In college, some of my fraternity brothers laughed about the fact that I always wore khakis and a starched white shirt. I wear that less often, but for a semi-dress occasion I do like to wear khakis, a white shirt, a blue blazer and a tie. My wife calls it my pledge uniform.
I haven’t talked much about my shoes…Came back with 8 new pair of shoes from Italy recently, leather feels like butter. Who knew flats could come in so many colors and styles.
For many years I wore black, black and black, mostly because it was easy. But as we get older, black really doesn’t look so good. I like to wear dresses in the summer, because they are easy. I got out of that habit for a couple of years, but I’m buying new ones this year. I actually wore one dress this summer that I bought while I was on maternity leave after having my second child, 20 years ago. I’m seriously considering wearing another from that same period soon.
Recently I’ve been seriously craving a certain iconic handbag and couldn’t figure out why. It’s not my style. It doesn’t go with my clothes. It’s not in my budget. But I really felt like I needed it and debated getting one while traveling recently but managed to restrain myself.
Finally I figured out what was up. This is the bag from my childhood memory of grandmothers. It was part of a grandmother uniform. Now I am going to be a grandmother I just felt I needed a grandmother bag and that was it. I think I’m not getting it, but I’m not positive yet. At least I understand what is up and that is a relief.
Does anyone imagine they will dress differently as a grandmother than as a mother???
Nope. I am going to be a cool grandma.
I don’t imagine I will dress differently, but I fear it…the floral with matching overlay chiffon sets, with button-tab pearl earrings and a bigger-than clutch, but not as big as a side-bag leather purse with barrel-shaped-metal-button closure.
Shaking.
@alh no one in my family has started dressing differently since becoming a grandmother. But jeans and t-shirts or sweaters is pretty much the universal uniform in my family
I think my grandmamas (and their sisters) were pretty cool. I have been remembering bright red nails and lipstick, fancy cigarette cases, gold lighters, and elegant handbags and shoes. I am not going to start smoking. I may have to get a fur. lol.
I don’t think i will dress differently just because I’m a grandparent, but I do consider my age when I dress.
I think what happens is that our “uniforms” turn into grandma-wear. So our children and grandchildren look at our outfits and think “Grandma.”
Just like names – only people over 70 are named Mildred, Gladys and Ethel; only people younger than 15 are named Ashley and Madison.
“… bright red nails and lipstick, fancy cigarette cases, gold lighters, and elegant handbags and shoes.”
Oh, those grandmothers. Yes, that does evoke an era of cool.
My god, that’s depressing…
When I die, I hope my wardrobe will be a coveted part of my estate.
When my sister became a grandmother five years ago, she suddenly started wearing appliqued sweatshirts. Cats and lighthouses and such. It was almost as if she felt her new station in life required a new uniform.
@oneofthosemoms, you made me remember something. When I had my kids, my mom would sometimes shop for them at the Disney store, and she wore lots of Disney sweatshirts. I think I stull have a couple she bought me during that phase.
Someone please put me out of my misery when I start wearing sweatshirts with cat & lighthouse appliqués on them.
You have not seen the cat appliquéd Gucci sweaters?! Cats are all the rage this season!
I don’t feel like I wear a uniform. I have a lot of variety (I think?) in my clothing. Now that it is summer, I wear pants or capris (cotton with some stretch, or jeans in blue but also other colors), fashionable tank tops and short sleeve tops, lots of skirts, sundresses, casual dresses and some nicer than casual or somewhat dressed up. I wear all sorts of sandals…some are flats, some have small heels and some medium heels for dressier occasions. Flats too. In winter, I wear all sorts of pants and jeans, various styles of sweaters and long sleeve tops, dresses with tights, tunic dresses with leggings, skirts with tops/sweaters, ankle boots mostly but also other shoes and I have tall boots but don’t wear those much. I like the variety.
If I am just hanging at home, I may wear leggings or capri leggings with tops, or very casual knit dresses/tunics, sometimes with leggings too. My “treat” when home alone is going braless.
My wardrobe has really narrowed dramatically since I’ve retired. But no cat sweatshirts :-).
I forgot…part of my winter uniform…a scarf. I have a bunch of them…and wear one almost everyday.
My winter wardrobe is more of a uniform than my summer clothes. In winter for work I wear dark color pants , a sweater and boots. Casual is jeans, sweater and boots. I tend to wear solid colors, my wardrobe has almost no prints or patterns except for some striped tops/ sweaters.
