Monkey race report- About 40 degrees at the start but with a “feels like” of about 36, so I wore the Lulu white puff jacket with the zipper vents. I kept it on the whole time. I got warm a couple of times, but then we would hit some wind and I was glad I had it. Thin tech shirt (Oiselle) under it. Fleecy tights from Gypsy Runner. Hoka Clifton 4s. I think I used 3 Humagels and drank the Sword electrolyte drink on the course and a couple of small cups of sugared Coke in the later miles.

The race is really hard, but I walked whenever I felt like I was pushing too hard, and that seemed to work. This was my second fastest Monkey, surprisingly. I ran a 4:18 (I think) in 2009 and have had 5:14 and 5:06 since. The course is a tad short, but we early starters, as a group, missed the first turn and added about 1/10 on our own! My husband was with me on the bike for a lot of the miles since he was a course cyclist. One of the big problems was that there were a lot of leaves, acorns and sticks/branches on the road since we had some heavy storms yesterday. I almost fell a couple of times and I felt like I wasn’t seeing well (retina swelling issue), so I was VERY careful. I could just see my wiping out on a steep downhill. It was really a beautiful day on the course and the park is gorgeous. I don’t want to see it again for awhile, but it’s gorgeous!

There was a race walker who nearly beat me. He was hauling ass. I was not thrilled that a walker was going to beat me, and I said something not very nice to my husband at one point about this very lovely gentleman. I think it was something like “Where is that bleeper who is race walking? Am I ahead of him?” I could lose him on the downhills, but he would get me back on the uphills when I walked. I did beat him. Yay, me.

I beat a lot of people I didn’t expect to beat, and won the 5 year age group but awards were in 10 year groups, so I didn’t get a sock monkey. Boo. I think my son could have won (if healthy) and I had been hoping he would give me his monkey.

Apparently the lead cyclist led the lead runner off course (not sure how that could happen with the course monitors) and the guy got pissed (understandably) and quit. So the 2nd guy won with a slow winning time of 3:14.

One nice thing about the early start ( 7 am instead of 8 am which is the regular start) was that the main start caught up with us and we got to see everyone. Normally we don’t- well, some of them who lap you but not as many as this way.
Fantastic pot luck food at the end- and craft beer.
Done!

I think someone here was a fan of the APL shoes - jackrabbit.com has a variety of them available online for less than $50. Might be worth a look.

It was Bunsen. I haven’t seen them yet!

Wow!! What a deal. All smaller sizes are gone. Thank goodness for big flippers. Thanks @sabaray !!

Fun 8.5 mile hike this morning with the club! There’s a Meet Up group that is hiking tomorrow morning, then a Sunday hike with the club. So happy!

Minimal Advil seems to be solving any foot pain. Knock on wood!

I’m looking forward to PIE!

Happy Thanksgiving all!

10K Turkey Trot is in the books. A sunny relatively warm November morning. Finished in the top quartile, which for an average runner is great. If there had been a few obstacles thrown into the course, then that would have been better for me, performance-wise.

Feel great! Much to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

5K Turkey Trot here and I broke 30 minutes for my PR. 4/16 in my age group (60-64). I’ll take it.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Attention Elliptigo fans! All bikes are on sale! The Arc (the one I have ) is $799! That is a great price. @busyparent - I think you were asking about that.

Athleta is offering 20% off everything today. I might be in trouble…

You need to reward yourself, @FallGirl!

Today I am going to a “butt camp” class. Then I am going to get some new running shoes. My running mojo came back in a big way yesterday.

^ Yay for the return of running mojo! That does call for new shoes.

Thank you Bunsen. I decided to buy the rower off of Craigslist only to find it was no longer listed. Oh well. I’ve been getting rides to work this week and walking home which is nice. It’s only about 3 miles so an easy commute. I could travel by eliptigo!

@busyparent FYI, Assault Air Bikes are $100 off with free shipping for the next 4 days ($700 shipped). These are modern version of wind bikes so as you cycle and pull on the handles faster, resistance builds. These bikes are staples in CrossFit boxes (gyms). They’re an outstanding workout used in conjunction with other forms of exercise.

I want this for Christmas! :((

I’ve used that at the gym several times, Bunsen - it’s a really nice piece of equipment! You need one!

Thanks Sabaray! Mr. B needs one - for real. He wants to get into running, but I am afraid that his knee that had surgery might go bust again. This is much gentler than a treadmill.

Thx Sushiritto!

Got in some good hikes over the long weekend. A little over 8 miles on TDay, a little over 8 miles on Black Friday, and 12 miles yesterday. My legs are sore.

I quizzed lots of people on yesterday’s hike re: their trips for 2018, and if they are going with a hiking/travel company. The Club’s international trip for 2018 is already full (!!!), and although I’m on the waiting list, I’m going to have to have a back up plan.

D1, who just started her first “real” job, says she is unsure of her vacation time, so don’t count on her for a Rocky Mountain hiking trip in 2018.

I did get some good ideas from picking people’s brains yesterday, so I’ll start researching and see if I can find anything within my (admittedly low) budget.

My uplifting story of the day is, after yesterday’s hike, I tossed my backpack on the ground in front of my car in the parking lot and went around to the rear hatch, popped it open, and pried my tired feet out of hiking boots and into my Tevas. Chatted with some people, noticed the time, and took off.

Got home, and realized I had left my backpack on the ground in front of my car! Argh! So stupid!

I sent a text to the hike leader and asked if anyone had grabbed it. She said she wasn’t aware of anyone having it.
I sent an email to the group, but figured it was going to be awhile before anyone read it. I called the Forest Preserve dispatch, and a ranger called me back right away. He drove to the parking lot at the trail head and found my backpack right where I left it! He offered to meet me halfway and deliver it to me! I couldn’t believe the good fortune, and how friendly the ranger was.

It was a little bright spot in what can sometimes seem like a dark world.

Gotta love this workout set to the new Taylor Swift’s song (love the song!):

It looks easy, but is is blasted hard!! That gal just rocks the moves. Enjoy.

I found a hiking vacation that has caught my eye! RMNP. All women. Small group. 8 days. 6 days of hiking.

The blurb recommends that even women who exercise regularly should train for this trip due to altitude, elevation gains/losses, mileage, and consecutive days of hiking.

I’m sort of up to the challenge, y’know?, to get ready by August…AND I’m sort of afraid how my knees and feet and back are going to handle it. (HOW big of a bottle of Advil…?)

With one kid out of the house, and the other at university, I keep asking myself, WHAT am I waiting for? Get out there and live your life! Those were some tough years you just put in, taking care of everyone else.

Encourage me, people. Or, inject some cruel reality into my head. lol
