Discussions Gates Millenium Scholarship - 2010-2011

@angel0407: CONGRATS!!! I’m glad you got it! :slight_smile: I’m praying too that I will get an envelope today–mail should come in about an hour.

Oh my God…this is killing me. Still nothing in the mail today. I just called their office, and was just told “You should know by the end of the month of your status.” Well then. This is just torturing me with suspense. Sigh…

I am Native American from Texas and I received my letter yesterday stating that I did not receive the scholarship. Congratulations to all that did.

I have a 4.66 and have logged thousands of hours of community service for my Cherokee and Native American community, and the Unitarian church of Fort Worth. I am Vice President of my theater club, in National Honors Society, been in Ap classes since my freshman year. My EFC was zero and my mom only makes around 17,000 a year. This would have been so helpful. I just don’t know why I did not get it, I am thankful that I was a finalist though.

^O___o why did they reject you?? That sounds crazy! I’m sorry that you didn’t get it.

I have no idea why. I really wish I could have gotten it because my school is 40,000 a year and my family has no money to send me. I am very thankful that I did get 26,000 in scholarships but I don’t know how I am supposed to fund the rest of my tuition money. I just pray it comes to me in some way.

IM A GATES SCHOLAR – Hispanic from NEW YORK!!! I am estatic.

Congrats! :]

At this point, I’m starting to really worry…I saw an Asian up there that got it in Seattle. And a hispanic from florida right? Hispanic office is in San Francisco…mail has made it all the way across the nation, yet I still haven’t gotten anything. Is there anyone else that is also waiting? I’m worried that my mail got lost…a lot of mail has gotten lost on its way to my house before :frowning: Mail sorters aren’t very good or careful in my area. I’m so tired of nervously waiting like this…

Hey congrats to all the new Scholars!!! I was honored to be part of the Tenth Anniversary class last year. I remember how I found out I was a scholar. It was the day before prom and I was at my boyfriends when my grandma called and told me I had a priority mail package and that I should open it in acse I need to mail something off right away. It was about 4:00 and the post office closes at 5:00. So we went over there and when I saw it my heart just stopped. I know it was stupid but I thought that Gates had mailed me back my application to send to somewhere different. Like another scholarship source. It was sent from New Mexico, the AIGC hq. So I opened that envelope, then I saw the big white envelope inside with the golden seal and I was like OMG I think I got it! I opened the envelope and there was the folder inside!!! I opened that folder and when I saw ‘Congratulations’ I was just jumping up and down saying yes!yes!yes! omg! I got it! like over and over. My grandma was right there and was like what what what? I showed her the letter and she got soooo happy. She hugged me and called everyone! She knew that the scholarship paid for everything like everything and was happy because since my grandpa passed and my niece was born money was REALLY REALLY REALLY tight. My boyfriend actually opened that first envelope for me. Cause I couldn’t face the rejection lol. He was sooo happy for me and his family was too. It was announced at prom the next day that we had two Gates Scholars and one was named Prom King. So obviously not me lol. It was cool though and I’m still thankful for this scholarship everyday. I remember calling the number and they didn’t have my id or anything. But the next week the list was posted I saw my name and then e-mails started piling on with my id and such. So don’t worry if you don’t get an id right away. Remember they have to assign these things to 1000 people!! It’ll be slowed but just soak up the prestige of being a Scholar while you wait.

Congrats to all! The Leadership Conference should be in Sept for the East and late Oct early Nov for the West. You’ll get more information. I STRONGLY encourage you guys to go. It’s sooo much fun and you meet so many new people.

PS The Monday before I found out I was a Gates Scholar I found out I was a Dell Scholar. It was great having happy news all week. Dell Scholar, Gates Scholar, prom…it was amazing! So proud of you guys and wish you best of luck in school next year! Hope someone decides to come to South Dakota School of Mines, we have a serious deficit in females and minorities!!
Hi everyone!
I’m a Gates Scholar from Las Vegas, NV!!! [African-American] I am so thankful for this blessing my heavenly father has just given me! I have been on Cloud Nine since yesterday when I first found out. I have been following this thread for about 2 weeks now and I just would like to say congrats to all of those who have received this scholarship. My heart truly does hurt for all of those who did not receive the scholarship, but you know what, don’t loose your faith because GOD has something much MUCH better planned for you, just wait and see!

**Obstinate I’ve been looking for a FB group as well, so I think you should go ahead and make it haha!

GOD BLESS!!! :)

I’m a Gates Scholar and could never be more proud. :slight_smile: I will always remember this day for the rest of my life. Congrats to those whom recieved this award. To those who didn’t, God has a plan for all of us. Do not take this as a great feat, grow from it and never cease to stop succeeding. :)

so when people ask you “how much is the gates” what do you guys say? i feel like its misleading to say a full ride. but i just say it is because i dont feel like explaining it lol

Say something like, “It’s not a specific dollar amount, but it will allow me to graduate with zero debt.”

I’m an African American female from GA…& I found out today I was A GATES Scholar…I almost cried…but, on another note, congratulations to all of you fellow scholars & for those who didnt receive it, more opportunities await you…GOOD LUCK!!!

@NYSP2010
Thank You so much! If your packet gets lost, don’t worry, I’m sure the GMS Foundation will call the 2010 Scholars by May and they will ask if they received the materials. If not, they’ll send them. Thank you again and I’ll pray for you.

@GA2012MOM
Thank you too! I know, I was stressing too much. But, thank you!

@lovetruth
Congratulations!!! I’m so happy for you!!! ;( Oh man, I’m getting teary-eyed for happiness.

@2010Here

Yea I just say, “The actual award amount is different for everyone, but it’s a full ride!” But technically you are getting a full ride by being a Gates Scholar. People asked me the SAME question today because my school mentioned that I received the award over the intercom. It’s too confusing to explain to people. haha! :)

@angel0407

can’t wait to meet you at the conference! : ) congrats!
