I applied to the Annenberg school of communications as a Broadcast Journalism Major. I realize that I’m a long shot…but could you give me your opinion on my chances for admission. How much does diversity play in admissions?

your GPA goes down when you weight it? you must’ve really messed something up lol. I know that’s prolly a switch up.

You’re an URM (under represented minority), so your chances are much better than you think, if you get your SAT up to like an 1800 I think you have a good shot surprisingly, and strong essays/ECs are important for communications, so that should help. Even if you don’t score amazing on the SAT, if it improves, I think your shot is far from a miracle, but I wouldn’t call it a match. I’d say with current stats you have like a 20-30% chance of being admitted, and closer to 50-60% if you get that SAT up to a more competitive score like 1800

oh and to answer your question about diversity in admissions. Being black is a huge benefit, Looking at last year’s admits of the ones accepted in January (meaning the were nominated for scholarships, so far beyond the average admit.) all scores were 2190+ or 33 ACT+, except for one that was a 29 ACT, and s/he was an URM (black), so those kind of stats for a scholarship prove to me that admittance isn’t a too far of a reach, especially if you improve that SAT.

really? 1800? u think so? i have an 1850 and i applied before the dec. 1st deadline. however on my app, i had an 1800 cuz it went up in december but i resent those scores. also i was thinking…(i didnt get into NYU, my first choice…USC used to be my first choice)…but if i want to transfer to USC with a 4.1 w in hs…would i have a good chance?

oh yeah and u shud definitely get ur sat score up but i think u said u already applied so basically ur done with testing? the lowest sat score ive heard of someone getting in is 1750 or sumthing around there. however, u can always transfer from community and get in…or have a waaaay better chance.

usc is a reach but with a good essay, and how you present yourself to usc is a bigger factor good luck
does usc accept SAT or ACT if we take in jan 2010?

well i sent an essay that tells a lot about how ive lived and grown up with my parent’s business. but i wish i had done my other one that was how i treat special ed kids. altho the one i submitted is the one i chose becuz i made it where i want to be part of the trojan family, and thats how ive grown up: with my family. idk im 99% sure i wont get in lol but its a lot like NYU and i would have a good chance there. they are both similar in the sense that they offer alternatives if u have lower scores…NYU - u can go to liberal studies program…where u dont get into ur major but u take general ed classes…USC-get accepted to spring semester.

mid 50% for USC is ~1910-2200, 28-33 for ACT, so 1800 isn’t too far below the mid 50%, and 1850 is even better. Obviously your chances are better with higher test scores, but there has to be a decent amount of lower test scores to make up that lower 25%.

okay thanx. ur very optimistic : ] altho i still dont think id get in lol i was also lookin back at my application, not that this will affect my chances tremendously, but i put my book title as “mistake were made” instead of mistakeS were made. hmm…maybe if for some reason they like my whole trojan family incorporation then ill get in. i also applied for the hardest major probably soo that wont help : /

I’m in a similar situation, so…I feel like there may be some hope in the world, even though it’s a kind of small ray of hope.
Hm, I don’t know, everyone else’s stats always seem better than mine, but…I think it’s still worth a try. I’m going with the “you’ll never know if you don’t try” perspective.

I’m relying on (hopefully good) essays, the whole “showing interest” thing, and my SAT scores, which aren’t totally amazing, but they’re solid in the mid-50%. Come to think of it, I’d love if it were 220 points higher, but…can’t get everything and I’m terrible at writing those essays in 25 minutes.

I don’t mean to be so useless in giving chances, but I feel just as lost as you.
And I’m hoping they want diversity, but I have a strange mix of ethnicities…part over-represented minority, part under-represented minority (I’m guessing), and part white. However they take that. I guess I’m diverse within myself already.

Replace the word “Weighted” with Cumulative and the word Unweighted with “Current” lol. I had a terrible Sophomore year, but other than that my grades have been pretty decent. I’ve been preparing for the Janaury SAT(USC takes them up until March) with the Valedictorian of my school, so im trying hard. MY essay was about how I started an all day event at my school, to benefit pediatric cancer.

btw I also made the FATAL mistake of applying to Notre Dame EA…with the scores I currently have…and was denied. I WASNT expecting to get in at all UNTIL the office of minority recruitment called me 2 weeks before I received my decision and got my hopes up.

Learn to read

Don’t be such an ass and then make yourself look like one by means of your reading skills, or apparent lack there of

I’m not sure that you can say we are dumb when you don’t read, and then get mad at us for criticizing your rude and incorrect remarks. Regardless, you will never know if you don’t apply so go for it!

USC is a reach for you, even with your URM status, but if you wrote some great essays and proved that you belong in the class of 2014 then you do have a chance.

Annenberg is a very competitive school. I’m nervous too. Good luck to a fellow URM applicant. :)
