Do I really have a reason to whine about my situation in high school?

Okay guys so I am an Asian American male. I had to live in a small deep south town because that is where my parent’s job was. Unfortunately, I am not an East Asian male but a South Asian male (Asian Indian).

I have lived in this deep south town since 8th grade. In the 8th grade I was bullied and stomped on by many kids because they wanted me to go back to my own country, I ignored them but it didn’t work.

For high school I went to a magnet school where classes were extremely difficult. The only courses offered were honors courses and I had just learned to speak English fluently when I finished the 8th grade. I did not get bullied much in high school but the difficult course work kept me down. I ended up having a 2.8 GPA at the end of my sophomore year. I have a 3.2 GPA right now and I am a senior, guidance counselor told me that I can graduate with a 3.6 GPA if I make ALL A’s this year.

My SAT score is an 1840 right now.

I see kids up in Connecticut having an easy life and everything that sometimes I wish I was in there shoes. I wish sometimes that I was the poor kid growing up in NY because I know that life would not have been that rough.

Do I really have a reason to whine about my situation?

Perhaps you could write in your essay about overcoming adversities, both with bullies during middle school and the difficulties you faced during high school.

But I wouldn’t recommend outright complaining about it.

No not really. When you get older you’ll be thankful you’ve not had such a soft life because it makes you stronger and wiser.

Your scores are also perfectly acceptable and will get you into a lot of good colleges.

“their” shoes not “there” shoes - not picking on you, just helping if you choose to write about it

Life isn’t easier in Connecticut; it presents different challenges.

Sounds like you have a good essay topic. I wish you the best.

**their (now I know why people make all these typos)

Anyways, how much can an essay topic really help you in terms of college admissions?
Also what are some universities I should start looking at?

You might enjoy a college campus where there are other students who share your heritage. Here in Silicon Valley, there are many Indian families. I think that’s probably true of other tech-oriented areas like Seattle, as well.
As to your larger point, you get what you get in terms of your family circumstances. There is no point in lamenting your fate. Be glad you are smart and you have gotten through the tough times. You are the kind of person who will appreciate college and make the most of the opportunity ahead of you.

thanks silicon valley mom

I hope to get that 4.0 in college.

Similar ordeal, I’m thinking of somehow mentioning it but contrasting it

Hmm I feel ya. Anyways, I have college to look forward to.

No offense dude but in my opinion you have no reason to complain. deep south town? there is nothing wrong with the south, there are places in the north just as bad as anything you would find in the south. Difficulties because your not from this country? your not the only one, hundredths of people face the same challenge and still manage to do better than people that were born here. If you weren’t going to be able to handle the high school you attend, you would have never gotten in. The only thing i do agree with you about is the bullying from the racist kids, i went through it too.

lol, NO, hundreds of foreigners do not get stomped on, they may get called names but not to the extent I got called names and bullied
