I’m fascinated by all of the different part time jobs, and in awe of all the energy.
“Side hustle” makes me think of a con - as in the old Robert Redford/Paul Newman movie “The Sting.” Some new slang I have trouble using.

Sometimes I do fused art glass workshops mostly for scouts and homeschoolars but I just charge enough to cover my expenses. Up until last year we had a booth at our town’s annual Christmas fair. My son blows glass and we’d do the booth together he’d sell his stuff and demo on the torch. It was a fun thing to do as family.
DD calls DS a “money magnet” he’s always making money here and there. One year he gave his music teacher a glass heart necklace, she showed it off the teachers and aids at the local elementary schools and before he knew it he had orders for 20+ heart necklaces two weeks before Valentine’s Day. He’s does a lot of tutoring, the head GC often reccomends him, he charges $30 an hour (one hour minimum and then bills by the quater hour after that) and no one here even blinks an eye at that rate! This week he has 3 tutoring appointments.
That sounds interesting.Could you share more info? Thank you.
Oops, the consumer consultant in medical research studies sounds interesting. Could you share more info, thank you.
^^^ @Nan0003 is your coment about my post #41 if so, what other info do you want?
@3scoutsmom, thank you. I’ m interested in consumer consultant in medical research. Sorry for confusion!
I’m retired, but I’ve got a very part time job doing the same thing I did when I was fully employed - writing technical documents in my specialized field. I’ve dabbled in making hand painted walking sticks and could probably make some money at it if I was more motivated. I’ve given all away all the nice ones I made as gifts or donated them to charity auctions - one sold for over $100. I also spent a year researching and making a poster map of China with place names translated into English (like Beijing means "Northern capital, Shanghai means “above the sea”, etc). I only sold enough to pay for the cost of printing a thousand of them. I still have about 400 copies in my basement - I definitely had some marketing problems. After painting the lines on my kid’s backyard basketball court, I’ve thought about doing that as a side hustle for home/driveway and outdoor basketball courts. It was pretty complicated and I think I could do it well, but I haven’t put that idea into action either.
@mathmom Love the painting! I love looking at aerial photos. See my new avatar for a sample of my failed map project.
I am recently retired and I could continue freelance editorial work for my previous employer, I am not interested.
I have always made jams and jelly and in the last two years I have been making a great hot pepper jelly. My D’s boyfriend loves the stuff and gave a jar to his Dad who has a small mom-and-pop general store. His Dad loved it and asked me if I wanted to sell in his store. I figured–why not? I gave him 10 pint jars that sold in a week. Dad wants more fir the store. I have been having fun with it so I will make more. Not sure where it will go,but it has got me thinking if I want to take this to a different level.
@LeastComplicated I’m addicted to maps too.
@Bromfield2 I LOVE your side hustle! Making jam…you and Olivia Pope. (you have to be a Scandal watcher to get that one!)
I’m mad at my husband because he has let GPS take all the fun out of road trips. I used to be the map reading navigator! That was my job!
@LeastComplicated if you like historical maps this is a wonderful collection: https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/allCollections
@mathmom Thanks! Got it bookmarked - I’ll give it a look tomorrow!
@Bromfield2 Do you live in a state with easygoing food safety prep laws? i know they can really vary but some states make it an onerous process.
Yes, there are regulations and I have met the requirements for a residential kitchen, which limits where you can sell. I need to decide if I want to rent space in a commercial kitchen.
My side hustle can definitely be referred to as gigs: my hobby is playing trumpet, and even though it happens quite often, I’m still astounded when I get paid for it. It’s so much fun, I feel like I should be the one paying.
@bromfield2 I see Shark Tank in your future. (Mr. Wonderful would you like to make an investment in my jam/jelly business?)
I’m not that ambitious–I’m just recently retired and having fun.
@Nan0003, I am involved in a lot of patient advocacy, locally and nationally. One of the national organizations I am friendly with asked me if I’d be willing to be a consumer advocate on scientific research studies and if I wanted to apply. It’s the CDMRP.army.mil. They award many grants in an array of different fields for lots of different medical researchers. Top researchers from places all over the world apply and some of them sit on panels with consumers, practicing providers and other researchers.
It’s fascinating. I’ve also participated to a lesser extent in pcori.org.
Both of these programs are funded by Congress to award medical research grants to the tune of millions of dollars with consumer input. For CDMRP, you have to be nominated by a national organization that you have some connection to, while with PCORI you can volunteer and be selected.
The compensation is nominal but can include travel expenses.
