Do AP scores this year still matter?

So I got a 5 on AP World this year, but a lot of people I know irl are saying that apparently colleges don’t care how you did because of the remote testing? Hypothetically speaking, if someone took the same AP exam and got the same score, but a year ago (with normal testing conditions) does this mean their score would mean more to AOs than mine?

Yes, no matter how you look at it AP scores this year do matter.

A lot of people say a lot of things that mean nothing because they know nothing. Unless you know a lot of “people” who are sitting in multiple admissions office strategy sessions for the upcoming year, they don’t know anything. And that’s pretty much everyone.

AP tests have never meant a lot in college admissions. Some schools don’t even look at them. I expect that they’ll likely mean the same small amount in the future.

Their primary use is for freshman year placement (hence the name Advanced Placement) - I doubt this will be significantly impacted, though it will take some time to see if schools change their credit/placement policies.

Yes, the scores matter, but they never did matter much from an admissions standpoint.

The 33 state flagships who use AP scores for credit or placement pre-pandemic have already said they will use this year’s scores the same as the past. Take them at their word. Your fellow students don’t work in admissions and therefore have no specific insights.
