Do SAT scores matter at UVA? Is grading done on a curve?

He is a very hard worker with a weighted GPA of 4.21 but struggles with standardized tests (1560 in SAT, and scored 2’s and 3’s in AP exams). Plans to pursue a doctorate in medicine. Got accepted to UVA, Duke, Vanderbilt and W&M, opted to attend UVA.

I’m shocked that anyone could get in with a 1560 SAT. Did he have other outstanding parts of his app?

Is that 1560 CR+M? The AP test scores are considered for credit and course placement but not admissions.

The psych classes grade on a curve sometimes, I know pre-med is very competitive at UVA

@FCCDAD You sure they don’t consider them for placement? I heard that top schools look at them as a standardized test to judge your AP class grade by.

“Students should have their AP score reports sent directly to the Office of Admission at the University (College Code 5820) in the summer following the senior year of high school.”

(The summer following the senior year of high school is long after the admissions decisions have been made.)

Yes, they do consider AP test scores for credit and placement.
“We generally give credit for scores of 4 or 5 on any of the AP exams.”
“The University’s undergraduate schools often award advanced standing (course exemption and academic credits) or advanced placement (course exemption without credits), to entering students, for qualifying scores on a variety of advanced examinations taken prior to matriculation at the University or at another college.”
“The awarding of advanced standing or advanced placement is determined by the faculty. Faculty members from the relevant academic departments regularly perform reviews of subject curricula, subject examinations, grade distributions, and marking schemes provided by various examination agencies. After reviewing such materials, and in consultation with the appropriate dean’s office, faculty members make informed judgments about what credit, if any, is to be awarded.”
“The University of Virginia participates in the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program by awarding advanced standing or advanced placement to entering students who have made specified scores on AP tests”

(Entering students have already been admitted. They are no longer applicants.)

No, they do not consider AP test scores for admission.
Yes, they do consider your grades in AP classes, and the rigor of taking AP classes, for admission.

Please don’t just trust random strangers on the internet, though - at least not about anything important. Contact the admissions office and ask them directly. I’m sure they will give you the honest answer straight up.

We definitely look at AP (and IB) exam scores, if a student reports them.

The official AP score report doesn’t have to be sent until a student decides to matriculate.

There ya go. Better answer than I could find.

Awesome. And, as far as admissions go, there is no benefit to sending an official score report until admitted?

You must send an official score report for SAT, ACT, and SAT II testing.

You self-report AP or IB testing on the Common Application.
