<p>I just created the 2010 Gates Scholars group. I encourage you all to join the group while the excitement and enthusiasm is still very fresh and new and you are perhaps looking for others to share it with. It’d also be cool to start of support groups at the various institutions we shall be attending next year, you know? Have a bit of a family unit as we head into our college years! </p>

I follow this discussion every single day waitng for someone to say “I AM A SCHOLAR!” and is excited to see many posts of the like. I was sooo nervous when I saw that I had an email with the subject “Gates Millennium Scholars” and I thought “WHAT?! IT SAYS SCHOLARS, DOES THAT MEAN I AM ONE?!” and I opened it and I saw congratulations and I just got so emotional. I called my mom and I was shaking so much that she couldn’t even understand what I said when I told her that she didn’t have to take any loans out for my education. YAAAAY!</p>

<p>My friend Matt Wilson received the scholarship a couple days ago. I think everyone knew he was going to get it. Basic 4.0 NHS president, Upward Bound wants to be a dentist…So everyones congratulating him but I think they knew he was going to get it. lol</p>
<p>I have a question though. If I plan to pursue a PhD in something like Molecular/Cellular Bio or Immunology or something along those lines (because I want to become a biomedical researcher), would Gates pay for that? I know it says it offers graduate funding for “computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science” so does mine count?</p>

<p>Congrats NYSP2010 and all the other scholars. Welcome to the family! GMS will pay for a MS and PhD in a research science degree like Molecular/Cellular Bio or Immunology or Genetics. Look for the GMS Administrative Guidelines on the website and it’ll give you all the info on the extensive areas of science they cover. Just no med, dental or pharmacy school.</p>
