Difference SUNY Buffalo vs SUNY Buffalo State

Hello i was wondering whats the significant difference between Buffalo and Buffalo State. Also are the campuses very close? I am majoring engineering (electrical) although i may choose undecided engr.

Thank you

I think they are like 15 minutes apart. I actually have a good friend who switched from general engineering to electrical engineering his sophomore year (this year) and transferred to SUNY Buffalo from Buffalo College. Buffalo College is kind of like 1 step above a community college, SUNY Buffalo much more respectable, it’s a huge research university but it’s primarily known as a life science university (not bad in engineering though).

Yeah, I live like 3 blocks from Buffalo State college. It doesn’t have the same reputation that SUNY Buffalo does.

SUNY Buffalo state is not as good as a school as SUNY Buffalo. Buffalo State is mostly commuter students, so if you are from the Buffalo area, don’t go there.

It is a bit of an overstatement to say UB is a better school. It depends on what one’s interests are. UB is a research institution with a primarily focus on hard and health sciences at the postraduate level. Undergrads rarely benefit from studying with the hard core researchers UB is so proud of. Buff State is a good choice for folks interested in liberal arts, teaching, music, speech therapy and several other majors. At Buff State, as an undergrad, you will be more likely taught by actual faculty than is the case for undergrads at UB. However, in the case at hand, engineering, UB would be the better choice.

Buff State’s campus is located on the west side of Buffalo across the street from the Albright-Knox Art Museum. UB is split into two campuses, with South Campus being located on Buffalo’s Northern City Limits and North Campus being located in the town of Amherst. If you’re interested in the liberal arts, apply to Buff State. If you’re interested in Science, Engineering, or Business go to UB. Since you are planning on majoring in engineering, your only choice is UB, as Buff State does not even have an engineering department. The SEAS here at UB is excellent. The professors here are competent, the advisory board consists of people whose only job is to advise students, so they’re always available (no waiting for professors doubling as advisors to make an appointment), the coursework is challenging, there’s many engineering-related clubs and societies on campus, the resources (a library, 2 computer labs, 5 academic buildings devoted to engineering departments, etc.) are many. The only downside is that while competent, the majority of T.A.s and many professors can barely speak English well enough to be fully understood by their students.

Close in name and distance, not much else!

UB
much better, DEFINITELY recommend if you’re going into engineering.(I’m going there for chemical engineering!)

Buffalo State
Well, let’s just put it this way- one girl in my school wanted to go to UB, so she applied ED, but was on the verge of a mental breakdown when she found out she checked the box for Buffalo state. Not a good rep, would not recommend.

I know this is crazy old, but OMG. that’s terrible. I would literally flip out.

will there be a forum for Buff State?

Locally, UB is known to far superior in most fields, especially for hard sciences and business.

Outside of New York, most people have not heard of either of them. I grew up in Buffalo and went to UB, I live in Washington for a short while, and few people there had heard of UB. Then I lived in Kentucky, same thing.

If you plan on staying Buffalo after you graduate, go to UB, it has a far better reputation. If you plan on leaving Buffalo (many do), pick the school that you like because few will have heard of either.

Five years ago I might have agreed with many of the things written here. I was beyond angry when I had to settle for Buffalo State because my parent’s refused to let me go into debt for the rest my life to attend St. Bonaventure for journalism.

Today: Not a single regret.

The great things about Buffalo State cannot be properly measured by the College Board or Princeton Review. Buffalo State represents Buffalo much better than UB in some ways. UB grabs the headlines with their research programs, but Buffalo State is where you will find out what Buffalo is really about.

This might be of special interest to the students from New York City who are considering Buffalo State since it is cheaper. Buffalo is a city that has been in an economic down for more than thirty years. People have written off the city as being a joke. “Wide-right” “No Goal” “Buffalo Wings” But people still come here and call it home. Immigrants from across the world are coming here. They are fixing up abandoned homes, setting up shops, and adding a new flavor to the city that wasn’t there as early as ten years ago. How do I know all of this? I was sent to write stories about the West Side of Buffalo for a communication course. It was not dangerous and I found some really cool things to do down there.

The city is what draws professors to Buffalo. The coolest English Literature Professor is from Ireland and set up Bloom’s Day in Buffalo. Drew Khan is a well-known in the theater district but what makes him unique is that he is one of the founders of the Anne Frank Project. This is a week long event in September where issues related to genocide are discussed.

There is also one very interesting thing at Buffalo State that I swear you will not find anywhere else. Prospective first-year students: consider signing up for a Learning Community. I recommend “It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine…”

Some might wonder why I wrote such a lengthy reply. I Googled “UB Vs Buffalo State,” and this was the first site to show up. I am going to UB for graduate school with an open mind and some Buffalo State College pride.

Buffalo Dreamer; I know someone who will be starting grad school in the Fall at Buffalo State; to extremely competitive Art Conservation program.
