Do volunteer hours at your own school count?

This summer I decided to do volunteer hours; the problem was, as an athlete, I have inflexible yet always changing schedules. Since I don’t have summer school this summer, I thought that volunteering at my school (in lieu of summer school) would be a great way to get a bunch of hours while still fulfilling my athletic obligations.

The administrator that arranged these hours for me said that yes, these volunteer hours do count for college applications. However, after a quick Google search, I’ve been unable to find anywhere that either recommends for or against volunteer at your own school. It seems unlikely that I’m the first person to seriously consider this route, so I thought that - maybe - it was a well-known fact (to everyone except me) that volunteering at school does not count.

My question is, would these volunteer hours count if I do them at my own high school? Or, more specifically, how would these hours appear in the eyes of an Admissions officer for a big-name university? Would an Admissions officer simply roll his eyes and trash my application when he sees a hundred hours done at my school?

If it makes any difference, the volunteering that I will be doing will be me assisting the Activities Principal’s office (presumably with paperwork, and as a gopher), and then assisting the faculty in setting up registration.

If this is in the wrong section, I apologize.

It counts
