Discussions Gates Millenium Scholarship - 2010-2011

I think that they would focus more on leadership and potential to help others later on? People who got gates last year were twins who were 3rd and 4th in their class, but they also talked about how they wanted to help the Hispanic community (they were hispanic) after they finished college. This stage does level the playing field in that we are all minorities and come from low income families. I think grades would make a difference, but only a little. So I think that the essays we wrote reflect who we are and how we can possibly make a difference in the world- similar to what Bill and Melinda Gates are doing through their various grants.

Like the valedictorian didn’t make it to finalist status at my school but I did and I am currently salutatorian. Also, many other top ranked students didn’t get it but this one girl (I am not sure of her situation) got it.

But that’s just my opinion. =)

I’m really anxious and excited to see what happens with everyone. I really am crossing my fingers for every qualified applicant who has been in this thread since the beginning. The support and tips that we have each given each other both mentally and academically are surely unmatched by other threads. I hope that everyone who experienced the thought-provoking essays, the deadlines, the recommender & nominator drama, and the anticipation of notification, are able to get this scholarship. As we all know, everyone can’t make it through, but the fact that we put in so much effort to research the possibilities of hope for a better future, makes us stronger individuals.

Good luck to everyone (:

Also, I read this on one of the threads and thought it was awesome: “There are no impossible challenges; the ones that you overcome or fulfill without maximum effort are not challenges to begin with.”

Don’t trip about it, guys. Now is like the verification stage. They’re checking if you have the GPA and the Pell Grant eligibility for the most part. There’s nothing you can do about it. There’s at least a 50% chance that you’re in. And I’m pretty sure the packets will be mailed out this Tuesday. So just wait and see on Wednesday.

I like your expression and your words HeyBurrito, I hope everyone here gets it!

The anticipation is killing me, but I know everything we’ve all been through for this scholarship is worth the wait. Only a few more days and dreams will come true. I wish everyone the best of luck. : )

^ I agree.
Let the countdown begins!
Good luck to everyone!

In my essays, I wrote about my mom’s income. This year, she made around $70,000. I put this in my application, yet they still pushed me through the next round.

Also, I’m ranked 35. I’m really involved in school, come from a big family, have a job, am President of Orchestra, VP of Technology Students Association, Section Leader four years, loads of awards, yet my rank and EFC work against me.

I wrote a letter to the committee explaining the situation that my mother made a good amount of money, yet my parents told me I’m not getting any of it.

Here’s the letter:

Dear committee members,

Firstly, I would like to thank you for selecting me as a finalist. However, the reason I am sending you this unsolicited letter is not to try to gain unfair advantage over the other finalists, but rather to ask you to not base your decision solely on the information presented before you on my Student Aid Report.

Three days ago, I faxed my Student Aid Report with the last page stating I am “…not eligible for a Federal Pell Grant.” I discovered this upon receiving my SAR a week before, yet still decided not to lose hope on winning your prestigious scholarship. I ask that you look past the number that my Expected Family Contribution states, because it is not accurate. True, my mother made an exceptional amount of net income this past year, but her job as a Licensed Vocational Nurse causes my family’s income to fluctuate annually, and this year she will not earn nearly as much. More importantly, my parents have told me repeatedly that I am completely on my own when it comes to college, so I will have no financial support from my family.

For the first fourteen years of my life I lived in a mobile home with seven people, living what some may consider an impoverished life. Yet this did not dissuade my dreams for the future. I have worked hard for college ever since elementary school. Now as a High School student, I have joined clubs and organizations to increase my social, civic and academic skills. For my family’s income to prevent me from something I’ve been working for ever since I was a child is difficult to cope with. My intention is not to offend or disrespect in any way; the only reason I write this letter is to allow me hope that you may make an exception, which I will be forever grateful.

Regardless, it is a great honor to be a finalist. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

(Me), Gates Millennium Finalist

Do you guys think it’ll help, or just make them upset?

I think its fine. It explains your unique situation and they can take it or leave it. At least you tried.

My goodness. The.Anticipation.Is.Horrible. On a happier note, we hear in a couple more days! Good luck everyone! :D

this next few weeks will be long =…yeah, i think this week would be the longest…do u think they send it all out at once or go by when we sent in out stuff? or even just completely random? lol

I think it’s random; it’s a possibility that they tell you in order that they got the info faxed/mailed?

I’m thinking that they send everyone packets overnight on the same day, so as not to cause undue stress. I mean, I’d imagine they received a barrage of calls over a matter of weeks when they sent their first packet on March 26th in 2008.

That would be much better if they sent it all off the same day/night. Would bring relief either way just to know their answer.

I’m pretty sure, from what I remember from last year, acceptances are sent overnight, and denials are sent via snail mail.

So if I don’t get it around mid-April, means I’m more-than-likely getting a rejection one. Shoot. :(

This is all speculation, of course. You never know. But everything was supposed to be in by this past Friday, so I imagine they cut people relatively quickly.

I’m the perfect candidate, with the exception for my EFC. =/

I hread about finalists recieveing IDs last year, anybody have any info on that? thanks

It started working for them about on the 14th. So maybe that’ll work in two days?

So if you’re chosen, you can use the same ID that you used to fill out the application to log into the scholar website?
