Hello, I am a current sophomore. I’ve been in the Math honor society (Mu Alpha Theta) since last year, and will be in it for all 4 years of high school. Next year, I will also join the Science honor society and hopefully be accepted into the national honor society. Do these honor societies have any bearing on college admissions?
Note: I am not joining these just for college, I am genuinely interested in being apart of theses organizations. I am just wondering if they could be important at all.
They definitely don’t hurt, especially if you become an officer. They won’t make or break your application either. Finding another activity and devoting yourself to that will look much more impressive but honors societies are a great way to show general interest in a subject
They’re the same as any other club. If you don’t actually do anything with them, they won’t help you. If you’re an active member and take advantage of the opportunities they provide (for leadership, competitions, volunteering, etc.), that looks good.
They reflect that you did well in those subjects (as do your grades). But to be an effective EC, you need to show you have accomplished something. Not just that you were in it, or were VP, but that you organized 50 hours of tutoring or organized the physics league or something.
For National Honor Society, it is a way to honor your good grades and community service and character…definitely do that because your parents will love it.
