Divinity School Question

My son applied to Harvard Divinity School and University of Chicago Divinity School. I am wondering–please bear with me for my naivete, graduate school is an area I know nothing about–why is full tuition at Harvard $23,544 and full tuition at University of Chicago $39,144? When we looked at colleges years ago, the private school tuition didn’t vary much from place to place, but this is such a big discrepancy that it puzzles me. I’m probably unaware of something that is obvious to you more experienced folks.

This is an interesting question, for which one might expect I would have an answer, since I am a religion professor who went to div school. But I do not have an answer.

My only insight is this: Folks usually do not pay much attention to listed tuition costs for graduate school because in general, no one pays it. The vast majority of graduate students are supported by fellowships or assistantships, which most often include full tuition remission.

^ Thanks, that makes sense. My son did receive a full tuition grant at HDS. (He has to cover most of his living expenses, however, which we are discovering can be very high in that area!)
