@GA2012MOM

But it says “Public Health,” isn’t it the same as med school?

Hey guys. I didn’t get the scholarship, but I received a full scholarship to another college! When a door closes, a window opens!

No, it’s not. I’m not sure what all public health encompasses, but it is not med school. I wish it was for my D’s sake.

one of my friends and I are two finalists at my school. We go to a boarding school in Mobile, AL. He got his award package today in the mail because he get’s all of his mail sent directly to the school, whereas all of my mail is sent to my house. I asked my mom, and she said they haven’t received anything there today, but i know that many people in Alabama have either received a rejection letter or award package. so now I’m 10X more anxious than I was yesterday because I know that something is sitting in a mail room right now and I won’t know until someone checks it at home. I’m not gonna get any sleep tonight.

Everyone’s finding out!! I’m still at school. I don’t get home until around six, since I have Calculus AP tutoring. I feel like calling home every five minutes to see if I get a small envelope, or a fat packet. I’m so worried.

Why’s it taking so long to get to South Texas?!

Thanks for the info GA2012MOM!

I’m so sad right now I’m positively sure I’m not getting this scholarship. :(

From Wiki…

Public health is “the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals.” (1920, C.E.A. Winslow)[1] It is concerned with threats to the overall health of a community based on population health analysis. The population in question can be as small as a handful of people or as large as all the inhabitants of several continents (for instance, in the case of a pandemic). Public health is typically divided into epidemiology, biostatistics and health services. Environmental, social, behavioral, and occupational health are also important subfields.
There are 2 distinct characteristics of public health:

  1. It deals with preventive rather than curative aspects of health
  2. It deals with population-level, rather than individual-level health issues
    The focus of public health intervention is to prevent rather than treat a disease through surveillance of cases and the promotion of healthy behaviors. In addition to these activities, in many cases treating a disease may be vital to preventing it in others, such as during an outbreak of an infectious disease. Hand washing, vaccination programs and distribution of condoms are examples of public health measures.
    The goal of public health is to improve lives through the prevention and treatment of disease.

Gates scholar

African American from CA

from here: [::. The Gates Millennium Scholars .::](http://www.gmsp.org/publicweb/AboutUs.aspx)
“Developing a diversified cadre of future leaders for America by facilitating successful completion of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees; and
Providing seamless support from undergraduate through doctoral programs, for students selected as Gates Millennium Scholars entering target disciplines.”

It says THROUGH doctoral programs not UP TO doctoral programs.

African American from Michigan going into Music and Engineering!
I am so glad that I won this scholarship because without it, I couldn’t go to college (efc: 0). There was so much screaming and crying in my house. Now I will be the first of my generation of my family to graduate from college! Congrats and good luck to all my fellow scholars, whether you won the scholarship or not.

@sswartz

Not sure what you mean?

“Target disciplines” do not include med or law school.

@Intheno

People are posting that Gates does not cover medical school. I found that quote on the Gates Millenium website and it sounds to me like they will cover medical school.
