I have relatives like you @somemom and what they do is basically have a “standing gift order” for the people they know will inevitably buy them gifts. My sister gets a Jo Malone grapefruit candle from me, the Sephora mascara variety pack from my other, and some Wolford opaque black hose from my mom every year. That’s what she wants and she counts on it. She loves knowing exactly what she will get, and if I substituted, say, a Diptyque candle she’d be very bummed. Her first choice would be “no gifts,” but to her this is the next best thing. The funny thing is she gets very excited and happy about getting what she wants.
