite!

I’m going to attempt training again in a couple of weeks. Trying to get a faster half marathon time in March. I started training a few weeks ago and got huge blisters on my heels, which is unexpected and discouraging. Looked at my shoes, and there were huge holes in the heels that I hadn’t noticed, so hopefully that’s all it was.

@busdriver11 - that’s got to be it! Hope the blisters heal. Time for new shoes!

Thanks all for the good wishes. Heat was definitely a factor. 79 degrees, sunny, 68% humidity. Had to walk and stop a few times. They had sprinklers at mile 5 and bags of ice at Mile 7. Ended up with a 1:26 time. My first 5 miles were at 8minutes/mile, then last 5 were over 9. I really don’t think I went out too fast, but maybe in this heat, I did.

Fun race. 15,000 people. Glad it’s done.

Good job! That sounds like very tough weather for that distance.
