Do you have a uniform, i.e. an outfit you gravitate towards and feel most comfortable in? Something you wear that feels like a second skin? Think Steve Jobs and his classic Levis and black turtleneck. Obviously some people have to wear suits for work, etc. but I am thinking about the times you can wear whatever you want. What do you gravitate towards? This summer I am favoring dark cropped or gaucho pants with cotton print tops. In winter I gravitate towards dark jeans and sweaters. And I have an unexplicable addiction to black sandals and boots.
Can’t tell if this is a fashion rut or freedom from constant daily wardrobe decisions. Since I am blessed to work from home, it doesn’t affect anyone but me. There are many fine articles on this subject, but I am curious to know what your uniform might look like.
They say most ppl only wear 10% of their wardrobe. I am one of them. I’m in Socal so it’s Jeans, tank top and lightweight cardigan everywhere I go, except summer then I switch over to camisoles and maxis and cardigan.
I don’t care much about fashion and place a huge premium on being comfortable. Fortunately, I’m at a stage in life where I don’t have to worry about impressing anyone but myself.
converse, comfortable cotton pants, long sleeve solid color tees.
When I can be comfy, jeans and a college t-shirt. I have lots of them. When it is chilly, Title Nine cold weather workout pants, college t-shirt, and a hoodie. I have a beloved ratty periwinkle hoodie that I wear only in the house ($20 at Sears at least 10 years ago, and I bet I put it on at least for a little while 300 days a year). Have been looking for a replacement, but no luck yet. I have more presentable ones for in public.
Around the house – gym shorts and t-shirt, or sweatpants and t-shirt in the winter.
Running around town – Levi’s and polo.
Work – black or gray slacks, sleeveless print top, [url=<a href=“http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/halogen-three-quarter-sleeve-cardigan-regular-petite/3320328%5DHalogen”>http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/halogen-three-quarter-sleeve-cardigan-regular-petite/3320328]Halogen 3/4 sleeve sweater/url ).
Now that I am retired, I am essentially living in yoga pants, flats, Lululemon and similar tops, typically with a little jacket over them for when I’m not at a gym. I don’t even wear my old uniform, jeans and a cardigan, much anymore.
Winter:
Work: Above the knee dress(think Athleta),black tights, cardigan, ankle boots or flats.
Home: Yoga/running pants, t-shirt, loose 3/4 sleeve dri-fit type top or 1/4 zip, athletic shoes.
Out: Skinny jeans, flat ankle boots, t-shirt, MAYBE a 3/4 sleeve pullover sweater
Summer:
Work: Comfy dress, skirt or skort EVERYDAY! Nothing on my legs! All summer! Lightweight 3/4 sleeve cardigan for AC, mix of flats/sandals
Home: Eddie Bauer shorts or exercise shorts, Life Is Good T, Keens, Ahnu’s or lightweight athletic shoes.
Out: Athleta type skort, sleeveless or capped tshirt, shoes as above ^^^!
In warm weather I like chicos or jjill ankle length or long capris with nicer tshirts from those stores. In winter I started wearing more looser dressy looking leggings with either long sleeve stretchy cotton tops, lightweight sweaters and cardigans. Stretch is my friend when I’m just casual.
When I was in jjill the sales woman was saying something like, I know you just wear solids…and I didn’t even realize that. Yup, solid pants, solid shirts with a necklace and snazzy shoes.
I also have work clothes and going out clothes but given my choice I have my go to uniform. My big difference from Steve jobs…I wear colorful shirts.
Work outfit: a basic stretchy Max Mara or DVF dress with tights or leggings (bare legs in summer!) and boots or chunky heel/wedge pumps, plus a cardigan if the weather calls for it.
Casual outfit: leggings/tunic and Tod’s.
Home outfit: a plush robe and Oofos. If guests come, I put on a work or casual outfit.
I guess I wear a variety of things. Casual winter (at home) I wear hoodies and athletic pants or jeans. Summer- running shorts or running skirts and t-shirts or tank tops. Really wear my Nuu Muu running dresses a lot for casual (over legging, capris, bike-style track shorts or jeans) with various shirts or jackets over them. Cowboy boots, Birkenstocks or other sandals.
Work- usually JCrew or Limited ankle pants with flats or wedge sandals, some sort of shirt and a blazer or wrap for when I get cold. Have casual dresses, too. Winter I wear tights with boots or ankle boots and dresses or sweaters/skirts.
I’m a huge fan of the uniform. My uniform is an ankle length sleeveless scoop neck dress, with a matching mid calf length sleeveless button up vest and over that a matching long sleeved, button up, collared jacket that hits just below the knee. For summer I have this 3 piece combo in black/white stripe seersucker, dotted black voile, cotton gauze tiny black/white check… nine pieces I can mix and match at home or for travel. I have the jacket in a small herringbone wool/linen mix that I can use as an overpiece when I go someplace cooler than where I live. If I ever get warm, I can take off the jacket. I wear my summer uniform with a large brimmed straw hat with black ribbon, black sandals, black leather boston bag style handbag.
When I take off my uniform, I put on either a black/white cotton caftan or a black silk robe,
I wear a black apron when I clean. I have some old overalls and a couple of college tees if I’m painting something or using bleach.
99 1/2 % of my closet is black or black/white and the black/white is really only for summer.
