I know a couple of years ago when I was on the tour with my S the guide said they were in the process of putting AC into all of the old dorms. Does anyone know if that ever happened? Thanks.

The timing on this thread is funny. I was just talking to some alumni who lived in old dorms who thought adding AC was an unnecessary expense.
So it appears from this article that some of the old dorms now have AC. Is that correct?
It is an expensive and complicated project that is being done in phases over a few years. One of the reasons why it was not done sooner was because it was so hard to figure out how to add central air through so many cinderblock walls. They don’t have enough excess housing capacity to close down too many buildings at once, to do the work at one time. I believe elevators are also being added, and other amenities.
In any case, air conditioning is not necessary during the vast majority of the school year in Cville. I lived for four years during the academic year in Cville - and I only had air conditioning during one of those years. During the few hot afternoons, you can find a place on grounds with AC to study.
AC is needed if you will be living in Cville during the summer. The windows in the old dorms are huge - there is room for two standard-sized fans. There is also plenty of shade around the Old Dorms.
