Good question about the tours. Honestly it varied - some schools have days that they advertise for nurses to attend info sessions and tour the nursing schools (Fairfield/UPitt/Villanova/UConn); at other schools my daughter sent an email to the deans/administrative people asking if she could tour the nursing school while we were there for a regular campus visit and they were receptive and it was a pretty formal (but unadvertised) process (BC/UVirginia/UMassachusetts). Lots of hunting and pecking and searching. I suspect that the nursing schools that admitted your daughter would be delighted to give her a tour so the process is probably easier for you now then when we were on the âoutsideâ.
Congratulations to your daughter on so many acceptances and awesome merit awards! So many great options for her and good luck with the California schools!
Thank you so much, we will reach out to them when we have more ducks in a row and figure out when we can go first ! Different schools have spring break in different weeks. My DD has activities in our spring break (first week of April) and there is the Easter break (for many religious schools). I just realized how expensive is to fly half across the country even and more so from coast to coast, with hotels and car and everything. I thought the problem will be just finding the time and taking her out of school for a 3-4 day extended weekend trip, lol!
Good luck to your daughter as well! My daughter loved the SHU Nursing Day tour and campus! 1/15 is MLK Holiday so wondering if they will mail earlier? hmmm⊠Its kind of nice to get a decision in the mail after all this portal stalking. haha!
DD just received notice of only being accepted for pre-nursing at Indiana University. Applied 11/1/23 for early action and received the response earlier than expected on 1/10/24. Obviously her direct admit acceptances will be her top choices.
She applied via the separate direct admit pathway? The website states that direct admit decisions do not come out until March 15th. My daughter was admitted to pre-nursing, but also applied for the DA pathway and had not received a decision yet.
She did do the direct admit process. It wasnât clear that it was a two stage acceptance process, so Iâm glad to hear that the final decision hasnât been made yet and that there is still a chance. Thanks for the information.
I have a 22 BSN grad who went to a very good state school direct admit (Cincinnati). I have a student at Michigan State (not nursing) but I hear the angst over admission to that major, which is super competitive. Last I heard, the typical GPA for sophomores seeking admission was a 3.9 at MSU. In the parentsâ group, there are students who change their major over one B freshman year. The nursing school should be able to tell you the profile of the last class.
I guess Iâm saying that if you get direct admit as a freshman, take it and run. My RN wanted direct admit, and even then there were a few schools that seemed to play fast and loose with the definition. Make sure your definition of direct admit is the same as theirs. At least two schools I, as the parent, really had to pin the nursing school staff down on a few things and even then it didnât sound like direct admit to me lol.
This is 100% correct; there are some sneaky things going on out there in the world of so-called direct-admit BSN programs. Do your HW ⊠and if it sounds too good to be true, it is.
Read all the fine print, ask lots of questions, specifically about competitive progression through the program (seat limits?), secondary admission criteria, and required NCLEX PRACTICE exams (usually in senior year) and how those results may ACTUALLY be used to determine on-time graduation.
My daughter was accepted to Sacred Heart Universityâs Nursing Program via mail yesterday! She loved the campus, has visited several times and did the Nursing Day visit. She is very excited:) She needed that after her PSU let down-lol.
Congratulations!!! My kid didnât check the mail yesterday and is now at work. Sitting here with the big envelope staring at me! Hoping they follow the old school rules of small envelope vs big envelope!
I have been accepted into a few strong direct admit BSN programs that are all smaller schools. However, I feel that I want a larger true college town experience and I am having a hard time giving that up. I have also been accepted to a few non-direct schools that I really like and they are also strong programs. (Iâve done a ton of research on stats of entry and a Plan B should I not get in)
Have any of you made a conscious decision to choose your non direct admit option over direct admit?
I know my student will struggle with that decision if she is accepted at her first college of choice, but as a parent, Iâd be wary of doing that, unless you fully plan out and can afford the alternate plan if you are not accepted in nursing at that preferred college once the pre-nursing portion is over. It probably means at least one more year of college to do the bachelors to BSN path and that is one more year of tuition that wouldnât be needed at a direct admit school. If you have the money in the bank and the extra time in school is not a concern, then it is a bit less risky of an option.
My daughter has really been focusing more on direct admits to be sure she was in the program and not having to reapply and also so she is done in 4 years. She has a few applications that that were pre-nursing (OSU) and then biomedical sciences for non-nursing (Maryland) if she needed to do a PA Pathway instead of nursing. So far she was accepted to several direct admits so that will be her route. Thankfully plan B wasnât needed, but we were worried so she applied to some pre-nursing and non-nursing schools. Direct admit programs just seemed like the safest way to go.
Thank you - I have a substantial scholarship at my #1 non-direct admit making the decision even harder because financially it DOES make sense! I have merit at my non-direct admits, but not like this. I am waiting on my decision from University of Cincinnati BSN 1/23, which is my top direct entry and would fulfill everything I am looking for. Fingers crossed I am worried about this for nothing!!
