Do you carry proof of citizenship when riding the bus on a domestic trip?

@skieurope I don’t know what happened, my comment had none of those things in it and I was unable to delete it from my end. It was just stuck.

I’ve had the website flaky sometimes where I couldn’t post anything, but that hasn’t been the case for me recently.

Without seeing the message, I can only speculate. Sometimes when the system is overwhelmed, there is also an error message that a message can’t be posted, but usually the second time it works.

Can we move back to the topic at hand please?

According to the article in our newspaper the other day, folks currently have until 10/1/2920 to get Real IDs for air travel and to enter federal buildings. Passports work, as do state IDs with the star or the driver’s license with the star.

As of 1/18/2018, our state says folks can only have the star put on EITHER their DLicense OR their state ID, but not both. If you have a star put on your state ID, you can only get a limited use DL with NO star.

Well I’m utterly confused. My drivers licence has a star. But we are a State that is NOT real ID complaint and was one of the states to have to get an extension.

I have an up to date British passport and my old grandfathered in green card so I’m ok. Told my husband he needs to get his US passport renewed ASAP just to be on the safe side.

There are 5 states who put stars (black or gold) on their licenses but are not in compliance: Idaho, Louisiana, NC, NH, and Michigan. The article doesn’t say why (if they were in compliance and then weren’t? if they jumped the gun?)

Yes, an up to date passport that shows you are a US citizen is always a good thing. H has a current fed govt ID that he can also use as a retired fed govt worker.

I believe my new license will have a black star in a gold circle in the upper right hand corner of my license as Real ID.

I am in one of those five states, I have a star, and I am real ID compliant. My state made it voluntary. You get a star if you’re compliant, you get the phrase “not to be used as federal ID” if you’re not.

Such a sad story. I hope he manages to stay. He had a temporary work permit!

I keep thinking of how Melania worked in the US for 2+ months before she had a work visa. If she didn’t divulge that on her green card application could she be deported now? How ironic if ICE shows up at the White House. Not that I want that to happen, but when you’re a stickler for details, you’re a stickler for details.

I did not see how he could be employed by Point University as it did not mention a work permit in the article I read. A ‘temporary’ work permit that has lasted for over 15 years, after two orders of deportation?

I know I had a green card so the rules might be different for Work visa’s, but my employer only asked for my green card when I was hired, they have never asked for proof that it was renewed.

I read a different article that said he originally was on a student visa, then an H-1b visa, and then switched back to a student visa. Then in 2003 he self deported (after an order) to Bangladesh, and then returned on a student visa. He later dropped out of his PhD program. Since 2011 he’s been on several orders of deportation but got a stay. He was supposed to check in and didn’t always do it. I don’t know how or why they issued a work permit to him on an expired visa.

Another report of ICE boarding an Amtrak train to check for citizenship.

ICE would have a field day on any of my commuter buses. I don’t even want to bet (because I will win) that at least a third of pax onthe bus are either a work visa or green card holders.

If they are green card/work permit holders, what would the problem be? They are required to show the documents whenever asked.

Here is the problem… The other 2/3 of pax look about the same and/or speak with an accent. Are they required to show proof of identity and citizenship?

“If they are green card/work permit holders, what would the problem be? They are required to show the documents whenever asked.”

Because those of us who care about our civil liberties don’t want to live in an overreaching police state. They are asking without cause.

^I think the issue is that it is a very slippery slope.

I could see having to have your identity verified at certain locations: DMV, doctors office etc. But to do it so brazenly out in public is…startling. Isn’t there something about “probable cause” in the law?

For now it’s “just” an ID verification on a bus or train, but who knows what will it be tomorrow? Is there more being done than just an ID verification? Even if an immigrant shows proper documentation could they still be detained?
