Do I have a chance at Exeter Phillips

Hi I am from Bosnia but I live in the United States. I work hard in school and I’ve gotten straights A’s so far here are my classes:

9th grade
Geometry (usually taken during 10th grade)
Discovering Foods
Drivers Ed
English 1
World Geography
Physical Science
German 1
AVID

I have gotten A’s in all of these classes I don’t have any honors or AP classes because my school doesn’t offer that for the 9th grade. I plan on working hard to get all A’s for my 10th grade year

I don’t have any ECs because there were no clubs other than drama in my school because 9th grade was in a different building. I plan on joining as many clubs since I will be going to a real highscool for my 10th grade year. I go to Bosnia every summer and I speak Serbo-Croatian, also I’m Muslim. Does any of that give me an advantage? I haven’t taken the SSAT the ACT or the SAT I plan on trying to take them at the beginning of the school year, but I don’t think SSAT are offered in my state because I tried to apply for the test on their website and there were no locations available for any of the dates. Can I apply with only the SAT and the ACT or do I need the SSAT?

For my 10th grade year(starts in about a month) I plan on taking Honors English, German, Algebra 2, World History, business and personal finance, and AVID.

I have dual citizenship US and Bosnian. Also when do you apply I’ve heard between October and January.

On the geographic diversity front, being a Bosnian CITIZEN should help you. Did you relinquish your Bosnian citizenship when you moved to the U.S.? If so, then you will be considered an American domestic applicant, no matter how many summer vacations you spend there.

You mentioned that the SSAT is not offered in your state. If you reside in a state that is under-represented at a school, then that could also help you stand out from the crowd of applicants. I suggest you look at the school websites to find out what states their students hail from.

Every school has its own policy on what tests can be substituted for the SSAT. Do NOT assume that all schools have the same rules for ANYTHING, any more than your friends’ parents have the same rules as your parents…

I was born in Bosnia so I automatically got Bosnian citizenship I moved to the U.S when I was 2 and got U.S citizenship from my mom. I renewed my Bosnian passport this summer and I have an American passport also. I am almost positive that my state is under-represented since I’m not not many people from North Dakota go there. I have also been to about a dozen countries does that help at all?

Apply as an int’l applicant w Bosnian citizenship, residing in North Dakota. It won’t guarantee admission, but it will at least get your application a second look.

Having visited a dozen countries is not exceptional. Many int’l applcants have been to many dozens, not just one dozen…

I will also when do you apply is it between January and October?

Application deadline for most top schools is mid-January. As you will need recs from your present teachers, it makes sense to let them get to know you for at least a few months before they fill out the rec form.

Check the school’s website for application process details

Alright thanks for the info. I have one more question though. Do you think my chances are hurt a lot because I don’t really have any ECs?

I think your biggest challenge is trying to get admitted as a Junior. There are much fewer spaces available for new Juniors. Consider applying as a Repeat Sophomore-- in fact, in your interview, this is an issue you should discuss. Your interviewer should be able to give you some pragmatic guidance on this.

For EC’s it is not necessary to join a gazillion clubs. Pick an activity or two (sport, club, musical instrument, community service) and do it well.

In my school we usually take the SAT and ACT during our junior years. Can you request to take it earlier or have to do something else?

Your school does not administer the SAT; an organization called the College Board does. You can take the test ANY TIME it is administered.

As for the SSAT. If it is not offered in North Dakota in the time period you wish to take the test, then I suggest your family take you to an adjacent state to do it. We had to fly to ANOTHER COUNTRY for S to take the SSAT, so driving a few hours by car is no big deal by comparison.

If you are serious about wanting to get into one of these elite schools, then you need to do what it takes

Thank you for helping me answer my question regarding my chances for being accepted into Exeter. There is one thing that I’m still confused about. Is the SSAT required to apply for Exeter or can other test work. I looked at the application form on the Exeter website and it said I could take the PSAT, ISEE, or the SAT reasoning test. While looking on other websites it said that the SSAT is required. Also I’ve searched on these forums for a while and everyone on these forums applying to Exeter has taken the SSAT. If the SSAT is absolutely required I will take it. Do you know if I could apply with the PSAT only? Thank you again for helping me I really appreciate it.

It is OK to pick up the telephone and make a voice call to the Exeter admissions office to **get the answers directly from the source. **

Do not rely on internet bulletin board advice for answers to critical, school-specific questions

The sense I have gotten from a number of schools is that SSAT is required for students entering 9th and 10th grade, but other standardized tests (PSAT, SAT) are acceptable for older students. I believe Exeter has that information on the website, but nothing wrong with calling or emailing with a specific question like that. I just checked the website, and there seems to be a problem with the link about testing. Contact the school and ask.
