Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Bus, I often find comfort in the ritual and routine of exercise. Even when things were so terrible and I couldn’t imagine them getting worse (but they did) having Pilates or a run on the schedule kept me going. It helps to find something you enjoy.

Good lord, Ohio. That woman needs to get a life.

Bus, I use my running and swimming time to think and maintain my sanity. I started running regularly when something awful was happening in order to deal with it. Running was the perfect excuse to get off by myself and work things out.

That’s a really good way to think of it, @Lizardly. I would love to get to that point. That seems very mentally healthy. When everything else is going down the tubes, at least you have that.

It’s kind of something you can control when you can’t control the other stuff that is going on.

So true, MOfWC. I am going to have that printed, framed, and posted on the wall in my exercise room!

@Lizardly

Agreed. Joining this hiking club has been good for my mental health. All I have to do is show up on time and follow the line of hikers in front of me. A slice of time where the rest of my life leaves me alone. No cell phone calls. No emails. It’s meditative and restorative.

Went out for my daily (when I can) lunch time walk at work. The 1.5 miles was enough for me to get a pop up on my tracking app that I finished my 2017 walking challenge - with more than 2 months to go in the year! My main challenge is 500 running - which I may not meet but close…so I added purposeful walking as a secondary goal - 250 miles for the year.

So as of today I’m adding a third goal…an additional 100 miles before the new year.

An update… the woman that was crushed by a stilupid bicyclist did sue him. Good for her!

“But I did not mean to hit her…” is a lame excuse. If you behave like a negligent ass, you might very well have to pay for the consequences of that stupidity.

Thanks for the update, Bunsen! Good for her!

It was a beautiful morning for a run here. Cool and crisp, clear skies - beautiful star canopy overhead (yep, I run that early). We stopped in the park headed back to the cars just to take it all in. A good reason to get out there in the morning. 6.2 miles.

Today was weigh, measure and photograph day. Down 4 pounds and 4 inches since last month so I think the “easy” weight is gone. Still feel very good about the progress. This feels sustainable.

Did a boot camp this morning, wow, it was really hard. Some of the women are in phenomenal condition, it is really impressive. It turned me off a little because the instructor (like the only other time I did it), kept coming up to me in a futile attempt to tell me I was standing wrong (talking to me on the mike in front of the entire class). Turn your knees this way, no that way, legs in too close, butt not far enough back…blah, leave me alone! I think she just finally gave up. My husband said that I should tell her to leave me alone, I’m injured, but to be honest, I’d have to say, “Leave me alone, I’m old, I’m weak and out of condition, I’m not familiar with this and I can’t understand you on that headset, I have neck and back soreness, I’m uncoordinated, and I really want to lay down on this mat and take a nap!” :open_mouth:

Great job sabaray! That’s really excellent loss of pounds and inches.
Bus- I would HATE that! You really should tell him that you want to find your own way for awhile with the class. It sounds really hard.

I am in Dallas on a combo business/personal trip and I got to “return to my running roots” and ran around White Rock Lake, which is where everyone trains in Dallas. It is somewhat pretty (well, for Dallas quite pretty), but is over 9 miles around. I managed to add on a little ( on purpose) for 10.3 miles. There were a lot of runners and cyclists but I didn’t see anyone I knew. I took some pictures. The last 4 miles felt really tough. It was 73 degrees, very humid and there was some wind.

I hear you, Bus! There are 3 circuit classes at my studio with three different instructors. I like two of them. The third has a “drill sergeant” mentality and seems annoyed that I have the nerve to attempt her class. I’ve gone twice and that was enough. I’ll stick with the instructors I like, thank you very much! You ought to try Pilates.

Yeah, I should check into the other classes, pilates and yoga. They sound really hard too, but maybe the instructors won’t pay attention to me as much. A friend of mine really wants me to try Zumba, but I am soooo not a dancer!

It is an absolutely beautiful day here. We had a nice trip to the park and then I thought I’d just do a little running. 75 degrees, cool breeze, sunny…a few hill repeats. 3.15 miles. Amazing how good it feels when there’s no pressure.

That sounds lovely, sabaray!

Monday is my “fun” day - early morning Barre class. Our instructor is also a runner and she incorporates cardio bursts, planks, core work etc. into a traditional Barre type workout. I really enjoy the class.

Bus, I was thinking of you when I saw this video. This is very similar to a lot of the exercises I do in my Circuit class. It’s about 30 minutes, I think, and would give you a fairly decent workout. I really like running but I am seeing really positive changes by mixing up my workouts - and my running has improved.

I’m a little under the weather , but plan to try doing some of that when I feel better. Thanks for posting @sabaray .

I’m in my mid-50s, and my feet are rebelling. I’m having burning aching pain in the balls of my feet up near the line of my toes. Dr. Google says this could be metatarsal pain and recommends inserts. Reviewers at Amazon seem to think Pedag 3/4 length orthotics could very well fix the pain for a lot less than custom orthotics.

At first, I thought the pain was arthritis, but no, it’s different. I walk 4-7 miles a day (dog walking plus on my feet at work), and I have been hiking 10-12 miles on Sundays.

Is this a thing? Do your feet blow out when you get older?

Just an fyi follow up: had my liver MRI yesterday. I’ll update when I get results hopefully mid next week.
