Do you like your Memory Foam Mattress?

(stevensmama – we are all getting old(er))

stevensmama, how old is your mattress? Ours is about 8 years old and has taken some serious beating (D jumping, “older” people being a bit frisky…) but still feels as good as new. If the kitten had not peed on it, it would have looked as good as new, too (Billy, thank you for Oxyclean).

Stevesmama, what a lemon you got! I would be annoyed, especially given how much they cost. We’ve had ours now quite a few years and love it to pieces. We actually found it a bit ‘stiff’ at the outset, but its just puuurfect for us now (the mattress and the pillows!). I feel like it will last forever, but maybe I’m mistaken.

Starbright, our king-size Tempurpedic is about 15 years old. It’s still okay but the foam is much less supportive than it used to be. I’m ready for a new one but probably won’t be able to afford it until we’re finished paying for college tuition!

It’s not quite 5 years old. We’re moving a year from now, and that mattress is history! We’d ditch it now but we want to move up to a king-size, which won’t fit in our bedroom here. We’re not exactly lightweights (160 and 240 :frowning: ), but I expected the mattress to hold up better than that.

I hated my tempurpedic when we first got it because it was so stiff. My husband loved it though, so I just bought a twin size down mattress pad and I was more comfortable.

But, now that we’ve had it a few years, my side has loosened up quite a bit and I love it.

I don’t know if it was worth the money, I kind of wish we’d gotten a Select Comfort. I’ve slept on many of those in hotels and they seem to be perfect for either my husband or me.

I am so glad that we did not get a Tempurpedic. Our mattress was shot and we were forced to buy a new one. We were both developing back and shoulder issues from our old mattress. Friends of ours recentlly spent a small fortune on the Tempurpedic after researching it for years. The H likes it and the W hated it at first but grew to like it. I tried it out in a mattress store and I already could tell that I was really not going to like it. I was able to talk DH out of it and I am very happy with our purchase of a conventional mattress.

I recently bought a Novaform Pure Comfort Grand memory foam mattress manufactured by
Sleep Innovations and sold through Costco. The mattress is very firm when I first lie down, but the memory foam softens as it adjusts to my body temperature. So far, the Novaform is a wonderful night’s sleep, but so was the Ikea Sultan innerspring mattress that it replaced (gave it to my daughter for her college apartment), and that one was nearly 20 years old.

love my tempapedic (sp) they say its takes a little adjusting at first, I had no issues. still love it and have had it for about 7 years.

I am restarting this thread- cause I really need a new mattress.
We have had a queen bed- which is about 20 years old and it was not top of the line when we got it- however our bedroom furniture is from my great aunt and the bed is a double, so we have just been using a metal adjustable frame for support.

I am looking at the tempur-pedic beds, but the ones I would want to try, with the HD foam and flex support don’t come in double so I guess we could stay with the queen size. ( but also tiny bedroom and any inches we can spare are good- both H & I are not huge * and getting smaller all the time apparently*- when we were young, we slept in a twin bed!- well we * were* young  )

I am sending for the info DVD, and will try them out. However, um another poster mentioned that while the foam might work well for sleeping, for other activities not so much. ( Perhaps why you don’t see water beds as much anymore)

The Tempur-pedic sounds pretty good, but I am also wondering about how much outgassing there is and if you buy one that doesn’t have to be flipped ( since it looks like they are really heavy), if that really works.

Our Tempurpedic was just delivered this morning - we are very excited. We analyzed, debated, talked to friends, tried them out in the store, etc. We moved up from a Queen to a CA King - a full King really wouldn’t work in our bedroom.

Um… we’ll do the research and report back - anything for my CC buddies ;)

Reporting back about our all-natural latex mattress http://www.habitatfurnishings.com/latex_mattress.html</a>
now that we have had it for almost a year: I think it’s great. As I mentioned earlier, it took a few days to get used to it. But my back and hips are happy with the purchase.I also like that there are no petrochemicals or other materials that could cause “out gassing.”

Every time this thread gets “bumped” I comment. We’ve had our Tempurpedic for 7 years…and it’s still as terrific as the day we bought it. No sags, no low spots, no lumps, still comfortable…we love it…and are so glad we made the purchase.

Outgassing??? The child within me is ROFL. I have been following this thread with interest since our Kingsdown King mattress has developed quite a mountain in the middle and every time my DH rolls over in bed, the entire bed shakes me awake. I looked at the temperpedic website but I am confused. There seems to be so many varieties of temperpedic mattress these days. Which one is the one that you guys all love???

I bought a Tempur Pedic “Grand Bed” about two years ago to replace a Sealy Posturepedic. I wanted to re-evaluate the entire mattress issue because I was starting to wake in the morning sore, stiff and still tired. Also, my arms and legs often fell asleep at intervals throughout the night, waking me up.

I heard that memory foam mattresses support the body and in effect, reduce one’s weight, although neither of us is overweight. The Temper Pedic did take some getting used to. I was mostly bothered by its odd smell for the first week or two. It also seemed very hard and non-springy. However, after two years, I get a fantastic night’s sleep - I rarely wake to reposition and the problem of limbs falling asleep is completely gone.

The mattress was pricey - in the 7K range for a king, and it is very heavy - so much so that it is difficult to tuck the sheet and blanket between the mattress and the box spring. The box spring is not necessary - it’s really just a platform that raises the bed to a certain level, which I needed because I still wanted to use my very beautiful mahogany bed frame. Now, when I stay in a hotel, I’m surprised at how uncomfortable the bed is compared with my bed at home, even at hotels known for their comfortable mattresses such as a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton. I am very happy with my choice and I do think that it is a healthy alternative to a traditional mattress.

seiclan - we got the Rhapsody. we went to the showroom twice and spent a lot of time on the beds until we found the one that felt just right.

the 90-day return policy was important to us, given the cost of the bed, just in case we don’t like it for some reason.

We have the cheapy…it’s a “regular” mattress thickness…our old sheets still fit…and we did NOT have a pillow top mattress. I believe our has 2 inches of memory foam. Some of the more “deluxe” models have 3 inches, maybe more.

We have only a double bed. We got ours at Better Bedding seven years ago…got the mattress AND the foundation which is really like a platform (about the same thickness as our old box spring…since we wanted to use our old bed frame…this was a must as was the depth of the mattress). Seven years ago, it cost us $1200.

I have the more basic non-ridiculously-thick model of the Tempurpedic as well, they didn’t used to have all the more expensive models they have now, and it still works fine. We’ve never flipped it and there are no low spots to worry about.

Plan to let it air out for a day before using it and there shouldn’t be much of a smell or out-gassing issue.

It definitely works better than the Novoform (or something like that) from Costco which can develop low spots, etc.

Do any of you who love the memory foam mattresses live where it’s hot much of the year? We can’t afford to keep the AC set much below 76 at night and DH is too hot at that - I worry that he would be far too “deep” into the mattress and well insulated on a foam one.

Re: my post #98…I have the thin Temperpedic…I thought I put that in the post…but I guess I didn’t!! I think I probably have the same one as UCSD UCLA Dad…he’s right…there used to be only one option!!

When we bought ours, we had the criteria that our old linens needed to fit, AND we wanted it to fit on our bed frame/headboard/footboard. Those THICKER mattresses are just to thick for us.
