Disciplinary Probation Record

My son is applying for a junior level transfer this year (He starts his junior year in the fall). In his first quarter of college, he committed an small academic conduct violation, so small that his professor did not apply sanctions to his grad (he received an A in the class). However, he was placed on disciplinary probation.

Many colleges on the common app ask the following question:

“Have you ever been found responsible for a disciplinary violation at any educational institution you have attended from the 9th grade (or the international equivalent) forward, whether related to academic misconduct or behavioral misconduct, that resulted in a disciplinary action? These actions could include, but are not limited to: probation, suspension, removal, dismissal, or expulsion from the institution”

He is planning to self-report his misconduct, but I’m wondering whether he should even do so. According to judicial affairs, the only way internal information about disciplinary misconduct can be shared between universities is if we sign a specific information release form. In the absence of requiring to sign such a form, as well as with no marks on his transcripts or attendance record, how likely is it that a target school will check?

They asked a question. The answer seems straight forward.

Do the crime, do the time.

Otherwise what’s the lesson ? That you can do bad things and get away with them ?

If it’s that minor, it shouldn’t be an issue.

No school is going to check. With that said your S should answer the question honestly (at the schools that ask) with an explanatory note about the violation and consequence. Good luck to him.
